Been out of the hp fandom for awhile for obvious reasons (mainly being genderfluid and it taints the whole thing for me knowing the woman behind hp would despise me just for existing), but lately I accidentally fell back into the hyperfixation hole and it’s been so difficult to leave it, so I’m hoping if I just post my thoughts somewhere, then I can move on

So since I’m breaking down and making this blog, I’m fully committing to it being every hp thought that won’t leave me alone, which may include thoughts on the taboo ships like Sirry (Harry/Sirius) as some of those ships I really liked as a small kid and I know I still have some thoughts on them I never got to release, so might as well do it now

Lately the scenario I’ve been obsessed with imagining is one where almost all of canon happens except everything gets really horrible at the end and so Harry’s given the chance to go back and relive his life but with one change of his choosing to give the Wizarding World a way better chance at survival

So for Fate™️ reasons he can’t pick his parents surviving, but let’s say he can choose something like “make it so it’s not possible for Wormtail to frame Sirius” so he can be raised by his godfather

Not only would it just give him a better life but it has the tactical advantage of giving him access to the Wizarding World and Slytherin’s locket way earlier to give him that head start advantage over Voldemort trying to come back to life

What ends up happening, the change that Death decides on, is that Sirius making Harry his heir comes out the second he does so, so everyone in the Wizarding World knows that Harry is the closest thing to his own kid and no one would believe for a second that Sirius would actually try to hurt the Potter family

(Another way for this to really stick and not seem like “oh he’s just naming him his heir now but he’ll change it after he betrays them” is that Sirius also blood adopts Harry through whatever ritual makes it so he’s accepted as a third parent and not overwrite Lily or James as a parent, that’s also public knowledge, so people definitely wouldn’t believe any traitor theories, but they are suspicious of polyamory rumors)

So Peter is still made secret keeper, especially now when it’s even more obvious how close James and Sirius are, he still betrays them so Lily and James die, but instead of accusing Sirius, Peter sets it up to look like the information was tortured out of him and then fakes his death leaving Sirius and Remus to mourn him

(I like the idea of Harry growing up with Sirius and Remus knowing Peter was a traitor but not being able to speak badly about him because he doesn’t have any actual proof so he just grumpily stays silent whenever Remus and Sirius are grieving him)

What I’m really obsessed with tho is the ripple effects of all this happening, I picture it as that it makes Harry’s life waaay easier, makes Voldemort trying to come back to life waaay more difficult without Harry having to do much, and makes the public waaaay more obsessed with Harry

Like I love everything about the Black Family being the closest thing Wizarding England has to a royal family, and I want Harry being fully seen as the people’s prince

But in Harry’s pov, because he’d have Sirius protecting him and not just letting the Daily Prophet write whatever they want about him, he thinks everyone’s less intense about him, just assumes that maybe people were so obsessed in the original timeline because he had been kept hidden right after Voldemort’s death and the mystery over where he is and what he’s doing stoked the fires of interest in him

But nope! They’re actually way more obsessed with him in this timeline (and so many of them are paternal towards him after getting to see Harry grow up from being a baby), he’s just experiencing what a decent parent would do for their famous kid

I just love the idea of Harry getting to live in a really nice timeline after going through a hellish one where things just work out for him (like he still has some cptsd from his original life even tho he’s more disconnected from it so it’s like a bad dream instead of an adult in a kid’s body, but he never has to explain why to anyone cause they’re all like “Aw is it the Black Family Madness :( poor dear Harry” and not think twice about it, if he tells anyone it’s completely on his own terms)

But he does still have bumps to deal with like hating Peter Pettigrew while everyone mourns him, his fame that he’s not yet aware of how intense it is, trying to track down Voldemort especially cause I have so many thoughts on Sirius trying to encourage play dates between Harry and the Weasley kids so he can have a normal childhood and Peter would not be sticking around for that if they were visiting the Burrow, so Harry has no idea where Peter is or how Voldemort even got into contact with him in the first place so he can’t find Voldemort

(I have so many thoughts on how those play dates would actually work out and the relationship between Remus and Sirius while Sirius is parenting Harry, but this is already so long so I’m ending it here but if anyone cares I can expand more on those points in a reblog)

Does anyone else ever think about how even tho Tom Riddle didn’t mean to kill Myrtle, her death still counted for shattering his soul, which means that even if Voldemort’s first death didn’t count against Harry and was counted as Lily’s kill, he’d still be on the hook for Quirrel’s death/Voldemort’s second death in his first year by that logic?

