Iâve been having trouble restarting this blog, so Iâve made a new one featuring Royâs daughter. Sheâs magically grown up and is temporarily taking his place. You can find here here @pinion-shafts-and-flanges
I kind of want to restart this blog. Itâs old and 90% of the people I interacted with and helped shape Roy are gone. But I still like the character. But working out who he knows/doesnât know might get messy so Iâm thinking of breaking it up into AUs. Whatâs happened is the main verse, but thereâll also be an AU for when he first started working for the Industries when he was slightly less grumpy.Â
Starting Over
Roy took the bottle and took a gulp, tilting his head back. What he swallowed was about the equivalent of a shot...give or take. Roy took one more swallow for good measure before he handed the bottle back.Â
âAre you sayinâ alcoholâs always the answer for feelinâ better?â he grinned. ââCause I donât think thatâs a good copinâ mechanism.âÂ
Also Iâm not dead but Iâve been spending a lot more time on my BLU Medic blogÂ
Starting Over
âAh, câmon now, donât go around callinâ emâ goblins,â Roy replied, trying to hold back a laugh. âItâs not all fun anâ games, but thereâs good times too. Thereâs nothinâ like seeinâ your own kid take their first steps towards you. Or hearinâ âem talk.â Roy smiled as he described the good moments parenting had, but his smile faded. At this rate heâd never see Jamesâ first steps or hear his first word.Â
Roy smiled at her excitement. âSure thing. Just tell me where and when,â he replied, reaching down to stroke the foxâs ears. âIâd be happy to accompany you to...do whatever you do.âÂ
A bouquet of red roses arrives for the Engineer. The note attached simply reads "Meet me at our spot. -B" and there's an Engie logo stamped on the corner.
Roy wasnât one for flowers. But the gesture touched him and he found an empty coffee can and filled it with water for the roses. They probably wouldnât last long in his care, but he still appreciated it.Â
âDidnât think you were an old-fashioned romantic,â Roy said as he arrived at their spot.Â
Roy took off his overalls and tucked himself into bed. The springs groaned against him and the pillow felt too thin under his head, but the sleeping arrangements would do. âSo tomorrow, we get a new truck,â he muttered, already falling asleep. âAnâ then we...â Roy fell asleep before he could finish that thought.Â
âImagine that,â Roy replied, trying to imagine what the fox would look like as a human. Sheâd have brown hair like the colour of her coat and it would be thick like her tail. And maybe on the shorter side, seeing as her legs were a bit short for a regular fox.Â
âYou want me to come with you so we can face him together?â he asked after a pause. Abigail always liked it when Roy played pretend with her, perhaps the fox wanted the same.Â

Roy smiled at the mention of a sentry. âYeah, letâs do that,â he replied. The thought of having something mechanical keep watch comforted him, knowing it wouldnât accidentally fall asleep.Â
And knowing Buck would be with him comforted him as well. Roy didnât have a good relationship with his father, but the old man taught him one thing: to never give up. So if he made it this far from the base and had Buck with him, things wouldnât be so bad. âLetâs get some rest.âÂ
Starting Over

âYâknow, I never really wanted kids either. Abigail was a bit of an accident, but I canât imagine life without her now,â Roy replied. âThe whole thingâs rewardinâ and⊠well, itâs hard sometimes. Tantrums never get easier, thereâs a bunch of sleepless nights, but at the end of it all, I love âem.â Roy wasnât paying too much attention to what he was saying. While heâd rather keep his wife a secret on this not-date, he fell for Emâs question. âYeah, she needs all the help she can get. Some days I just wish we could switch places and she works here while I get to be at home with the kids.âÂ
âWell, I donât know if sheâd like this job,â Em said casually. âItâs really not for everyone. But I guess I understand wanting to help out.â She sipped her beer, swishing the liquid in her mouth absentmindedly. Would she have have wanted to help her brotherâs kids? His wife? Probably, she thought. She wouldâve done anything for him. âI donât think I could do the whole⊠quiet life thing. Settling down in a suburb somewhere with a white picket fence and 2.5 kids. Iâd be bored out of my skull,â she added with a grin.
Roy smiled. âThings is, itâs not quiet at all,â he replied. âKids throw tantrums anâ theyâre messy anâ theyâre always two steps ahead of you. If itâs gone quiet, that means theyâre up to somethinâ.âÂ
Roy took a swig of his beer. âBut when Iâm done this job, Iâm gonna move my family outta the city and get us a farm. Get some chickens, goats, a few horses, maybe even a cow.â He stared into the sunset, imagining his perfect life. As far as he was concerned, he blew this not-date with Em. She wouldnât be interested in him knowing he was married. So, he might as well just enjoy his beer, the company, and the sunset.Â

