I've said it before, I'll say it again - in Extinction 8.6, Taylor's own paranoia is doing the heavy lifting there. Amy's not being ideal, but she's a burned out overworked teenager that just lost two family members and her dad is braindead and she's dealing with a girl who a month ago held a knife to her throat.

Honestly, the fact that the Protectorate came to give her shit about the whole thing (as revealed in Arc 13) feels entirely unreasonable, as what Amy actually said and did wasn't that big a deal. She mostly just refused to answer questions and said some stupidly ominious things. The real issue was them handcuffing her and no one talking to her about why Legend wanted to come see her. Take those out, and Amy's poor bedside manner doesn't matter at all.

It’s entirely the handcuffs. If you handcuff someone, then them trying to escape the handcuffs is the rational reaction. Amy didn’t HELP, and Taylor’s paranoia didn’t help, but “any supervillain injured defending the city is handcuffed to their hospital bed” is a system designed to provoke bad behavior.

They didn't used to know how to cut corners. They basically had to sculpt stuff frame-by-frame like the digital version of claymation back then, now they just snag a model and skeleton out of the archive, halfass tweak it into a different shape, have someone in the art department do a pass over the textures (probably half an hour of touching up an AI generated texture map these days), download someone else's motion data off the internet and call it a day.

Oh yeah and the lighting's shittier because they used to have to take a ton of readings in every shot filmed on location and then meticulously match the lighting to the model by hand, but now since the entire film's shot on greenscreen anyway they just stick a light source in the generation program and boom done.

You know, it's funny how "executive meddling" used to be considered the greatest evil in entertainment production. Everyone took it for granted that suits sitting around a table backseating the creative types was the biggest hindrance there was to producing great shows and movies.

Except now that the industry has basically become just one big money laundering scam, we see what happens when the executives don't meddle. Because they don't give a shit, they make/protect their money whether something succeeds or fails. So they're just letting writers and directors and producers do whatever the fuck they want, essentially full creative freedom, and it's resulted in the worst era of entertainment we've ever had.

The thing no one with high-minded ideals about Art™ wants to admit is that sometimes the vast majority of creative types need someone to tell them "No".

Back before he was elevated to sainthood in comparison to everyone hating on Disney instead, George Lucas was widely considered to have made the worst Star Wars stuff precisely when he got too big for anyone to tell him "no". He had people he worked with on the original trilogy that occasionally reined him in, but by the prequels he was too big and too rich and too fully in charge for anyone to tell him anything but "That's brilliant, Mr. Lucas! You're a genius, Mr. Lucas! Please don't blacklist me from the industry if I say a flamboyantly gay hutt and fart jokes are a bad idea, Mr. Lucas!"

There often needs to be someone to say "Whoa" when the rampant self-indulgence and 'wouldn't this be cool?!' of creative types starts getting out of hand. If nothing else, to say "Okay, if you wanna do it, fine, but you pay for it because we're not", which suddenly reintroduces an element of reality to the creative type's process.

But now that budgets are basically unlimited, the studio doesn't give a shit how the product performs, and if the audience is ever even thought about it's only with disdain, well.

So many stories have the hero's origin story based in the villain's cruelty, but in virtually every one of those stories the villain winds up treating his actions as significantly as the hero saw them. He remembers exactly when he burned the hero's village, he remembers the moment he killed the hero's parents, he remembers everything he said to them when he did, and is eager to gloatingly recall it with crystal clarity just like the hero has spent all the time since then remembering it.

And here in this lame-ass Van Damme vehicle video game movie you have a villain who completely subverts all that. You've spent your whole life desperately hoping to challenge him for what he did, and in some way you've always assumed it was as important to him as it was to you. That he would be as eager to recount everything as you were, dwelling in that day again as you fought to the death.

But he just doesn't fucking remember. Because you were just one of dozens, if not hundreds, of villages he burned to the ground. You were just one of the numerous orphans he created. There's probably at least a dozen more like you lined up waiting their turn for this showdown. You just happen to be actually in front of him now, essentially demanding his attention, his reciprocation, that he feel as deeply about his actions as you did, because he defined your whole life and that has to mean something.

But nope. You aren't meaningful to him. You aren't special. He doesn't care about you like you care about him, even if that caring is hate.

Bison basically destroyed Chun-Li's life for the second time in that scene and it's kind of fucking amazing.

certainly there are specific groups within feminism that want liberation for everyone. he sees those groups as failing to influence the whole movement that calls itself feminism, which he sees as succeeding in making things worse for men even in cases it doesn't make things better for women at all, and opposes the whole movement therefore.

you have to read between the lines but all of her work on prison abolitionism is about not treating men as disposable or women as precious and delicate. Are Prisons Obsolete recommends a system which does not treat men and women who fail to toe their assigned lines as failed people unfit for society.

“We seek to build movements that not only end violence, but that create a society based on radical freedom, mutual accountability, and passionate reciprocity. In this society, safety and security will not be premised on violence or the threat of violence; it will be based on a collective commitment to guaranteeing the survival and care of all peoples.”

Willing to bet neither you nor Angela Davis have ever read "Inside the Criminal Mind" by Stanton E. Samenow (all three editions of it).

Also willing to bet neither you nor Angela Davis have ever knowingly met the types of career criminals that Samenow describes in his book and think they're some sort of "mythical unicorn" that are wildly exaggerated in fiction like Silence of the Lambs (which is actually far more on point than anyone wants to believe).

If your idea of the prison system and how "obsolete" it is relies on the idea that "all / most people who perform criminal acts are just Good People who weren't given enough Good Chances", then your idea of how to reform it is also inherently obsolete and makes you a criminal enabler, not a humanitarian.

Prison systems and criminal psychologists tried the "just provide them opportunities and the benefit of the doubt to rehabilitate them" route for decades, while never really addressing the underlying cause of repeat offenders (that there is some sort of biological and physiological component in their brain development where they get some sort of inherent reward out of criminal actions regardless of available opportunities, or lackthereof).

Samenow addresses this QUITE clearly, no "read between the lines" needed, in the fact that criminal activity is much higher on average in people who come from "privileged backgrounds" than people who are disadvantaged.

He also clearly addresses how people from the same exact families such as siblings with the same advantages/disparities turn out completely different in how willing they are to take illegal action because of how differently such people are wired on a deeper level than the influences of their external environment (nature vs nurture).

Yours and Angela Davis' idea of how to "end violence" by getting rid of prisons and singing Kumbaya is inherently flawed from the jump because you erroneously assume people who commit repeat violence and illegal activity are "Just Like You, If Only Someone Would Care More About Them".
