this is my own most wonderful horsie named Ducky she was once the mighty steed i used to event and show on and now she is living out a comfortable retirement being very silly and eating peppermints. best feature of Ducky is how she loves to try and groom you and will rub her lips and face all over you to let you know you are a part of her herd
Horses are easy to draw and their anatomy makes perfect sense
I think it’s really cute to see cows by the side of the road when driving, but it also makes me sad to think they might be eaten. How can you tell dairy cows from beef cows? Is there a difference? Is there any other reason to raise cows besides food?
i could spend some time teaching you guys about different beef and dairy breeds, but i think the underlying concern here is about beef farming if im correct! if im not, let me know and i can write up a post about beef and dairy breeds, because i do love talking about them too hehe.
its completely normal and human to be upset at the thought of an animal dying, death is an ugly thing to a lot of people you know? i think its in our nature not to want animals to suffer. but its important to realize that everywhere in the world animals are there to be eaten by other animals. the ecosystem, the cycle of life, whatever you wanna call it.
in the wild, bovines are mostly picked off by predators when they're young and unable to defend themselves! an animal can be killed and eaten at any point, and if they get sick or injured thats often fatal for them. in captivity, cattle and other bovines get to live to adulthood happy and healthy and surrounded by friends! they get free food n water, free medical care, and they get to sit in a big field with all their buddies. we care for them and love them for their entire lives, and at our hands they die quickly and painlessly. and then we eat them. its a symbiotic relationship.
to an outsider the industry can seem 2 to be all death bc thats the only part we know about. but its so much more than that! farmers dedicate their whole lives to their animals. they raise them, feed them, tend them when theyre sick, give them space to run around, make sure theyre not too hot or cold and that their water troughs are clean... for whole lifetimes! over and over and over, farming is about life. we feed them and they feed us. its beautiful. genuinely.

ahhh i try really hard to keep this blog as a positive space but this is a really really important thing to me that i feel really strongly about, and i think id be silly if i didnt at least try to warn people, so here goes!!
cattle are not dogs! please do not keep them as house pets!
cattle have very specific needs and if you're not knowledgeable about those needs and not equipped to raise cattle, please do not keep them. i understand that "micro minis" look cute, i completely understand seeing one and wanting one as a house pet if you're not super knowledgeable about them but i really have to warn you guys that cattle can not be happy and healthy under those conditions!
im going to pass it over to my good friend @horse-reviews for the writeup because im not very good at expressing myself when im frustrated and also he is literally an agriculture science guy so watch this space!

Mini breeds are sometimes used in agriculture due to being efficient producers of meat and milk on small lots of land, or in places where available fodder isn't very rich - see the Australian Lowline or the Dexter which are production animals and not pets. These are usually about a metre (3') tall at the shoulder and weigh at least a couple hundred kilos, so they're big animals despite being small cows. Cows smaller than this (like a micro mini) usually have some form of dwarfism like achondroplasia which humans also get, and which can cause health problems.
But even in a perfect world where cows could be infinitely tiny without health problems, I would still strongly be against keeping a cow as a house pet for multiple reasons:
Cows have different social needs from cats or dogs because they're herd herbivores. To feel safe and complete, they need to be with other herd herbivores - cows preferably but they can get along with sheep, horses, goats, and others. Cows can be great friends with humans but humans can't be their world.
The ruminant feeding cycle isn't suited for being a house pet. Cows typically graze continuously at dawn and dusk and nibble throughout the day, finding cozy spots in the sun to ruminate between bouts of feeding. This is awkward to set up in a household environment because it requires a lot of space and sun.
Cows (and other herbivores) don't understand bowel control like cats and dogs do. They will urinate and defecate wherever and don't understand why you would try to stop them.
Because of their complex social needs, they can develop serious behavioural issues if reared away from other calves, but if you rear them with other calves and then isolate them in a house, you're also heading towards trouble. There's no right time to take cows away from herd living.
Pets like dogs and cats enjoy being in a house and having human friends, and they benefit a lot from this. For a cow, you're just compromising their needs (open space, cowie friends, lots of grass and other fodder available) to suit your own pleasure. This is a terrible way to think about your pets, and having a housepet should be just as fun for them as it is for you.
For all of these reasons I'm strongly opposed to keeping any cow alone and especially alone inside a house. They're not dogs and they're just not made for it! Love your cows how they are and not because of how much they could be like something else.

