“Oh, righty, of course,“ Daisy said, “Yeah, we don’t want you getting sick.“
“God yeah.” Penelope said with a sigh and shook her head. She hated being sick, and definitely didn’t want a cold or anything now.
“I’ll see you around though, right?”

“Oh, righty, of course,“ Daisy said, “Yeah, we don’t want you getting sick.“
“God yeah.” Penelope said with a sigh and shook her head. She hated being sick, and definitely didn’t want a cold or anything now.
“I’ll see you around though, right?”
“Oh my god..” Alfie muttered as he glanced around his bedroom. What an absolute mess! Clothes had been thrown about the place and empty alcoholic bottles had been left lying about. What on earth happened last night?
Penelope was checking herself out in the mirror in the guy’s bathroom when she finally heard him moving around. Last night had been crazy, a mess of too many drinks and Penelope feeling that little bit too lonely, so it hadn’t taken much for her to think going home with the guy was a good idea. And she didn’t regret in the morning either. It was fun.
She made her way back to the bedroom and popped her head around the corner with smile. “Looks like sleeping beauty is awake.”
“Come on, the weather is… sorta nice. Up to play some football? Please?“
“Me playing football? No way.” Penelope said while giggling. “I’m sorry, but sport isn’t really my thing at all. We could do something else?”
Oliver looked up, pulled from his thoughts and he let out a short laugh, leaning against the back of the couch. He let out a breath. “Yeah uh…I know I do.” He said before brushing it off and moved to sit up and get some water from the kitchen. He leaned against the wall as he went, trying not to make it obvious to his friend.
He returned with a glass of water a few moments later and let himself fall into the couch upon his return. He sipped out of the glass of water and looked over to the blonde. “That sounds good. I think I could go for a terrible movie right about now.”
Oliver set the glass down on the table next to him and wrapped his arms around his chest, letting out a breath again. He coughed before taking another drink of water.
Penelope couldn’t help but feel a little awkward as she tried to get things sorted. Ollie was clearly not all there and there was something going on. He seemed distracted and tired and maybe ill and Penelope didn’t know whether to bring it all up or just pretend it wasn’t happening.
Eventually, she decided to leave it for now, knowing that if it was her she’d prefer to deal with whatever it was by herself until she was ready to share. So she just grabbed a stack of dvds while Ollie got himself a glass of water and put them on the couch so they were ready when he got back.
“Well, you choose one of these, or have a flick through netflix, and I’ll go quickly change into some pjs.”
“To each their own,” he shrugged. “I’m not particularly religious now, but I was raised a Christian, so don’t worry. I know the whole devout thing.”
“That’s interesting.I didn’t peg you as the type with a religious upbringing.”
“So how far away is yours?”
“Yeah yeah, sure…” Leo laughed, shaking his head as she burst out laughing. This was one of those conversations he had no control over, so it was usually best to just leave her to it, let her run with her plan until she’d seen it through.
“Good, you should, because you know I’ll do what’s best in the end – I always do,” he said, nodding his head. “Thank God you’re not Dad, one’s enough, we don’t need another one of him around. No way, no how.”
“Yeah, I’m sure you always do.” She said soberly. Sometimes it was easy to get caught up in messing around and her own ideas and thoughts and end up barrelling over whoever she was talking with, but she always hit a wall and realised what she was doing. Not having really kept in contact with hadn’t helped, because they had both changed and she had to remember that as well as keeping in mind that they were essentially the same people. Just because she didn’t see Leo go through things, it didn’t mean he hadn’t. Five years was a long time.
“Yeah, one of current dad is definitely enough. I wouldn’t mind maybe an alternate universe dad though who actually supported our choices.”
Luke merely laughed as she scribbled her number on his arm, letting her carry. When she continued on to ask for his, however, he frowned. “Sorry, love, no number to give you… but feel free to call the pub if you want to.”
“Hmm, I’ll definitely keep that in mind.” She said with a smile.
“See you around then.” She gave a little wave and a bow, before turning and humming to herself as she left the apartment.
“I could always make you a dragon cupcake,” Emma offered with a grin. “It won’t be life sized…but ya know…you could enjoy it for a bit. Well if we’re friends we should probably exchange names. I’m Emma.”
“Oh my God! Would you?” Penelope said excitedly. “That would be so amazing. I love cake. You must be a pretty great baker. I’m Penelope.”
Leo laughed, nodding his head in response to what she said, and then murmured, “Got it, I’ll just show up and look pretty or something like that.” Honestly, it would be nice for them all to get together, he hadn’t made anywhere near enough effort with their friends lately and he needed to change that before he had nothing left. “Yeah, we can, and we will.”
As she continued on about getting a roomie, he nodded again, even if he wasn’t all that keen on the idea. He didn’t get on with people all that well sometimes, but it wasn something he was certainly working on to change. “We’ll see I guess,” he answered. “It’s a matter of finding the right person then.”
“Well, look the pretty the best you an. Everyone knows I’m the pretty sibling.” Penelope burst out laughing at her own teasing and collapsed into Leo for a bit, glad at how natural and relaxed she could feel around him again.
