An ongoing RANT – REVIEW – REWRITE of Surrender
NSFW warning
That’s right, I paid for this, I spend precious time and I do it, because I’m petty and so you don’t have to suffer through this godawful story.
First things first, why am I doing this? Well, like I said, I’m petty and making this a fun learning experience helps me cope. But really, it’s because I’m sick of bad writers stomping into a community, they know nothing about only to spew dangerous misinformation. “It’s fiction, chill!” you might say, but please consider that sex related injuries surged after Shades of Grey gained mass popularity. People read sexy stories and feel inclined to spice up their bedroom affairs, that’s perfectly fine and understandable, but they don’t really sit down and research, do they? Not really. That’s why it’s important to you as a writer to 1. make it clear that you are portraying fiction and readers should treat it as such and 2. research thoroughly and write about safe practices.
And no, Pixelberry, watching the SoG movies was not “doing your research”
Also, while we’re on the subject of SoG: This terrible, horrible, no good, very bad series has popularised the glorification of abuse under the guise of a BDSM relationship. That hurts. It misrepresents kink communities, makes light of the abuse survivors have suffered and gaslights people who are still in abusive relationships into believing that there really wasn’t any abuse at all, it was really just romance. I hope I don’t have to explain how dangerous this is and how that should disqualify SoG as source material.
I’ll go about this chapter by chapter. Marking red flags, explaining why they are red flags and how better research could have avoided them. I’ll also poke fun at just plain dumb stuff, inconsistencies and decisions because comic relief is important and we’re gonna need it! To keep you from spending any money on this I will pick every single diamond choice, so you don’t have to. The Parts will be linked below.
My credentials for doing all this:
