synopsis: a show called the pink opaque distorts owen's reality

intro

holy shit. i have never cried so hard after watching a film oh my GOD anyway today's film is i saw the tv glow, written and directed in 2024 by jane schoenbrun! the film acts as the second installment of schoenbrun's screen trilogy, following we're all going to the world's fair (2021 movie) and preceding the upcoming novel public access afterworld

plot

in 1996, maddy introduces owen to a show titled the pink opaque, which follows isabel and tara as they battle mr meloncholy using psychic powers. maddy describes the show as feeling more real than real life, and talks about wanting to leave her hometown. she later disappears. after 8 years, maddy reappears and tells owen that she's been trapped in the pink opaque. maddy tries convincing owen to join her in going back to the show, which he refuses. he then continues with his life, until the end of the film where he looks inside himself and sees the "glow" that he's spent the entire film suppressing.

trans identity and its relevance

the main interpretation of this film is that it's all an allegory for being trans. schoenbrun has compared the film to the "egg crack" moment trans people go through when they realise they weren't born in the right body. they've also compared owen's decisions in the film to their own fear of the idea of never accepting that they're trans, never coming out and never living their life how they want to. owen and maddy are often seen as representations of the two possibilities a trans person can choose from. maddy represents what happens when a trans person accepts themselves and chooses to transition. she escapes the town that she knew would end her and nbody who ever even thought about trying to stop her never heard from her again. owen, however, represents the possibility of someone never accepting their trans identity, and spending their life suppressing that and posing to the rest of the world as a cis person. he lives his life unfulfilled and never quite happy enough, until he breaks at the end of the film. the scene of him looking inside himself at what is portrayed as such an old age ties in with one of the key messages of the film: there is still time. there's still time for your real identity to push its way through you. there's still time for you to gather the courage to carve yourself open and force yourself to face what you've always been too scared to even imagine.

a trip to the moon (1902)

synopsis: a group of scientists build a rocket to travel to the moon

my personal rating: 8/10

intro

hellooo i've decided to start watching films more often and write a little bit about each film i watch! today's film is a trip to the moon, directed by georges méliès in 1902. the film was inspired by the 1865 novel from the earth to the moon and its 1870 sequel around the moon, both written by jules verne.

plot

according to wikipedia, the lead scientist in this film is called barbenfouillis, and the scientists that accompany him on his trip are called nostradamus, alcofrisbas, omega, micromegas and parafaragaramus. the film opens with barbenfouillis suggesting an expedition to the moon to the astronomy club. only the other four scientists (i can't be bothered to type their names out again lolll) agree to join him, and they build a bullet shaped rocket and set off for the moon., where they meet the selenites, one of which later goes back to earth with the scientists by accident.

the selenites

the selenites are the aliens that inhabit the moon in this film. they get their name from selene, one of the greek goddesses of the moon. wikipedia describes them as "insectoid", but i think if they can be compared to any kind of animal, they're more birdlike. they can be very easily killed, as they explode when hit with the right amount of force. their society runs based on a monarchy, which is shown when they kidnap the scientists and take them to the selenite king.

ughhh this film is so cool i love it

even though it's really bad quality by today's standards, it's so iconic in the sense that it's the film that brought science fiction to cinema in the first place

random fun fact i like about this film: georges méliès (the director of this film) played both professor barbenfouillis and the moon! as well as being a director, he was also an actor, and took up roles in 300/520 of the films he directed! he said that "the greatest difficulty in realising my own ideas forced me to sometimes play the leading role in my films". his involvement in every area of his productions is why he's often regarded as one of the first auteurs in film (an auteur is any creative who has a distinct style when it comes to their work)