Idk I’m just always thinking about Harry worrying about the state of his soul and worried about being secretly unforgivably evil because of two events no one would really consider his fault, but apparently intent doesn’t matter

There’s a concept in English law called “transferred malice” that would seem to fit quite interestingly here.

If I understand it correctly, a person accidentally killing someone can be considered murder—i.e. having the same intent as murder for legal purposes—if harm was always intended by the action they took which resulted in another person’s death, or if death was a reasonably forseeable consequence of their intended harm. So say I deliberately wanted to injure someone by hitting them in the head with a cricket bat, and then they died because I hit them in the head with a cricket bat: I’d be liable for murder, because the malice behind my initial action is transferable to the crime of murder. I knew hitting them like that could kill them, even if I only meant to injure them. The intent to cause harm is not in doubt, and any argument about the extent of the harm intended is outweighed by the extent of the actual harm caused.

So while I tend to agree with you Riddle didn’t go into that bathroom knowing Myrtle Warren was hiding in there crying (I always felt that was an obvious callback to Hermione hiding in the bathroom crying in PS and almost getting killed when the boys accidentally locked the troll in there with her)—I think Myrtle was “in the wrong place at the wrong time”, she startled Riddle in the act of releasing the basilisk, was looked at directly by the basilisk potentially because she startled it too, and she was dead before either of them could really register it was going to happen: because why else would it end up being textually significant which bathroom she died in, if the basilisk could have just been sent to kill her in any random bathroom—Riddle did still 100% go in there for the sole purpose of releasing a basilisk on students. Even if we could argue that his intent was only ever to petrify muggleborns and sow fear among the non-pureblood students, that is still an intent to cause harm, and somebody getting killed was still a reasonably forseeable consequence of letting loose a giant monster capable of killing people in multiple ways up to and including just by glancing in their direction. As much as I really don’t like to acknowledge authorial intent in this series anymore (as a trans-nb person), I do wonder if the idea—however nebulous—of transferred malice influenced the choice to make Myrtle’s death “count” when making a horcrux.

I do also think Riddle was blatantly toying with the potential of killing people at that point. He always knew there was a chance somebody could die. Maybe he wasn’t deliberately engineering situations where only petrification could occur but did start out by choosing moments where petrification was more likely, getting a bit more reckless each time until he eventually escalated to situations where death was more and more the most probable outcome. Myrtle just happened to be the first person he killed, and she just happened to be muggleborn: I don’t believe he planned the exact circumstances, and I think it tells us something damning about his character and his politics that it could just as easily have been a pureblood girl who walked out of that stall to confront/surprise him and died in Myrtle’s place. It was technically unplanned but Riddle had been flirting with murder-by-basilisk for far too long for her death not to be considered murder on a technicality. (I also can’t envision a version of him that wouldn’t want to take some possessive form of credit for having killed her… maybe that counts for something towards ripping off a chunk of your soul?)

By contrast Harry had no idea just touching Quirrell/Voldemort would hurt him, let alone kill him, and only used the fact that it did to his advantage out of self defence when Quirrell-mort were actively trying to kill him first. Methodically taking out the horcruxes one by one is potentially a more complicated moral proposition with regard to intent, since intent to harm the horcrux is definitely necessary; you can’t really destroy one by accident. But again I think Harry diegetically and the author non-diegetically would rationalise this as being a different (read: justified, morally right) kind of violence. If killing Quirrell was defence of himself in PS, then it was defence of another in CoS because he only “killed” (dematerialised) Diary-Riddle to save Ginny. The other horcruxes were only destroyed to make Voldemort mortal, and causing harm to them would not in and of itself kill Voldemort: and Harry stopped himself (and anybody else, since the terrible book version of their final confrontation occurred under the baffling choice of giving them a massive passive audience) short of taking any direct action to try to kill Voldemort after all the horcruxes were destroyed. I.e. if Voldemort died it would need to be at his own hand and therefore entirely his own “fault” from the author’s perspective.