though i do love and miss aurochs a lot, i think its more important to focus on the conservation of the species we have on earth right now! we dont really have a niche in the ecosystem that Only Aurochs Can Fill yk? at best we r diverting resources tht could be used to help the native wildlife and at worst bringing these big dangerous creatures back could disrupt stuff even more...
i do love aurochs! but theyre not here right now . and a lot of different struggling species that fill the same niche are. you know? i think we should help them with the technology we r using to breed towards aurochs... it just seems a bit silly to me.
thought i'd add a bit more context here as someone with a background in genetics! the goal of this project is to take a variety of cattle breeds with genes similar to what we know of the aurochs and combine them to create an aurochs-like animal for the purpose of rewilding. i'm not a big fan of breeding-back programs and i'll cover a couple reasons why:
much like how dogs consist of a smaller total gene pool than wolves despite looking more diverse, modern cows lack genetic diversity compared to the aurochs. there's no reconstructing what was lost in domestication, and breeding towards any very specific goal often results in lowering of genetic diversity due to inbreeding
although the project claims to be using genetics to guide their process, i have no doubt there's also using phenotype (what the animal looks like). what if the most aurochs-like genes turn out to produce a sickly bottle baby that isn't suitable for rewilding? what if the most aurochs-looking cattle share very few genes with aurochs?
as barley rightly points out, the money going into this project could be better spent protecting other animals in their biome. a good example is the wisent or european bison, which inhabits a similar (although not identical) biome to the aurochs and is struggling to recover from going extinct in the wild.

Hello I am busting in uninvited to say that I adore the colour patterns on this horse. The roaning over the eye and the asymmetrical face markings are very cute. Sal also seems to have a sweet sleepy face and I think he is the kind of horse that I would love to hang out with

I remember very little of this movie but having reviewed images of this horse I must conclude that it is very beautiful. I'm sure they made him fully black to make him seem more intimidating but in fact it just increases his handsomeness. Disney go back to making your horses look cool challenge impossible
I see that thou hast reviewed every generation of MLP except G5. What thinkest thou of G5?
I have just reviewed G5 here but I will take this opportunity to expand further here as I will take any opportunity to soapbox about my special interests.
I find myself appreciating how G5 is specifically aimed at younger audiences with less appeal for adult fans as if I was an executive at Hasbro my first note on the board for a new season would be 'prevent bronies from doing that again'. However I think that in doing so they shied away (<- little horse joke for you) from some of the personality of the earlier seasons where they really were funny little horses in a funny horse land.
The drop in animation quality and the switch to 3D animation for the longer form content combined with the lower quality of the toys is a little sad for a series partly kept going by how passionate fans are over the excellent quality of the older toys and the fun animation and character designs.
That said I would still put it on for my young niece and have fun drawing ponies because it's fine it's just not incredible. Also I give an entire bonus point for adding in blazes and socks for more pony characters because that is so so cute

Watch out friend you are at risk of igniting my childhood interest in Warhammer. Fortunately this is age of sigmar and not 40k or it would be all over for you.
I must respect the work ethic of this horse for continuing to serve its rider loyally after contracting every disease a horse can contract. The eye that the model painter has for gradients and shading should also be noted as it is most excellent.

I am very impressed by the patience and calmness of the horse to have all of this equipment placed upon it without entering a rightful state of panic. Part of the fun of having a horse friend is working with them to reduce their stress levels on encountering new things just like they would learn from their herd in the wild and the owner of this pony should feel very proud of their hard work

Gen 5 My Little Pony?

I must confess I have very mixed feelings towards the ponies of this generation I am a big fan of how they have several more horselike physical features such as socks, blazes, and distinct hooves but I am a little resentful of how they have lost a lot of their horsiness in terms of behaviour. Also as someone who likes to play toys the drop in toy quality is quite a disappointment even from G4 toys which were not that good.
Even with these caveats the show is cute fun for younger children and I am always in favour of shows which introduce a new generation of foals to little pony fun.

I could not be happier to see my beloved draught horses represented in pokemon and they truly capture their bulk and power. Whats more I absolutely love donkeys and mules so seeing mudbray as a cute squishy donkey is as good as it could possibly get
