Marianne had step on several feet and talked about her cats to three different suitors who ended their dances early to her embarassment. Perhap what Lady S had said about her had finally reached everyone in town or more than likely, she just wasn’t good for at this. Marianne was happy and relieved when her brother appeared next to her. “It’s not what I expected if I’m honest. I don’t think I’m making a goof first impression but that only means things can only go up from here.” She said,hopefully.

“As much as I would love to go home right this very second, it might not look good if we leave too early. What would Lady S say? She’s scarier than anyone here tonight.”

He tried to offer a reassuring smile, but his features settled in a somewhat uncomfortable grimace. He was not thrilled that Marianne was taking part in the season. Even if it was his duty to secure her a match, Hugh was protective of his siblings and dreaded making the wrong choice and trapping them in horrible marriages.

“I am sure you are making a lovely impression on people, just ignore the ones who have the discourtesy to seem uninterested.” It was a strange position to be in as Hugh was caught between not wanting to marry his sister off at all but also wanting her to get the attention she deserved. Other young women already had flocks of suitors following them around and it irritated Hugh that his sister might be considered less worthy than them. “I will not have my life controlled by someone who hides behind their scandal sheet.”

While Luna was no stranger to horses, a horse rearing up near oneself puts them in a different kind of fear. With everyone moving about, who knew what had caused such a reaction! On the bright side, it had cleared her mind of all thoughts, including those pesky intrusive ones. On the flip side, she couldn’t count the number of people staring at them on one hand.

While the horse seemed to be calmer, Luna didn’t dare get close. “In such a time as this, it is not your fault.” That question, in a time like this, would have made her laugh. Of course, she had been frightened! Who wouldn’t be? “I am sure he didn’t mean to cause any harm or scare. Just scared, himself.”

“Yes, he honestly wouldn’t hurt a fly.” He patted the horse’s neck, quietly speaking words of comfort that seemed to soothe the unruly beast. Hamish was like a member of the family to him but with his size and strength, he might look terrifying to someone who didn’t know him.  Horses were powerful animals after all, and they did spook easily but Hamish was a tender soul even if he did look frightening.

“I am sorry though, I didn’t mean to interrupt your walk with this big brute.” He dismounted so that he was able to make his apologies at eye level, and Hamish had calmed down enough now to be distracted eating the grass. “I am Hugh Churchill, by the way.”

Seeing all of the guests laughing and twirling around the dancefloor reminded Hugh of his first season. He hadn’t had much of a chance to experience it before the passing of his father and the heavy burden of taking charge of an entire family fell onto him. Since then he had been so busy with the family’s affairs that he just didn’t have the time and now he was only here for the sake of his siblings, sitting on the side of the dancefloor and watching them have a good time. “It must be fun to be so carefree.” He said to the woman sat close by as he took a sip from his glass.

So it was the first ball of the season. How quickly it had rolled around and now Hugh had to contend with weeding out the well-intentioned suitors from the ill-intentioned ones ursuing his siblings. He never thought he would be thankful for the gossip tabloid from Lady S, but it would certainly come in useful in catching any suitors caught in lies. He was worried about his sister joining the season this ear but was trying his best to be supportive even though he would have preferred to keep her safe at home.

“Marianne,” He strolled up next to her, keeping one cautious eye on the crowded room. “How are you finding it so far? Remember we can always leave early.”

“Yes, there is a certain level of desperation sometimes,” Elinor said with a small nod. She had found her husband so swiftly after her societal debut, having known him before it, that she had never worried about herself with people like that. Also helped by her own status anyway, there was nothing to gain by swindling her. “Hugh do not put yourself at such a disservice. You would be a fine match if you only let people in,”

“I think I am far past being desirable to the young ladies in the season these days. They want a bright eyed person their own age, not someone like me. I might as well be a grandfather.” Besides, Hugh had heard the whispers about him, people questioning why he hadn’t married yet. There was more than one answer, and none of them straightforward. “By all means, try to find someone who might consider me a fine match if you want to truly challenge yourself.” He chuckled.

she is not paying any attention to her path as she wanders the park, her mind is instead focused on nitpicking and analysing the chosen garments of the other ladies out for their walk today. promenading was an art form, yet some ladies were more than a little lacking in terms of taste. she’s gawking at a particularly obnoxious flamingo pink dress sported by lady henderson when the horse crosses her path, and a little gasp escapes her lips. 

“ oh not at all! in fact, i fear it might be me who spooked him! ” she reaches a cautious hand out, holding it beneath the horse’s nose to let him smell her, to let him know she is not a threat. “ he’s beautiful, does he have a name? i was hoping to make it to the stables myself today, after i’ve fulfilled my promenading duties. ”a love of riding, of horses, has been prominent in her life for as long as she could remember. from the moment she laid eyes on a horse, to her first pony, to the first time she galloped bareback through the fields of their old home. “ such fascinating creatures. what a strange life it is to be so wild and free and yet… so often under the control of another ”

Evidently she was someone familiar with horses as she knew to straight away to allow Hamish to get her scent, to learn that she was not threatening and recognise her from then on. “This is Hamish.” Hugh ruffled the horse’s mane affectionately which earned him a soft snort of approval from his steed, who had calmed down considerably. “I’ve had him for years. One might say he’s my best friend, if that doesn’t strike you as utterly pathetic.” He chuckled and made a quick dismount. Hugh didn’t want to sit astride his horse when in conversation with someone on foot, it felt too much like talking down to them.

