Tips for talking to disabled people about their disability

1. Respect how much they want to share. Some people will be willing to get into it with you, some won’t. Their health really isn’t your business, so they get to decide how much they want to talk about with you.

2. Don’t ask ‘why’ questions. Most ‘why’ questions come off as rude - ‘why don’t you work?’ ‘why do you do/use X?’ and can be rephrased in a better way (‘what does X do to help you?’) or not asked at all. 

3. Don’t make suggestions. Not only do we know what’s best for our bodies, but we’ve heard all possible suggestions already. So unless you’re really close with the person and know they might want them, don’t suggest diets, exercises, medications, or other behavior changes. The only suggestions I’ve found helpful are ideas for activities to keep me busy when I’m not feeling well.

4. Assume normalcy. Disabled people are people, not aliens. Talk to them like you would anyone else, unless they ask you to do otherwise (slow down, etc.). Don’t ask them stupid questions about basic life behaviors (‘how do you go to the bathroom?’). They live their lives just like everyone else, with some slight differences.

5. Don’t compare their life to yours, or anyone else’s. I can’t tell you how much we hate hearing “I wish I could stay home all day,” and similar phrases. News flash: we wish we didn’t have to stay home all day, and it’s offensive to assume that it’s the same kind of break for us that it is for you. Also, it’s not necessarily a great idea to bring up some other person that you know with a disability (my aunt has X, etc.) unless it’s relevant to the conversation. Not all disabled people are the same, so you shouldn’t assume we automatically have something in common with your friend/relative.

I hope this list helps some people understand a few courtesy ‘rules’ about talking to disabled people! I know that conversations can be frustrating when the abled person doesn’t really know these things, so I figured a little educational post would be a good way to spread awareness :)
