If Daphne had to pick a favorite meal, it would easily be breakfast. And everyone knew the best place for breakfast food was a diner. Which is why she and Dani were sitting in a booth at the Skyline Diner that Saturday morning. Daphne was currently in the process of cutting up the small pancake she had ordered her daughter, when her daughter knocked the child-sized fork she’d been given off the table and onto the floor. With a sigh, Daphne stood up out of the booth to pick it up. As she did so, she caught the eyes of another diner patron. Giving him a small, tired smile she said “They need to make silverware you can strap to their wrists. Like when Nintendo made the Wii strap so people would stop accidentally throwing their remotes through their TVs.”

Hugo waved excitedly when his eyes fell on Daphne and Dani and immediately walked towards them. Dani, was after all one of his favourite kids to babysit even though he always claimed he had no favourites. He chuckled at what the other said, the number of times he had seen Dani do that, she really did need something like that. “You know, that is a cool idea, maybe even a shark tank worthy one.” he grinned widely before he leaned down a little to talk to the kid. “Hi Dani, having fun with the food?” he chuckled before he went back to talking to Daphne. “She is always so cute, even when shes throwing cutlery around.”

BIOGRAPHY trigger warnings: car accident, death

Hugo was born and raised in Seattle. He had a simple and very happy childhood. His parents were the kindest souls and they made sure that Hugo as well as his sister knew that they were loved and cared for, the kids both growing up just as kind and generous as their parents. Apart from having to face some bullies at school and being quite mediocre when it came to studies, there wasn’t much for Hugo to complain. He was one of those people who saw the light even in the darkest of times. That was of course, easy to do when he had little to worry, but Hugo did his very best to keep that up even when the darkest times did come.

Four years ago, when his sister was away at college, Hugo and his parents were in a car crash. Driving back from what had been a dinner out and a pleasant evening, the Mendoza parents would not have expected that day to be their last but it unfortunately was. Hugo too was hurt in the accident, and hospitalized, but he managed to survive. He woke up to find that his parents were dead and his sister had returned, taking care of their funeral and holding it together to the best of her ability. Perhaps he could have coped better if his sister was supportive but by the time Hugo woke, her grief had turned into anger towards her brother, blaming him for driving them to their deaths and that was the last he had seen of her.

It took Hugo everything to get back on his feet. At that point, he had lost his entire family, his parents dead and his sister vowing never to see him again. He spent months even after he was physically alright, trying to get back to his normal life without much success spending almost all his time cooped up at home with his cats. It took him lot of therapy and lot of his friends to help him get back to his life. Once he had managed that though, Hugo never looked back, turning his focus to his café and his volunteer work at the animal hospital. He hasn’t still seen his sister since but he hopes that will come back some day and meanwhile went back to being the kind and generous son his parents always wanted him to be despite how lonely he was since the night he had lost his entire family.