Then again, Joanne’s morality for this series very much boils down to “there are no good or bad actions, only good or bad teams” so we’re likely putting more thought into this than she ever did. After all, by DH Harry is apparently a-okay with internally rationalising the idea that unforgivable curses are only unforgivable if it’s the bad guys using them.

P.s. thank you OP for being so respectful and calling the poor girl by her name instead of “moaning” Myrtle. I hate that moniker too and also refuse to call her by it

Alright I hope you don’t mind me taking you out of the tags hun 🫣 because I just really wanna talk more about this, CoS obsesses me as a plot

#but I believe a lot of how hagrid's framing went down was less because of Tom being believable #(although l am now obsessed with the idea of Tom petrifying himself on purpose) #(tysm for that theory I love it) #but because Myrtle and Hagrid weren't purebloods #or well | *choose* to believe this is how/why because yeah as you pointed out we're putting a lot more thought into this) #I do think that it's probably even possible that there were people involved who realized that Hagrid's spider wasn't at fault #but they were okay with throwing a half giant kid under the bus if it meant that it LOOKED like the authorities had it under control #and then with poor Myrtle because she wasn't part of a prominent family or someone people 'cared' about #didn't have anyone to (not advocate but that's the closest word I can think of) advocate for her and make sure her real killer was found #and while Tom is smart this was actually less about how he's a genius #and more of an indication of the ways their society was failing that Voldemort was able to take advantage of

ABSOLUTELY and you should say it. My headcanon is a lot less about Riddle being smart enough to evade detection and a lot more about him being just dumb enough to panic in that moment.

Because of course he would get away with it either way. Of course Myrtle’s family do not have the capacity to meaningfully take the magical world to task over the death of their daughter (and honestly, I have more headcanons here about exactly how terrible they are about handling muggle families in situations where muggleborn kids never come home from the magic world, because the Ministry is… much too comfortable causing nonconsensual brain damage to muggles just to avoid responsibility or inquiry). Of course nobody would really question his portrayal of Hagrid as violent and dangerous and potentially criminal without evidence, because their prejudice doesn’t allow them to consider for a moment that Hagrid could actually be the vulnerable one in this situation (and here, again, I have more headcanons… because these boys knew each other. Hagrid knew and trusted Riddle way too well for this to just be a passing acquiantance). But also—and this is the lynchpin for me—what passes for a justice system in the magical world is rather clearly not operating to a muggle evidentiary standard. But Riddle is.

Because try as he might to excise this part of himself (don’t get me started on bifurcation of self with regards to This Fucking Guy), as much as he wants to “prune” it and deny it, Riddle is an immigrant to this world. He thinks the authorities will need evidence to pin this on Hagrid. Because so does Harry when he first finds out, having been raised in the muggle world, which is why he immediately sets about trying to dismantle the case against Hagrid by proving it must have been somebody else. So does Hermione, a muggleborn, who immediately sets about tearing to shreds the nonsense suggestion that an acromantula could have done this by figuring out what manner of creature actually could (with the help of another muggleborn student. These kids know about innocent until proven guilty and it is so so so important to me that they are the ones we see fighting back). We are expected to think there must have been evidence against Hagrid! even if it’s a child’s concept of evidence in a book about twelve year olds, because we live in a world where even in cases where arrests and convictions are frequently fuelled by biases and hatred, some form of evidence (be it circumstantial, manipulated, planted, or fabricated) is still necessary to proceed. Surely you can’t just get locked up for murder when there’s no proof! We haven’t yet learnt about how Sirius went down without even getting a trial; we haven’t seen the kangaroo court Fudge manages to pull together against Harry in OotP. Other than maybe his richer and purer friends telling him what their families might be able to get away with, which Riddle could assign to class privilege, we have no reason to believe Riddle knows any better than us just how low the burden of proof against Hagrid will be.