“Okay, good. I’ve said my bit and I’ll stop now.” She said, putting her hands up and feeling a little guilty for pushing so much. “I do kinda know when to leave well enough alone, and I definitely know you need to be able to make your own decisions. I’m not Dad.”
“And that’s exactly what I think they are: terrible,“ Kiki responded, “But at least your not all serious. Those people are worse. Oh, and I know I’ll get there. I’m young, so I have lots of time to make it happen.“
“Fair enough.” Penelope said, nodding with an impressed look on her face. She was a little in awe of Kiki and her drive. She couldn’t help but think how nice it must be to have motivation and be productive enough to actually do something with your life.
“Well, I try,“ she blushed, “I can be mean though, I have my moments. Just last week, I called a friend a ‘pig’. And I meant it in the worst way. He’s always flirting with people and being a bit of a sexist. And I got angry. But I just try to control it. Anger doesn’t lead to anything good. Maybe I’m just better at controlling than others.“
“Well he sounds a bit like a pig, so I don’t think anyone can fault you for calling him that.” Penelope said with a shrug.
She noticed then that everyone else was starting to leave the beach, and they should probably do the same. “I’m really enjoying getting to know you, but I should probably change into something else and get myself warmed up a bit.”
“That actually sounds fun…riding around a dragon. You’d never have to worry about your car breaking down or the bus being late. No traffic ever…unless you get stuck behind a flock of birds. As for friends…I could always use more of those…and I mean if we’re gonna be dragon riders obviously a friendship is a must.”
“You’re making me sad that I don’t have a dragn now.” Penelope said with a pout and screwed up her face.
“Good. Then we’re friends. Hopefully the bestest of friends eventually. You seem really awesome.”
It was then Nolan realised he didn’t like to be read so accurately. He liked when people talked about him, but he didn’t realise right away that he was that open. He bit the inside of his cheek, forcing a smile on his face.
“Not bad. Religion is conditional, depending on the person.”
“Well, I hope you don’t count my religion as ‘conditional’.” Penelope asked, but a smirk quickly found it’s way to her lips. “If you do, you’re gonna have to be careful. You see I have a good relationship with the old man upstairs and he might just smite you down.” She teased.
Luke nodded, doing his best not to start laughing – yes, he had been hinting, in a less than subtle manner… and he would have only ended up worse if she stayed much longer. He’d never been one to be subtle, it wasn’t in his nature. “As if I would,” he said with a soft laugh, getting to his feet. “Anf sure, a drink would be good sometime.”
Penelope looked around and found a marker sitting on the side. She grabbed it and didn’t even hesitate to take Luke’s arm and write her number down on his skin. “Here. Now you can hit me up if you ever get bored and need some one to keep you entertained in this static small town. And if you give me yours, I can arrange that drink, and hit you up if I fancy hearing any more cool travelling stories.
“Ah, I thought he was someone everyone should know,” he laughed, rubbing at the back of his neck. He had never been all that good with words and, truthfully, before PTSD had been mentioned in the army, his knowledge of mental health had been pretty horrific. Should he have acknowledged her mention of episodes? Should he not have? Was that something he should be doing? Just the thought of it threw him and he shook his head before extending his hand, “I’m Ross. Did I say that? Thanks for the tip. I don’t really get moody. Just reclusive.” Or at least, he used to. Now he could be as moody as the rest of them, even if he didn’t like to acknowledge it.
“Well, if you fancied saying hi to him one day I would definitely recommend it. He’s a hilarious guy.”
Penelope reached out and shook his hand. “I’m Penelope. It’s great to meet you Ross. You’re lucky if you don’t get moody. I can be a real bitch when I get tired. But reclusive doesn’t really sound fun either, so I don’t envy you that.” Sometimes Penelope got a bit fed up with people, but as extrovert she couldn’t stay away from people for long. She thrived on the social contact and being surrounded by people, and even when she was feeling very low that did help.
Leo smiled as she formulated her plan, realising how good of an idea that would actually be, and then said, “You know what? We should do that.” His smile brightened, and then he nodded his head in agreement. “I don’t remember the last time I got together with a big group of people, it’s been too long, honestly… I guess real life took over, though, didn’t it?”
When she asked that question, he shrugged his shoulders. “Maybe, I haven’t thought about it much, but it’s finding somebody, isn’t it? Which isn’t always that easy… especially not when you’re me.”
“Great! I’ll arrange it and make sure it's awesome. You just have to turn up.” She said with an excited smile and shot finger pistols in Leo’s direction. “Life did take over, for all of us. Me and Ollie have barely hung out this past year as well, but were changing that, and we can change this as well.”
“I’m sure you could do it. There’s always people looking for a place to stay. Even if it’s not a friend, you can find people looking to share through letting agents and online and stuff.” She said, smiling encouragingly. She didn’t want to sound like she was trying to push him into finding someone to share with, because she was just trying to make sure he understood he had options. She wanted Leo to know he had options so he could where he wanted to be.
“Then it’s okay, I guess. As long as you’re not mean just because you can. Then again, it’s your life. You can do whatever you want. It’s just that I will never be mean when it’s uncalled for.“
“You seem like such a great person. When I was younger I thought people like you didn’t really exist, that no one was really nice or good. But I’m really impressed that you are and glad I got to meet you.”