* Her expression hitched at the mention of the implant, but it wasnât until Roy finished such a sentiment, that he understood that it wasnât the imageryâor even the memory of the necessary pain that bothered her.*
ââŠIâŠdonât have one.â * She lulled, stiffly averting her gaze.*  ââIâm still petitioning the owner for the rights.â
â âŠHe doesnât seem to think itâs âworth the expenseâ, since Iâm not supposed to be out of my quarters during the raids, anyways.â
* Her dark brown eyes then narrowed, with the rather classist implication.*
â âŠAnd yet Iâm wearing Kevlar, in 90 plus degree weather, just for âshits-and-gigglesâ apparentlyâ since such accidents are âneeeeeeverâ going to happen.â
âReally?â Roy looked genuinely surprised. âI mean accidents donât happen much inside the base, but...thereâs nine of us and one of âem likes workinâ with explosives and another likes settinâ things on fire. Things get messy from time to time.âÂ
It would be a shame if she was involved in an accident. A replacement cook would be hired, but he was starting to like her. âNow, uh...â he leaned in closer towards her, âIâm not sayinâ I got the authority to give someone a chip but...well letâs just say I know where theyâre stored and how to activate âem.âÂ

â âYou should put up some mesh wire.â Â * She suggested, taking ahold of the slice and offering the new section to the hen.* Â â âItâll block the way, but itâll let in the draft, from the hallwayâat leastâwhen you smith things.â
â⊠Iâll bet you could screw a bunch of little hooks into the walls, lace it up, and just roll back one side, when youâre done using it.â
âMaybe...â he replied, but he wasnât wild about the idea of the other mercs seeing his chickens. The chickens were a badly kept secret -- Roy liked to think no one knew of his chickens when in reality, most knew about them. âOr maybe I can just get âem a respawn chip. Donât have to worry about them that way.âÂ
Roy glanced at his left wrist. âBut that thing hurt so much it might kill âem!â he let out a small laugh. âDid yours scar over? âCause mine never really healed,â he added in, assuming the cook was also a recipient of the respawn chip.Â
Roy wondered if maybe he should invite the Pyro in to warm up. But inviting someone from the other team into the base wouldnât be a good idea.Â
Roy gave him a final nod before going to the safety of his base.Â

âDidnât think you were an old-fashioned romantic,â Roy said as he arrived at their spot.Â
Roy locked the truck as he left it in the parking lot.Â
In Royâs opinion, the beds werenât all that bad â heâd seen far worse in other motels in his life.Â
Roy sat on the edge of a bed. It was soft enough and he decided it would be good enough to sleep on. âBedbugsâll be the least of our problems,â Roy muttered, kicking his shoes off.Â
Buck sat beside him and put an arm around his shoulders. âRoy, I want ya tâ think about this long anâ hard. Do we go forward or go back? Either way, Iâm with ya anâ I ainât gonna make ya face it alone.âÂ
Roy rested a hand on Buckâs arm. âI wanna sleep on it,â he replied, leaning into Buck. ââm too tired to make any decisions right now.â If he was honest, he wouldnât mind staying like that forever, with Buck at his side. But he knew heâd need to make a decision sometime soon.Â

â âŠI wouldnât know, honestly .â * She pointed out, cooing slightly as the animal responded well to the attention.* ââThe only one I got to be around, regularly, was the tame one they let out at the pet-shop.â
â âShe ate all the escaped crickets, from the reptile cages, and pretty much ignored anyone who was walking around looking at stuff.â
ââŠBut that would make sense.â * Alex relented, in hindsight.* ââIf itâs a âNature-vs. Nurtureâ thingâŠWe lost at least two cats in the woods, from those damned coyotesâand I canât imagine nanaâs wheat farm was much better.â
ââYou could hide a whole CAR in the fields, in the middle of the year.â
âWell I can assure you this galâs a friendly one,â he replied, slicing another grape and handing it over. âBut thatâs another reason why I donât let her out of the workshop -- Iâve heard coyotes durinâ the night sometimes. Sheâd be an easy meal, easier than a cat.âÂ
Roy popped a grape into his mouth. âI donât even like âem leavinâ the workshop. This little one escaped on me.âÂ
