IF Oikawa had gone to Shiratorizawa(good thing he didn’t he only belongs to Aoba Johsai): How the other major teams would have been affected.

Karasuno - Kageyama could have potentially went to Aoba Johsai or potentially went to Karasuno. It would depend how competent Shigeru Yahaba(that backup setter that was in the Aoba Johsai/Karasuno pratice match) was. It would also depend on how badly Aoba Johsai would want a “genius setter”. So…

IF Kageyama landed at Aoba Johsai: Sugawara would continue to be the setter. Hinata, without his freak quick, would have more competition for his position(namely Yamaguchi) and no longer be as impressive as he is with Kageyama. His only goal would be to beat Aoba Johsai(Kageyama). Over the course of the series, Karasuno would not experience as much growth as it does now. 

IF Kageyama went to Karasuno: The internal development and evolution for the crow squad would remain mostly the same, but Aoba Johsai would be a significantly less important team and only serve to remind Kageyama of his past, not as something to motivate Karasuno to improve/evolve.

Aoba Johsai - Aoba Johsai’s personnel would remain mostly unchanged, though they would be considerably less scary when not lead by Oikawa. There are also two scenarios for Aoba Johsai.

IF Kageyama landed at Aoba Johsai: Kageyama would either remain on the bench or get benched eventually. There would be no chemistry between him and the team, especially his old teammates after what happened his last year in junior high. He would probably remain stuck in his selfish ways and be unsuccessful.

IF Kageyama went to Karasuno:  Shigeru Yahaba would be the setter, and probably a much more major character. However, Aoba Johsai would become fairly insignificant, even with their ace Iwaizumi, because Karasuno with Kageyama is stronger than Aoba Johsai without Oikawa(They beat Aoba Johsai without a full team against Yahaba early in the series). 

Shiratorizawa -  Shiratorizawa would become the ultimate team, due to the Oikawa/Ushiwaka combo. Ushijima, who is already scarily good, would only become better due to Oikawa’s skill and Shiratorizawa would probably become similar to Rakuzan(KnB). The only team that can possibly surpass them is Karasuno, if Kageyama and Hinata can evolve enough.

Nekoma, Fukurodani, and the other Tokyo teams are mostly unaffected seeing as they are in a different prefecture.

Bungou Stray Dogs  Dazai Osamu/Oba Yozo References

Remember this is not about facts in the manga. These are simply my own theories and assumptions.

Dazai is probably one of the most interesting and mysterious characters among the Armed Detective Agency. To understand more about his intentions and motivations I decided to read a bit about RL Dazais biography and his work „Ningen Shikkaku“ or „No Longer Human“ since I do believe Kafka (BSD creator) doesn’t only use M!Dazais suicidal behaviour as a reference to his RL counterpart but also his  traits and feelings and his overall relationships with others. Great Book btw. The first thing that can be noticed is that Ningen Shikkaku was so heavily influenced by Dazais own life experiences to the point that it can be called a semi-biography. I don’t want to spoiler much here about Ningen Shikakku. It’s a great story but also very painful.

So I wanted to talk about similiarities  of M!Dazai, RL!Dazai and Ōba Yōzo, the main protagonist of Ningen Shikkaku. The focus lies especially on Oba here rather than RL!Dazai.

1. The Mask

In Ningen Shikkaku we have the young Oba Yozo, who appears as a funny, comical and foolish person in a very exaggerated way. From the beginning it is made clear that this is only a facade by Oba who tries to be the funny guy. It is just a mask to hide his real self, the monster as he calls himself like that. 

At the same time we have Dazai in the BSD manga who shows also an exaggerated foolishness among others, especially Kunikida and Atsushi. I do think that Kafka did this on purpose as Dazai is cearly hiding something even with his olf friends like Ango. So maybe  M!Dazai ist the one hiding himself by using the foolishness to trick others. Oba said his beahviour has been like this since his childhood. Meanwhile we haven’t seen much of younger Dazai in the manga yet.

2. The inability to emphasize

The monster, that lies within Oba Yozo, is his real self, that isn’t able to empathizes with others.  Oba mentioned in the book, as long as they can laugh, even if they make fun of him, he will be at least useful. This way he might be able to empathize with others. To feel how it is to be more human and not a monster.

Now, for M!Dazai I don’t want to make him look cruel but to understand where I am getting from i will spoil the 2nd Light Novel „Dazai Osamu and the Dark Era“, that covers the story around Dazais leave from the mafia, a littl bit (but nothing crucial). So i won’t go into deep in this so i just talking about the important things.

In the Light Novel Dazai was good friends with Sakaguchi Ango and Oda Sakunosuke or Odasaku(guy in the pic), how he was called. This Odasaku was also a Port Mafia member, but unlike many other Mafia members, he had a codex, that said he should never ever kill someone. Quite ironic that he is in this organisation. This guy is the one who tells Dazai to leave the Port Mafia. And his reasonings? It weren’t earnest reasons like “You aren’t a bad person, who should kill“ or “The mafia doesn’t do you well“ he literally told him

“You don’t CARE if you KILL or SAVE people, so go to the side that saves“ (note: we don’t know if that ist he only reason he left, probably not)

So he basically doesn’t care for others. It’s even shown in the manga that he would hurt his own “friends“ like getting Ango severely injured to force a deal outta him, just fort he sake of getting close to his goals. When he is confronted by it he doesn’t show any sign of being shameful about it.

