Sculpting Spaces
Depicted, top to bottom: Senga Nengudi, RSVP 1975-1980, static and activated; Senga Nengudi, R.S.V.P. Reverie – Embrace, 2016; Louise Bourgeois; Untitled, 2004
Then, in the bottom two drawings, I imagine a space where Louise Bourgeois’ sculpture could be activated like the original RSVP work of Senga Nengudi’s. This space would require intense heat. The activating performer’s would have to be suited to survive it.

ARTHI 6430-001: Writing Art Casual Introduction Assignment
I’m a Los Angeles-based artist. I’ve been living in LA for over six years and my family’s roots here go back about a century. My artist’s statement says that my work “aims to revive smothered nuances and disrupt essentialisms.” In the wake of recent events, however, I would like to revise my aim to the naive and incalculable goal of reducing the international body count over the next several years. I don’t know how my old goal and my new one relate to one another. I don’t know if poetry has the capacity to reduce violence. At some point I think I will have to solidify my suspicion that it does into a belief, so that I can write without restraint.
My practice is interdisciplinary, although my primary medium has been film and video for the past nine years or so. I received a bachelor’s degree in film production in 2012, which I started at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and finished at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. This education means that I privilege Aristotelian narrative in the way I perceive and create, whether or not I desire to do so. It also means that I consciously consider issues of audience and capital when I create work. My films tend to deal with the ways in which bodily transformations can disrupt signifiers of sex and gender.
Text has become increasingly prominent in my work to the point where I sometimes leave images behind entirely. I make text pieces, poems, poem-films, and poetic essays, and this year I have also been working with poetry as performance. Part of the goal of the work I do with text is to feel limits of language. I continue to work in visual media so that I might transcend those limits. I am interested in the parallels between bodily and linguistic signifiers that bolster essentialisms.
This semester, I plan to use writing as my primary, if not exclusive, medium. This work includes a guided study in the form of a diaristic but scholarly essay on vestigial notions of pleasure. I also plan to podcast a poem every day for fifty days. I am interested in writing in a way that creates sensation. I am interested in sensations that enable dissent.
