weekends in the parlor
Spring is nearly over, and it’s been a full one. In May we planted the garden. Mendel continued work on the basement, framing out the laundry room while his cousins built some furniture. In June Joe & his lady moved in together (to a place nearby!), and our cousin Dave & his lady Elena moved in! Mendel expanded their room by a few square feet by putting up a wall in the parlor nook. Upstairs the office was upgraded with a new shelf/worktop built by our old friend Max. The Witkem Wee One continues to rule and delight the house.
For months The Weinberg has been studying hard for his engineering test, which happens at the end of this week. Crunch time calls for 2 computers.
In the basement, Mendel is building an enclosed laundry nook, a workshop, and an arts & crafts station. Up on the top floor I'm making costumes for upcoming performances.
Sunday at Witkem House: entertainment by Rite Aid; food by Mendel.
Spring is cautiously considering arriving...
Happy Holidays!

Today marks 3 months since the arrival of the Witkem Wee One!
So much has been going on here at Witkem that the past month+ has flown by. The wee one arrived early and is doing all the adorable and exasperating things that babies do... Here is a picture of her room shortly before she decided it was time to join the party. Progress has been made since then - walls painted, furniture brought in, stacks of tiny onesies. And, in keeping with third floor tradition, a new little object has appeared.
The floors in the new room for the wee one are a challenge: there's water damage, inconsistent levels, and once that's all fixed, they'll need to be sanded and finished.

We now have new windows and a new door on the first floor! M&m already hear the difference, and this winter they'll be much warmer. The growing pile of construction debris in the back will disappear midweek, giving us just enough time to spruce up for the Wee One celebration.
Ground floor progress: The bathroom is starting to look like a bathroom again! The tiles & carefully selected grout look fantastic! The floors in the hall and living room have been restored to their original glory, and there's a cheerful coat of terra cotta peach paint on the living room walls. Mendel ripped out the Masonite that covered the basement walls & is painting the stone grey. Tonight we'll move furniture back into the living room & M&m can start nesting (again)... Witkem Wee One eta = approximately 6 weeks!
You guys, M&m are having a baby & we're having a party!!!!!
(well, a BBQ. The Witkem Wee One is scheduled to arrive at the end of the summer!)
The room for the Witkem wee one now has a wall!
Construction on the first floor bathroom is fully underway. Once the walls were torn out the frame of the original back door was revealed. Mendel's theory is that there was only a half-bath on the ground floor, and that the door was moved to make room for a full bathroom. Out in the garden most of the plants are thriving (a fungus is causing brown spots on the ivy and slugs have been having a field day with some of the other foliage). The cherry tomatoes are super happy to have a cage to climb, and we even have a volunteer squash that probably snuck in with the herbs.
This weekend Larry and Mendel are making a wee room for the wee one! The closets in the first floor living room are being combined with the smallway (the tiny hall that led to the back of the first floor kitchen). Mendel is also leading "The Great Purge" - he's cleared out the basement and will be ripping out the masonite walls later today. The first floor bathroom will be gutted shortly and a fresh new interior will be constructed this week!
