“Got that right. Some days it, uh … it seems like that world’s lifetimes away, and––and maybe it is, you know, maybe … maybe we’re all so goddamn worried we’ll lose those memories that we forget how the world is now. This time last year, I was––shit, think, uh, think I was a dead man. Yeah. Whole goddamn world thought I went out in a blaze of glory except Karen ‘n one or two others. Anyway, you got yourself a deal, kid. Just don’t wanna hear you cryin’ into your pillow at night ‘cause I wiped the floor with your ass.” Most folks around here do that. Err on the side of caution, because he puts them off or intimidates them, or both. It’s the Kevlar, he thinks. The spray-painted white skull, splashed in arterial red now, is the first thing they see coming, and that sets the groundwork for everything after. “… psychopath. Jesus Christ. Yeah, you got my word. I won’t say shit about it. What happened t’ the asshole, anyway? Daryl’s brother. Meat sack take a bite out of him?”
“... i remember that, i think. uh — some big explosion or something, right? i saw the headlines, but who didn’t. my mom, she — we lived in detroit for a while, before atlanta, and she was always saying how the city could’ve used somebody like you. my dad wasn’t too crazy about the idea.” he pauses, cracks a grin. “keep dreaming. it’s too bad they can’t put that in the headlines anymore — pizza guy beats the punisher at mario kart.”
“merle — ? it’s a long story. rick cuffed him to a rooftop in atlanta and he cut off his own hand to get loose. when we went back for him, he wasn’t there. i don’t know if he’s dead, or a walker, or what, but — bad as it sounds, if we never see him again it’ll be too soon. we’re better off.”
killrusso.
“Yeah, not to brag, my ass––you know what you’re doin’, kid. Those were the days, huh? You, uh … come home ‘n sit your ass in front of that TV, turn that shit on ‘n lose yourself in it. Everything else, all that bullshit in your life, it just disappears to a couple thousand pixels on a goddamn screen. I’ll tell you one thing though, you ain’t the only Mario Kart king in this chicken coop.” It’s easy to lapse into this. Not comfort, exactly, but something close to it –– a sense of ease, maybe, even as the topic of conversation shifts. “Guess not. Figure you already know there’s, uh … always two sides to every story, you know, shit that––shit they won’t put on the news. Wouldn’t have mattered either way. What I did, it wasn’t a question, you know, I never had to think about it, but I never hurt anybody that didn’t deserve it.”
“— yeah, no kidding. it’s weird to think about now, you know? like, how this time last year i was worried about ... getting through that next part of portal, or finals or whatever. i mean, i know it’s only been a few months, but — i don’t know. feels longer, i guess. but hey, if you ever find a working nintendo and enough juice to power it, i’m your guy. it’s been a while since i got to kick somebody’s ass at something.” oddly enough, he doesn’t balk at the shift; the wariness he’d held onto, that urge to err on the side of caution, is steadily slipping away. more oddly, it’s starting to feel misplaced. “that’s — no, i believe you. i kinda thought the whole ‘psychopath’ thing was a tough sell, anyway. we had a guy, uh ... daryl’s brother, actually. he’s gone now. but he was one of those people who — you know, for as bad as he was, he was probably worse before all this. that’s one loss i’m not exactly torn up about. just don’t tell daryl i said that.”
‘ let me be. ’ / rick.
meme / @honestsurvival.
by nature, he’s compassionate to a fault. someone else might have walked away; might have listened, and stayed quiet, and turned around to leave the way they’d come. but that’s not glenn. instead, he moves to stand beside rick at the fence line adjacent to the greene’s front porch. the spill of light from a few dozen yards away spreads just far enough, but what he can see is mostly silhouette. he doesn’t need more than that. he can see the defeated slump of rick’s shoulders and the way he grips the fence post with knuckles that are bleached almost white.
“… look,” he starts, but quietly. “i get it, okay? i get why you think it’s easier to be left alone, because you think everybody’s gonna look at you like you screwed up, or — or let us down, or whatever’s running through your head right now. and, no offense, but it’s crap. it’s not easier, and you know it. you don’t have to shut us out, rick, not after everything we’ve been through. we’re like family — i mean, you know that, right?”
when rick doesn’t say anything, he presses on. gently, because he isn’t abrasive, isn’t harsh or sharp - edged the way someone like shane might be; but firmly, too.
“you didn’t let us down. we’re all just doing the best we can, here — you can’t expect anything more than that, especially not when you’re alone. you need us. and ... and we need you, too. if we’re gonna get through this, it has to be together. so, just — come back, okay? come back and we’ll figure it out. we always do. glass half full, remember?”
killrusso.