Riddle’s young here. He’s grappling for power, not comfortable in it. He’s sixteen and testing the limits of what he can get away with, too afraid of losing his place in this world that has taken him in and made him feel so special and important to really risk going as far as he could and probably wants to go, either too much a child or too much a coward yet to seize this moment as confidently as an adult Voldemort would be able to. And importantly, while we know Riddle is a halfblood, and we know Riddle knows it because he’s the one who reveals it to us, I genuinely think very few other characters in this world would know. And that creates a slightly more layered situation wherein Hagrid isn’t the only one whose word could arbitrarily be disbelieved or dismissed, and Myrtle isn’t the only person whose life is of little consequence to those in power. Riddle is coming from a potentially worse position than Myrtle: he’s poor, he’s an orphan, he’s muggle-raised if not potentially muggleborn, and the only thing he’s really got going for him to back up his accusation is that he’s a good student who managed to make prefect (both things which give him far more means and opportunity to be committing these crimes than a lot of the student body: the curfew and access exemptions for prefects alone should by all rights place them under greater suspicion if this world were capable of any reasonable investigation), and that Hagrid is keeping an unrelated animal incapable of attacking people in the manner people are being attacked locked inside a box somewhere in the castle. The most he should be able to hope for in the muggle world is that Hagrid gets charged with some kind of illegal pet trade: except for the fact that Riddle is placed in a higher position comparative to Hagrid by the likes of the Ministry, based on the even worse caste-like system applied to people of mixed magical species ancestry.

I like to think a confused and panicked and terrified Riddle had five minutes to come to terms with the sudden reality that he had finally murdered someone, figure out what to do about it, and settle on very nearly shitting himself while turning his back on the giant venomous snake he had to trust would obey him completely, conjure something like a ball of water so he could look at the reflection of the basilisk’s eyes as it disappeared back down the closing passageway (knowing a bit of water spilled on the bathroom floor would go completely undetected afterwards), and then lie there petrified and helpless waiting to be revived, because he made a mistake. I like to think of him being revived, finding out the Governors were debating whether to close the school—because on the one hand a girl is dead, but on the other hand the killer seems to have gotten spooked because the attacks have stopped—and scrambling to point the finger at Hagrid as an “eyewitness” quickly enough to clean up the mess he created, to save the home he put in jeopardy. Partly I want to see actual character progression beyond Voldemort was always an evil genius and Albus Dumbledore could Just Tell he was even at age 11 and instead get a glimpse of him (clumsily) learning how to use the levers of power available to him. Partly I just want this boy to experience a consequence, any consequence, for what he did.

Because of this. -> #I mean a poor girl gets murdered and then not even two generations later everyone's like?? forgotten she's existed?? #they just know her as a bathroom ghost and aren't even sad that there was a student murdered on hogwart's grounds???

There is not a single sentence devoted to Myrtle Warren in this series that doesn’t make me incandescently angry on her behalf.

Once again thinking about sapphic Harmione, this time with specifically lesbian Hermione

While I know a lot of people like to hc Harry as having freak outs about his gender and/or sexuality because of the Dursleys and him being distraught over this being another way he’s a “freak”, I like to go the other way with it

I like to hc in every version of Harry that because he was treated so differently and he didn’t know why that he eventually figured out his placing on the rainbow and maybe even thought that that’s specifically why the Dursleys hated him so much, and also because he’s so used to being hated and stuff that he just lets it roll off his back, no internalized homophobia here

And so going into this specific scenario, we got bisexual fem!Harry (cis or trans, but if it’s trans then she socially started transitioning in or prior to first year so that she’s seen as a girl the whole time she’s known Hermione) who’s v open about liking both

For Hermione, while I don’t see her as having any internalized homophobia either, I do think she’d unknowingly have a very heteronormative mindset, and in this scenario she has started crushing hard on Harry from the first moment they met and just has no idea

Spends the entirety of their hogwarts years being like “It’s so great Harry likes girls :) I wish I liked girls too”, “It’d be so amazing if me and Harry could get married, we’re so compatible, but I’m gonna have to marry a boy”, just constantly thinking about dating boys as a chore, thinks she’s just being a v studious student by not getting all boy crazy like the other girls, jealous and possessive over Harry and thinking it’s just because she wants to be her bestest friend, just the quintessential lesbian who doesn’t know they are one experience

And then when Hermione finally realizes she’s in love with Harry they get together and everyone’s happy 🎊

Apologies to Harry but I wish there were more fics of wizarding society at whole being way more unhinged about him

I’m talking things like he gets a minor cold and everyone collectively loses their mind, starts acting like he’s on death’s door, send him care packages and home remedies in droves

Or like during Voldemort’s return, a majority of death eaters actually not wanting to hurt Harry at all because he’s been their beloved public figure since he was a baby

