Florida’s Dozier School for Boys is one of the country’s most infamous reform schools, where for almost a century, former students described enduring extremely violent physical and sexual abuse, torture, hard labor, neglect and murder. Nearly 100 boys died, and it is a burial ground for 55 victims and possibly many more. The majority of students were black, and often committed less serious crimes than their white counterparts. Despite findings of misconduct, as well as multiple lawsuits filed against the school, the horror was allowed to continue until 2011 when it was closed for good.

Over 500 former students, named “The White House Boys”, have publicly divulged the abuse they received in the 1950s and 1960s. “The White House” refers to a small concrete blood stained building where their punishment with leather and metal straps was meted out. The violence was brutal and gruesome, and left many of the students seriously injured. Some were shackled with tire irons for weeks, raped in a crawl space called “The Rape Room” and many other incidents. They’ve reportedseeing dead bodies, and being forced to dig graves.

Beginning in 2013, forensic anthropologists from the University of South Florida identified 98 documented deaths between 1901 and 1973. They discovered 55 graves, and 51 sets of remains. Identification has been challenging due to the lack of documentation, and it’s believed there are many more victims. Common documented causes of death were drowning and physical trauma.

In 2017, Florida officially apologized to 24 survivors, but not before conducting several investigations. Despite acknowledging the misconduct at the school and that the students’ Constitutional rights were violated, no criminal charges were filed. As of 2018 there is talk of a bill to pay back victims and their families but it has not passed yet.
