Things are picking up a bit!

A few new people have joined the Hot Nonbinary Telegram group in a flurry, and we’re throwing ideas around. We’ve even got one current-events article with an interview.

Project dormant

I have reluctantly admitted to myself that I just don’t have the personal resources to make this project happen! It’s taken a while, I know.

A couple of people have submitted articles, and I will email them soon to let them know and to apologise.

I’m not ruling out that this will happen in future, but right now I have enough project commitments to keep me busy!

Article request: the UK government’s response to the #TransInquiry report

You know the one. *cringe* Let’s have more nonbinary voices speaking out about this, in more and different kinds of media!

Article request: your outfit

You know those "recreate the look" articles (read: adverts) in glossy fashion mags? Something like that, with a black and white sketch/other kind of drawn art of you (or a friend) in an awesome outfit, with labels for what each item is and where you bought it.

Article request: black and white comic

You know how newspapers often have a little funny comic somewhere? Maybe something like that, but about anything you like. It doesn’t have to have a nonbinary focus, similar to the way a comic in a newspaper doesn’t have to be about some news item.

It could be a regular every-issue comic, or a one-off.

The most excellent kyliamiskell designed us three logos, and the bomb design won today in a Twitter poll, so - we now have a logo. :) Thank you, Kylia!

Article request: podcasts

A list of podcasts by nonbinary people, with brief description of each, and what you think of it. A bit like many small reviews rolled into one article.

We now have a menu link for our article requests tag, and I would like to take this opportunity to ask what you’d like to read about in the zine. Please send your requests using our ask box, and your requests will be tagged appropriately. Hopefully the lure of being paid for articles will tempt contributors to write your request.

In related news, if you would like to be added to our contributors’ mailing list, please feel free to drop your email address into the ask box. We’ll periodically email with information about writers’ deadlines, article requests, and any changes to the submission guidelines.

Article requests

I will periodically suggest ideas for articles like a bossy newspaper editor, and if someone sees the idea and says “yes I could write 200-500 words on that” then they will probably be published.

Today’s request is:

Open Barbers in London are soon to reopen in their newly renovated newly acquired premises. They’re a barbers/hairdressers that are lovely and a safe space for trans and gender non-conforming and nonbinary people, that ask your pronouns at point of booking.

Have you had your hair cut there? Are you up for writing about them, their renovations, their successful fundraising, and their impending reopening? Do you feel like interviewing them?

Submission ideas

We’ve had one submission already, which I am very excited about! But someone pointed out to me that the submission guidelines are really vague, so I thought I’d throw a few ideas in to get you started.

Articles on these subjects are very welcome, but please feel free to deviate wildly.

The passing of beloved gender non-conforming artists this year, from a nonbinary (and preferably POC for Prince) perspective.

Scotland’s progress towards nonbinary legal recognition, and/or the status of the Trans Equality Enquiry (whose report was released in January).

Interviews with nonbinary people you know who are achieving positive things creatively and/or professionally.

Some significant positive progress in nonbinary recognition in recent times, maybe with an interview with a nonbinary person about why it’s positive.

A review of a book/album/movie/or something by a nonbinary person (or centrally featuring a nonbinary person).

Please feel free to retweet and tell us what you want to read about in something a bit like a nonbinary newspaper.

From the guidelines:

Articles should be around 250 words (one zine page) or 550 words (two zine pages) long.

We like:

News and current events about nonbinary people and nonbinary issues.

Articles about political events that include or focus on nonbinary people.

Interviews with nonbinary people who are currently working on a project. This project does not have to have any kind of gender or LGBT focus.

Reviews of books, movies, video games or other media that contain canonically nonbinary main characters or non-fictional nonbinary people.

Pictures or photos for articles provided - but bear in mind that every page except the front and back cover will be in black and white. Please see the section below on photo submissions, as they also apply to photos and images submitted as part of written pieces.

Writers will be paid relative to the number of copies sold, as well as receiving a free copy of the zine.

Hot Nonbinary zine - submissions open

Submissions are now open for Hot Nonbinary, a zine where we’re the default. No drawing attention to identity labels or pronouns, just acknowledging us as people who are more than just our genders.

There is currently no deadline - this is such early days that we’re still at the putting-out-feelers stage.