Also I’m surprised I haven’t really seen any fics where Harry unknowingly keeps starting trends because everyone’s a bit obsessed with him

Favorite Sirry scenario that I haven’t seen anywhere yet is a time travel one where Harry decides to hang out with his mom (because honestly he’s heard a lot about his dad, but not really about his mom, and he’d like to know more about her)

But hanging around her means hanging around Snape too

Which means that now, Sirius hates Snape even more, cause he’d already quickly gained a crush on this new mysterious transfer student

And it’s just Sirius and James glaring over at their little trio and talking about Snape as if he’s some evil casanova stealing away all the cute gryffindors, while Snape is just. like. sitting there.

Considering that Harry had to like. do most of the shit to upkeep the Dursely household and he had to mature at a faster rate because while Dudley could do whatever tf he wanted, Harry had to be extremely careful of how he acted to avoid punishment (which he still couldn’t avoid because they wanted to punish), and then got to hogwarts to have to deal with all that fuckery, and having to be everyone’s savior, I gotta be honest, I don’t like fics where Harry raises Teddy and/or has kids super young, just kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth, he should be getting a chance where there’s no one depending on him

Surprised I haven’t really seen any fics of people using Harry to catfish others, making it difficult for him

Like even if it’s not an au where hogwarts students get phones, I could picture people sending “anonymous” letters to their crushes, but rather than actually being truly anonymous, they pretend they’re Harry Potter sending the messages, because they’re hoping his name will open the door, but after a bit of communication they’ll fall in love with the letter writer, and won’t be upset when they reveal their actual identity (never actually happens that way, nobody likes being catfished)

Which makes it so Harry can only ever send notes in person or through his well known owl, also there’s situations of poor people throwing themselves at him because they think they’re dating and he has no idea wtf they’re talking about

I like to imagine that after Hermione masters taking care of her curly hair, she goes after Harry to help him with his hair because she won’t accept “Potter hair is magically untamable” but it is. There is nothing she can do, it will always be a bird’s nest

Despite her frustration, it’s still a fun bonding experience for the both of them

I don’t know if I’m just accidentally filtering them out because I’m picky and take advantage of ao3’s filtering system (but I also felt like I didn’t really see this type of fic on fanfiction.net back in the day?) or if this type of fic weirdly isn’t popular

But I’m surprised I haven’t really come across a plethora of fics, magical or non-magical, where Sirius as an auror/detective trying to avenge James and Lily, raises Harry to be a mini-detective, and it’s like a huge part of the plot or the set up to it

Usually I see fics where it’s either background stuff of Sirius being an auror/detective searching for Voldemort or Peter and he doesn’t have custody of Harry, or it’s background he has custody but he’s neglectful and it’s his neglect that sets everything up

Where what I’m really craving is what my brain vaguely thinks of as “teenage girl detective stories” where Sirius is a somewhat to very present guardian to Harry/Harriet, if a bit too protective, who teaches him everything about being an auror/detective, and then maybe something happens to Sirius in his solo investigation on what happened to James and Lily where Harry has to go find him, or Harry just uses those skills for various mysteries in a Nancy Drew kinda way

Thinking about Sirius raising Harry/Harriet but rn specifically I’m thinking about Kreacher’s role in it, and I’m just picturing Kreacher convincing tiny little Harry to play “prince(ss) training” and it’s actually just heir(ess) training that Kreacher knows Sirius doesn’t want Harry to worry about, and it takes Harry awhile to connect those dots

For familial “Sirius raises Harry, possibly after only staying a year in Azkaban before getting a trial so there’s still some trauma for Harry and added angst for Sirius”, I need Harry to be given the mirror way earlier than in canon, and like a toddler with phone access, he’ll call up Sirius every chance he can to babble at him and Sirius answers the mirror each time so siriusly seriously

I genuinely love harmione, but in a sapphic, Hermione as a top struggling with heteronormativity, Harry as a short bottom getting flustered when Hermione hugs her for 2 different reasons, Hermione getting jealous when other people hug Harry and not knowing why, Harry knowing she has a crush on Hermione but thinks she doesn’t have a chance because Hermione’s “straight” and everyone always talks about how they’re convinced Hermione and Ron are going to get together, kind of way

Which doesn’t really exist outside my head, so I don’t really read Harmione fics
