summary: there's no point in james and remus making a bet over who gets their girl first. not when their girls are only interested in each other

âFive galleons,â Starts James, cracking open another pistachio and popping it into his mouth. Remus glances at him from the corner of his eye with an inquisitive hum, digging through the bowl of nut mix between them for some roasted almonds as he continues chewing on his last bite. âI get a date with Lily before you get your date.â
Remus scoffs, moving his gaze towards the corner of the common room where you sit with Lily, knees touching as you speak quietly between you. He shakes his head, smiling softly. âNo way mate, Iâm not betting on my love life with you.â
âYeah, because you know Iâll win.â
The amused sound Remus lets out barely hides his insecurity. He knows James is right. After all, heâs barely been able to have a conversation with you without stuttering, meanwhile James is laying all of his charms down on Lily. âWell, maybe the fact that you havenât scored a date with her yet says enough. She might not be into you at all.â James doesnât give his friend a response, but he snatches the almond from Remusâs hand just as he makes way to toss it into his mouth. âHey!â He cries, head snapping to the side just in time to watch James eat the almond, his jaw moving with exaggerated movements. Remusâs mouth dips low in betrayal at the knowledge that James doesnât even like almonds.
âYouâll seeâŠâ James grumbles auspiciously, but Remus only laughs, watching as Sirius and Peter argue over their game of chess. âShouldnât we have our priorities straight like them?â Remus asks, gesturing towards them. He sighs, thinking about the fun his friends are having while he and James stress over their love lives â something that has brought more sorrow than good in the past. âI have my priorities straight!â James snaps, as though Remus has just said something ridiculous. âIâm prioritising finding my future wife! No, Iâm prioritising securing my future wife. Itâs Evans, Iâm telling you.â
Remus huffs in amusement, shrugging his shoulders loosely. âYeah, alright, if youâre so sure.â However, Remusâs careless nature is quick to crumble away. James elbows him in the side, averting his attention to where youâre walking towards them both. Remus straightens up in his seat, clearing his throat lightly when you stop right in front of them. âWhat time do you guys predict the party will actually start tonight?â You ask, swaying back and forth on the balls of your feet. âPast the awkward stage and into the actual party?â
Both boys turn to stare right at each other, both spluttering quietly. It gives you a chance to go on. âLily and I have plans now and weâre not sure how much time weâll have to get ready when weâre back. You guys wonât mind us being a little late, right?â Their heads snap back towards you in comedic fashion, both of them scrambling to find their words. âTake your timeâ Finally says James, joined by Remusâs mock nonchalant âYeah, pop by whenever.â
Squinting your eyes at the two close friends, you ask âSo⊠A time?â For a long moment, theyâre both silent again, until James finally shrugs, mumbling âAround eleven?â You nod, noting as both James and Remusâs eyes move to your right hand side. You follow their line of sight, smiling at the sight of Lily. She holds up your wallet, handing it to you before letting her newly free hand slip to your waist.
âYou got your things?â Lily nods at your question, pressing her hand into the dip of your back to guide you away from the two boys. James barely processes the redheadâs presence before sheâs gone. A synchronised sigh leaves both boysâ lips as they fall back into the couch cushions, watching as you walk away from them. âImagine if we both marry them. Best friends married to best friends - our children will be closer than anyone in the whole world.â James isnât met with any response other than âI wonder what sheâll wear to the party.â
âMhm, I wonder what Lily will wear to the party.â
âHey, if we both get with them, and she tells Lily about my skills in bed, youâll have to tell me so I can do better, yeah?â
âMate, how would I even know?â
âLily would tell you - keep up man.â
The two of them stare away into the distance, dissociating from the common room around them. Each of them think about the woman they respectably seek. Remus tips his head back to lean on the couch, shutting his eyes softly as he imagines you in that denim skirt heâs seen you wear, and perhaps a nice form fitting top. Next to him, James smiles into the open space, picturing Lily in a nice dress - maybe something red. Theyâre left there to wonder for a long while, letting the clocks tick by.
Eventually, Sirius and Peter stand up and they mindlessly follow them up to the dorm. They get ready for their own party in an odd silence, listening as their dorm mates chat along about the nightâs plans. Or particularly, their plans for tonightâs aftermath. Despite looking around for you, neither James or Remus notice when you and Lily slip back into the common room, then back up your dorm to get ready. They miss the way Lily is clutching your hips, laughing delightfully as you playfully scold her for something. No, you only catch their eyes when the party is in full swing and you make your way from the girlsâ staircase together â a sort of grand entrance. Remus hits Jamesâs biceps until the manâs attention is on him, spinning around so fast that his beer nearly spills over. âLetâs go say hi.â Remus pleads, as though he isnât already a good friend of yours. James clears his throat and fluffs up his hair before nodding, letting Remus lead him towards you both.
They come to a stop in front of you and Lily, but before James can even start conversation with a smart comment, he spots the dark hickey decorating your neck. He falters, blinking quickly and looking aside to Remus, who still hasnât noticed anything. âYou guys okay?â Lily laughs, looking between James and Remus, who nod unanimously. Though Remus hasnât even noticed your hickey, he doesnât get the opportunity to begin flirting, because someone slings an arm over his and Jamesâs shoulders, leaning all their weight on them. Sirius laughs, looking between all four of his friends while he begins rambling on about the dark skinned goddess he just saw across the room.
Suddenly, Sirius pauses, staring straight at you. He smirks widely, leaning back as best he can, then marvels aloud âHey, nice going. Whoâs giving you secret love bites over here?â Remusâs eyes go wide at Siriusâs words, attention finally drawn towards your neck. He swallows thickly at the recognition that, indeed, you do have a hickey on your neck, and that James has already won the bet they havenât even made. The way you laugh at Siriusâs question has the three boys looking back at you quizzically. At their blank expressions you turn to look at Lily with an exasperated look in your eyes, and it finally dawns on you that they donât know.
They have no idea.
âLily must know,â Begins James, securing a hand behind Siriusâs back. âThey had plans together so sheâll know who else was there.â Lily rolls her eyes, hooking her arm around your waist and tugging you away from them. âAlright, letâs get a drink.â She announces, quickening her pace so you both get away from them. âTheyâre idiots.â She adds, this time quietly, only for you to hear. She pours you a drink, offering you a kiss when you take it from her. You feel her lips morph into a smile when they meld onto yours, and you snake a hand down into hers, intertwining your fingers together.
âLetâs dance.â Your girlfriend suggests with a smile, giggling when you sling your arms over her shoulders, bringing her closer to you. âLetâs dance.â You repeat, though your intentions are completely different, even as you begin swaying your hips along to the music. Angling your face upwards, you catch Lilyâs lips in a kiss, smiling when her free arm wraps around your waist, hand dipping dangerously low on your back. Lily suddenly wishes she hadnât poured herself a drink because she canât touch you the way she wants to, and you just look so delicious in that dress you decided to wear. She nudges her tongue against your lips, moaning softly when you let her properly kiss you.
âOh, theyâre having a laugh.â Remus exclaims across the room, glancing towards James, whose jaw has gone slack. âUh, I donât think they are, mate.â Their shoulders slump in disappointment, but neither of them can stop staring at you in the gap between all the bodies on the dance floor.