“Well, ain’t my place to say it, but you’re probably right. Kept you all alive a hell of a lot longer than you would’ve been without him,” which isn’t to say they weren’t capable, weren’t adaptable –– more that they had the advantage of having someone there to make the hard calls. “Yeah, I wasn’t much of a, uh––video game kinda guy. Played a little Nintendo back in the day, you know, some, uh, some Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros, ‘n that about sums up my experience. … overheard, huh? That what we call watching the news, or are you some kinda spook?”
there’s a little bit of a nod, more acknowledgement than anything else. shane’s mindset is a survivor’s; it’s the methods that tend to put people off. glenn shot when the barn opened, too.
“— wait, really? nice. my sisters had me beat at super smash bros, but i was kind of a legend at mario kart. i could do bowser’s castle in like a minute and twenty — and that was on a bad day. you know, not to brag or anything.” his smile slips momentarily into something like chagrin. he’s never been any good at lying. “i ... i might’ve watched the news once or twice, yeah. you were sort of a household name. but that’s not — i’m not judging. everybody has their opinions. in the grand scheme of things, i guess it doesn’t really matter anymore.”
killrusso.
“Shane’s a good man. Knows what he’s talking about –– and now I’m that asshole that’s tellin’ you shit you already know, huh? Yeah. Bet you, uh … you like t’ stay Switzerland on that, keep the peace.” He exhales, something close to a laugh but not quite reaching its mark. “Oh, yeah. Yeah, my mom, you know, she, uh––she was in labor for a good eighteen hours before I finally showed the world this ugly mug, came out with a loaded Glock in one hand ‘n a Beretta in the other. Shit, kid, tell you the truth, I didn’t touch a piece ‘till I was eighteen. Probably looked just about as goddamn stupid as you can imagine first time I picked it up.”
“i like to keep the peace, period, but he’s — yeah, he’s a good guy. he’s done a lot for us, since day one. i just think people forget that sometimes.” and he almost grins, because the concept’s way too easy to believe; that, and he wasn’t expecting ‘funny.’ “hey, at least you had a head start. i played video games, which ... honestly, it doesn’t even count. an xbox controller isn’t exactly on par with a glock. but you were in the military, right — ? i, um. thought i overheard something about that.”
canon! thanks!
killrusso.
“Smart man. Heard you, uh––delivered pizzas. Yeah. They teach you gun handling in training or did you pick that up after the world went to shit?”
“— after. i never even saw one up close before. shane taught a few of us, and, uh — dale, he showed me how to use the rifle. i’m guessing you never had that problem.”
killrusso.
“–– know what you’re doin’ with that thing?” @honestmorality
“uh ... mostly, yeah. but i don’t really use guns if i can avoid them — guns make noise, and noise attracts geeks.”
‘ look at that sun. ’ / honestnature
meme / @honestnature.
"— yeah, it’s hard to miss. anyway, aren’t you supposed to, like … not look directly at the sun? my mom always flipped out about that.”
he’s been half - buried under the hood of the winnebago for an hour or so, flathead in hand, jenna leaning against the vehicle somewhere to his left. the hottest part of the afternoon is behind them, finally; he doesn’t know if he’ll ever get used to that, not really. moving from michigan to georgia was enough of a culture shock when it was just cities — rural georgia is something else entirely.
she nudges him, tugs at the sleeve of his t - shirt. “no — look.”
“what?” he ducks out from under, pushing back his cap to mop at the sweat on his forehead, and it takes him a second to realize what she’s talking about. not the sun: the sunset. fiery orange that blends to a gentler wash of peach and pale purple, spreading across the wide open sky above hershel’s fields. there’s a bit of a breeze, a steady hum of cicadas, a distant chorus of birds. it’s oddly humbling, somehow, and all he says for a minute is a quiet ‘oh’ of acknowledgement.
then, “… yeah. yeah, i see it.” her face is tipped up a little, like she’s drinking it in. like it’s all a reminder that not everything in the world is bloody and dead and rotting. that’s humbling, too. “it’s beautiful.”
‘ alright, play it tough if you want. ’
meme / @killrusso.
“oh — no, i wasn’t — i’m not. uh, playing it tough, i mean. not that i’m not tough, i just —” yeah, he’s off to a flying start, right out of the gate and straight into a wall. a wall who has the kind of stare that’s intimidating on principle, even without all those news stories. he clears his throat, starts again. “i just meant it’s — uh, it’s kinda been my thing, you know, i’m the … going to town guy. it’s just easier, getting in and out when i’m by myself. the, um — one of the first times i had to bring people, we ended up trapped in a department store, so … that was awesome. look, back up’s great in theory, but it’s a lot harder to stay hidden when you’re in a group. especially a big group. i can handle it, is all i’m trying to say. trust me, it’s — not my first rodeo.”
