I'm opening up comms after ages of hemming and hawing. I have a comms section set up over at Kofi. I haven't done coms in a hot minute so please be patient with me. If there isn't a flat rate on something or you want me to make something that isn't listed go ahead and ask. I'll write up what the text says under the break since it might be hard to read.

9 years ago (minus 2 days), I posted this image to announce the launch of my Kickstarter for a game called Pixel Art Academy, an adventure where you would become an art student and learn how to draw.

While the path hasn't led all the way to the city of Retropolis yet, 2 days from now, on the 9th anniversary of the Kickstarter launch, the game's Learn Mode will launch into Early Access on Steam. It's a smaller version of the full game I imagined, but the good part is that you will be able to start learning with it straight away.

Fun hagfish facts:

they don't have eyes, and their eye spots can only vaguely detect darkness and light

they have 3 to 4 pairs of sensory tentacles around their mouth

their skin is attached to the underlying tissues only in specific spots, loosely sliding around everywhere else;

they bite into carcasses, then tie their bodies into knots and use that tension to rip out a chunk of meat. loose skin helps with doing that without harm to themselves;

they can excrete UNFATHOMABLE amounts of slime. proteins that form slime in contact with water, to be precise - so we don't really know how much total slime they can produce, each time we've tried to estimate we've simply run out of water.

screammm ive never signed up for art fights because i've never had characters i want other people to draw but apparently they have put in their tos that you are not allowed to submit art attacks that trace 3d models or photographs that you, the artist, have taken yourself.

to be clear, direct traces of 3d models and photographs you have taken personally or are using within the bounds of their licensing are extremely common and completely acceptable, even in professional pipelines to produce commercial works.

having this kind of extremely strict - and extremely unenforceable - rule in a hobbyist event that includes a lot of kids and people otherwise just starting out is completely ridiculous. there's no need for it. tracing is cool and awesome and you should do it if it helps you as long as you're being up front about how you're sourcing your images

places like wikimedia commons, the public domain image archive, unsplash, and pexels have between them millions of images that are free to use for both personal and commercial projects. there's absolutely no good reason to not take advantage of these resources, and even less for not using your own photographs if you're so inclined. work smarter !
