Max felt the nudge at his thigh and forced himself not to react suddenly. He was trying to take things slow. Live life moment to moment. Not everyone was out to kill him. Not everyone was trying to use him as their own personal weapon of mass destruction. However, he still took a moment to analyze what it was he’d felt. The tip of someone’s shoe. Boot maybe? Thin toed, so either a woman or a man in really nice shoes.
He knew the voice that came after it, though. He’d know that voice anywhere. He pushed himself out from under the car, the dolly bumping just a bit. He had a wrench in his hand. He looked up at her with a grin.
“You mean a friend didn’t give you my card? If I hadn’t fixed your car myself, why I’d say you were lying about that, too.” He sat up, grabbing a cloth. He began wiping off his hand.
– she notes as he freezes up for a moment, though he seems to relax as she starts to speak. sometimes she forgets that he’s not ... well, not ordinary. not like her. that he was, in fact, a hero’s kid. people like him, and lila and cooper too, they weren’t exactly on her level of not caring. they had things, people, to worry about. people who might try to kill them, nobody was trying to kill rii; no any more, at least. vince was always a lingering problem, but he hadn’t bothered her lately, he probably didn’t even know that she’d left town for a while.
she takes a small step back to give him room to wheel out. she just flashed a small smile in return, hands tucking into the pockets of her jacket.
there was a burst of laughter. ❛ hun, you know i don’t have any friends. ❜ ‘didn’t’ is the better word, but ‘don’t’ was already out of her mouth before she could fix it. ❛ just lucky it was actually my car that time, had a few other not-so-legally-acquired ones that could’a used a tune up. ❜
