I am a sound improvisor, experimental vocalist, also an experiential arts therapist. Born in Changhua, based in Tainan, Taiwan.

An exploratory concert series and festival that supports people with disabilities, and invite also underage performers.

Alice Hui-Sheng Chang’s piercingly provocative vocal stylings are probably well-known to long-standing Melbournian improv aficionados, and now she’s back in town from Taiwan with a very special little collaborator. Esme has been studying with Alice for at least five and a half years – her entire life thus far – and was no doubt absorbing textural complexities even before then, as she toured Japan, Korea and Singapore in utero. Their duo is the maternal bond made manifest – an audial amalgamation of carings, questionings, caperings, contradictions and cacophonies.

In this collective experience of the visual, the sensual and the sensible, we consider what plants know, and catch a glimpse of a world where time is transformed, and humans displaced. Blending dance, experimental music, and installation, Hundreds + Thousands is an opera that attempts to reconcile the relationship between people and the natural world.

Over the pandemic, we came across numerous people who have developed deeply personal relationships with plants. Plants became our meditative companions even as we ourselves lived like potted plants during lockdown. As we were forced to slow down, some of us began to pay attention to minute shifts in light and air qualities in our apartments, changes in our bodily and thought patterns, new buds sprouting and old leaves withering.

In Hundreds + Thousands, we ask ourselves how we might be able to displace ourselves to catch a glimpse of the other. As this is a performance for people and plants, with people and plants, we wonder what kind of language is needed for us to listen, to see and to speak to/with plants.

For us, the title “Hundreds and Thousands” is a reminder of the overabundance of things that exist (in nature or man-made), the vastness of infinity, the great history of the earth and the universe in which humans are but a blip. What if we can ‘see’ together the times and spaces before the human epoch, or long after humans exist?

Album Review - I Smile When the Sound Is Singing Through the Space (duo w/ Jason Kahn)

As a longtime admirer of Jason Kahn’s work, I Smile When the Sound Is Singing Through the Space left my jaw on the floor. Tawainese vocalist Alice Hui-Sheng Chang and Kahn have worked together since 2015, and this cathartic exposition was recorded during a 2023 residency at Ting Shuo Hear Say in Tainan, Taiwan. Clairvoyance takes shape in the extended techniques and guttural washes. Voices quiet and explode, running through frequencies like a twisting monsoon flood across parched earth. Each turn leaves me further captivated. The timbres of each voice simultaneously complement and spoil the other, building an uncertain tension between various diverging expressions. It’s a wild, enthralling ride. At points it’s like Kahn is fading into nothingness, his voice broken and scattered as Chang melodiously twitters and dances in the dust left behind. It’s rife with drama and release. Fans of Tazartès and Charmaine Lee take note. Highest recommendation.

講座 - 從聲音創作實驗：人聲的療癒性與集體感｜張惠笙

2022臺南國際人權藝術節

這是一場重新認識與體驗「聲音」的表演講座。講師張惠笙，是一位聲音藝術家與藝術治療師，也是聲音組織「聽說」的共同創辦人，現長駐臺南。她的實踐以不同面向交織而成，側重於社群連結、同在感，以及非言語交流的各種可能。作為音樂家，她以演出作為對特定場域的回應，靈活運用不同的音色和肌理，放大空間本身的聲響質地，同時回應現場的社群狀態。此外，長期透過工作坊，運用人聲去開發各年齡層與不同障礙者的出聲；運用純粹的聲音，無語言也無音調，探索個人解放與自由之療癒性。多種表演合作也運用身體感知體現（embodiment）探索更廣的環境議題，重思人與萬物的共存共生。此次演出講座，將帶大家一起表演集體感知詩譜《藻礁娘親》，回應大潭藻礁議題。

水源，是聚集人的地方！ 《H2O》是寶寶與成人們，想像的海洋！ 將從「水世界」中的未知，帶領大家一起探究「水」的三態與孕育出的神秘領域。 時而翻滾、時而爬行，一片海平面，水下與水上輕輕交融，親密的舞台空間、柔和的視覺光線、舒適的地板材質，讓寶寶自由探索與移動，也讓陪伴前來的成人們，徜徉其中。

本作品首演於2019年，至今已在台灣四個城市演出達40餘場～
