I'm really bad at small talk with people I'm not familiar with, like stupidly bad. Shirts with Lord of the Rings, Cthulhu, Bioshock, whatever effectively help me to find people with similar interests without awkwardly asking them. I'm not saying it happens a lot or something, but occasionally it does. And somehow that gives me comfort.

Heck, I once saw a girl with a Dark Souls shirt and if I wasn't there with other people I would have probably tried talking to her, maybe.