He literally doesn’t feel something like compassion or sympathy für others. Which gets back to my standpoint, that says he doesn’t feel empathy for others. Don’t get me wrong i do believe he is able to understand other humans feelings and how they will react to certain things. He has shown that ability in the manga already. But he isn’t  moved by others emotions or actions sincerely nor does he feel sorrow for others. At least not so far. This explains his loneliness, as he himself admits it in the Light Novel when Odasaku tells him that.

3. My expectations

So Kafka is using definitely more than Dazais suicide gimmick as a reference to Oba Yozo from the book Ningen Shikkaku, or RL!Dazai, to word it better. From the little character defining moments we got from Dazai in the manga so far, we see that Kafka is using the most significant  character traits of Oba Yozo for Dazai. So i do think my assumptions about the reasonings for his character traits (the mask that hides his real self) might not be too far-fetched. And i hope to see more of these references, especialy since Dazai is one of the most interesting authors in this series. It would be nice to see more focus on his real character in the future and all the circumstance that made him the way he is now.

 Another thing, I don’t want to badmouth Dazai with this text. In fact, he is my fave character as i see the most potential in his back story of the manga as a great fleshed-out character. He is also the one character that represents the not-black-and-white atmosphere of the manga, that makes the manga feel more realistic even with all supernatural abilities, the best. He is in fact the shadiest in the series along with Mori as his real intentions and motivations are really unclear. On the contrary even characters like Akutagawa or Higuchi seem like people  you could identify with more easily.

I also hope the whole suicide thing isn’t ONLY used as comedy relief in the future. I mean, this would make him seem like a more realistic person as well.

The Little Details in Bungou Stray Dogs (Episode 3)

I’m writing this post in case others do not know (yet) about the little references in Bungou Stray Dogs and I would like to give my two cents as of episode 3.

So yes, in case you are not aware, all the characters in this series is named of a real-life authors. And his abilities are named after their famous works. Now, you can absolutely enjoy Bungou Stray Dogs even if you’re not familiar with these authors, most of which are from Japanese literature. But in order to really appreciate and enjoy the series, you have to know your literature because of the little details. Let me show you, based on episode 3.

Junichiro Tanizaki is dubbed as one of the most famous Japanese writers, next to Natsume Soseki. In the series, the character, Junichiro Tanizaki has a “sister” called Naomi. And Tanizaki (the author) has a book called Naomi and the main character is called…Naomi. It’s about a 28-year-old man named Joji who took a 15-year-old girl as his wife. Basically, a Japanese version of Lolita. So in the series, we see why the younger sister is called Naomi. (Tanizaki is also known for his other kinky books like The Key and such). Now, we also see a brother complex in the series Naomi. This is because the book Naomi is inspired by Tanizaki’s sister-in-law, after he saw her dancing. One that’s one little detail.

And here, we have Osamu Dazai. I’m really loving all these Dazai references because he is my favorite Japanese author. Okay, even in episode 1, there has been SO much little details of the character Dazai in reference to the author Dazai. Osamu Dazai, the author (that is actually his pen name) is known from his many suicide attempts, hence, why the character Dazai is a suicide freak. I point out this scene because we see character Dazai asking the waitress to strangle him. Real Dazai also had a relationship with a waitress and even committed suicide (not through strangulation though, either through drowning or overdose). He had like 5 unsuccessful suicide attempts, including 3 love suicides until finally successfully killing himself (with a lover) by drowning, hence, his first appearance in episode 1 where he was in the river.

Ryunosuke Akutagawa is known as the “Father of Japanese Short Story.” His ability, In a Grove is a short short (which Rashomon is taken from) that has become more famous after it has been made into a film by critically acclaimed director, Akira Kurosawa which has been considered as one of the greatest films ever made.

Now, character Akutagawa is seen coughing multiple times in episode 3. Real life Akutagawa’s physical and mental health (he had visual hallucinations) both suffered and it worsened as he got older. Like Dazai (and many other Japanese authors/writers), his first suicide attempt was unsuccessful but eventually died by suicide, from an overdose.

Ichiyo Higuchi (a pen name) is one of the most important Japanese woman writers. Here, character Higuchi calls Akutagawa “senpai”, real life Higuchi fell in love with her mentor, whom has a reputation for being a womanizer. He did not return her love and treated her like a younger sister instead. This theme continued to be evident in her works.

I’m sure there would have been many other details but these are the ones I only got hold of or are the authors that I’m quite familiar with. Nevertheless, I just wanted to provide some context to others who might not know it and hopefully, it’ll make them interested to check out these author’s works as well.

Sugawara: Honestly, with out question?

Asahi: Why wouldn't we? You guys are our friend's firstly and than teammates or rivals.

Kenma: Exactly, just like the racy photo's of Oikawa and Iwaizumi making out, we won't judge you guys.

Oikawa: I liked you better when you were quiet.

Sugawara: So no one questioned it, because you all thought it was a thing already. And you never judged us?

Everyone except Daichi: Yep.

Daichi: This turned out sweeter than I thought it would.