Clasping the horse by the reigns, Hugh stood by his side and absentmindedly stroked its soft neck, the texture like velvet underneath his fingertips. “People can be a bit intimidated by Hamish as he looks so big and brutish, but he’s a soft-hearted old thing.” Not unlike himself, although Hugh declined to mention that. “I suppose we are all under the control of something or someone really, are we not?”

“Oh come no Hugh, your siblings are far more observant than you give them credit for I’m sure they’d notice anything untoward,” Elinor gently teased giving a small shrug at his question. “I don’t know, there’s just something going on I can tell. Hopefully I’ll be proven wrong,”

“They are, but you and I know how treacherous people can be, especially at this time of year.” Someone apparently perfect could charm their way into an advantageous match and once papers were signed and all was legal, they could turn into horrific monsters. Hugh had seen plenty of people believing they had found a love match only to become trapped into a marriage with no escape. “Well I shall certainly keep my eye on things. At least I will be able to observe the marriage market with no eyes cast my way, that is usually where the scandals strike.” He chuckled and shifted his paper to one side. “That is the advantage of not being a good match for anyone - people will only pay me attention if they are intrigued by my siblings.”

Weston Park was certainly the place to be seen during the season and thus Hugh always made a point to visit. He was intrigued to see who was out in society and who wasn’t, and the park made for a pleasant ride on horseback. It was one of the few occasions where Hugh did not have to worry about money, although the thought had crept into his head that if he could not turn things around then he might have to sell his beloved horse. But that time was not upon him just yet.

Hamish was a little out of sorts today, perhaps due to the park being more crowded than normal. He knew he should have waited for a quieter period, and Hamish suddenly reared up and let out a loud whinny that called far too much attention to them for Hugh’s liking. “Whoa boy, easy there.” He gave the horse a reassuring pat on the neck to calm him before looking down at the person who might have been fearing for their life. “I must apologise. Something must have spooked him as he is not usually so skittish. He didn’t frighten you, did he?”

“You know I do suspect there will be a lot of trouble this year,” It was usually her husband’s job to be the optimist, as people began to return to London for the season or simply get ready for it Elinor often found herself nervous for what may happen. The rumours of someone telling secrets certainly wasn’t helping. “What do you hope to gain this season then?”

Hugh peered over the top of his newspaper when Elinor spoke, and swiftly folded it in half to be placed neatly on the table. He was hardly going to continue reading if Elinor was speaking, especially if it was about her suspicions for the season. “Oh? What trouble did you have in mind? Your predictions for the season are always most entertaining.” He beamed with his usual cheerful grin. “The same thing as every season - keeping my siblings safe from any daring social climber with ill intentions.”

BACKGROUND:

Hugh has always been known as one of the kindest and sweetest souls one could ever hope to meet. Even as a child, he always put the happiness of others above his own and has looked after his siblings as carefully as a mother hen might look after her chicks.

The Churchill siblings have always gotten along well, and Hugh wouldn’t be without them for the world. Even in the hardships they face, the family sticks together.

HUGH:

Upon the death of their father, Hugh stepped up as man of the house and was determined to care for the family as their father had always done. However, he did not realise quite how much of a mess his father had left behind.

In trying to organise his father’s affairs, Hugh discovered debts worth an absolute fortune. As a man of his word, he intended to make good on every single one of them and swore that he would see them all paid off and the family’s reputation restored. However, this has proved far more difficult than he initially thought.

Hugh is doing his best to look after his family, but the strain of trying to pay off all the debts as well as keeping enough money aside to keep the family afloat is sending him into despair. He tries to keep a cheerful face on so that his family won’t worry, but he doesn’t know how well he is convincing them.

He knows that he should really be married with children by now, but just hasn’t been able to find the time to pursue a match. Not to mention the guilt and fear he feels that soon he might not have the funds to support his own family, let alone a wife and children of his own.

Even though he is known as a truly kind soul by many, few would suspect the charismatic man’s own shyness and self-doubt. Although time and money issues are the main reasons he hasn’t considered the marriage market, Hugh also lacks the confidence he feels is necessary. He can put on a good show of confidence when needed, but he does not consider himself to be a good match for anyone and would rather focus his attentions on making sure his siblings are happy and cared for.

Despite the hardship, Hugh tries his best to remain pleasant and kind to all he meets. He tries his best to be a good man, but perhaps the strain of trying to look after everyone else instead of himself is starting to wear away at him.
