In the end, I believe Connor took second, and Mike and I finished more towards the middle. Mike signed my outlaw, and that disc got retired right then. It's a great reminder of a great day and a great place with great people. Thanks, guys, for everything!

Did I mention these photos were taken in December? Anyone wanna move to SoCal?
The yellow first-run outlaw you see pictured here was and is my favorite new disc. I bought it in Texas a couple of weeks earlier, and it immediately became my new distance driver. I throw a thoroughly mixed bag, and that is a competitive slot.
I also learned that Legacy players throw mixed bags. Note Connor's putter. It's not Legacy. It's also not a putter.
I love the Outlaw, I've seen LOYAL Legacy fiends on Facebook, and I'm a huge Murder Mike fan, but other than that, I didn't know a whole lot about Legacy before this trip. I guess I still don't, but I will say this; this corner of the country feels like it BELONGS to Legacy and Innova, in the same way that Dallas feels like it belongs to Trilogy. Perhaps it's just the people I've met, but you can really feel the work done by these manufacturers to get their message out, and to really contribute to the scene.
I actually met Murder Mike changing basket positions at Waller for this tournament. That's a lot of work for 20+ holes. He grew up in that park with his ENORMOUS family. I swear that playing here with him felt like he was a PART of the course, and that if you cut him, he would bleed Legacy plastic. Murder Mike has clearly found a home with the Legacy family, and that's a pretty special thing to see.
I spent a couple of weeks in Santa Barbara recently for a shoot, and, as always, I brought my bag with to get some rounds in while I was there.
I'm a busy small business owner with two kids living in rainy Portland. I play a lot of disc golf, but my rounds are usually hurried, wet, and often spent working on the phone as I play.
I played a lot of pool in college. I'm not a guy who mingles with grace. I learned at a young age that if you can play pool, you can walk into almost any bar and have common ground with the locals.
Disc Golf is the same, but doesn't require me to spend time in bars. Instead, it requires me to go for long walks in beautiful parks.
To the guys in these photos, it was just another monthly round at their home courses. To me, it was a respite from the head trip of a very stressful gig; a full day away from the kids and the phone to enjoy my game without distraction; a chance to feel welcome in somebody else's brotherhood; a chance to compete in my first singles tournament, ever; a chance to play one of the best courses I've enjoyed to date (Waller Park); and a chance to golf in shorts and sunglasses in December.
Special thanks to Murder Mike, Connor Hanrahan, and Pat for showing me a great time, welcoming me along for the rounds, and for sharing a very special day with me.
This is precisely the best benefit to come from the photography and networking I've done in disc golf; I can usually hook in to the best rounds in town on any given day, in any given place.
This young man's only Christmas wish was to go to the Huk Lab shop, and play the course where McBeth won worlds. His parents drove him down from Seattle for this. They'll have to hit up Blue Lake next trip, but they made it to the shop and to Pier. I'm telling you...watch out for this guy in the future. -stu

And here's where the story ends. Paul misses the putt. Will is not about to play another hole, and sinks his.
Will is happy. Paul is not, but after Will has had a chance to celebrate, Paul comes over to congratulate him. It doesn't take much to see through the forced smile on Paul's face. He's crushed, and I don't blame him. It was a brutal 2nd for him.
And the last pic of the tournament may be the most fun. That's an adoring young fan right there!!!!
In the end, everything comes back to Hole 1, and in fact, it comes down to this drive, pretty much.
The mood was pretty much what you see here in Nikko and Jerm's faces. Disbelief. Nobody could believe that Will had missed a couple of putts. Nobody could believe that Paul couldn't make him pay for it. Nobody could believe that Johne hadn't already walked away with a win. It was a great mix of excitement, disappointment, anxiety, and anticipation.
Paul took a run at the ace here, at least to my memory. I didn't have a great look, but it couldn't have been far off based on his lie.
So, there's a playoff. First hole is back to 18. Johne is in disbelief.
Johne skipped into the basket on hole 5 from what...200 feet? I was standing very near the basket when it happened. "Who was that?" I thought to myself. Up ran Johne. He continued to absolutely rain incredible shots onto the course, including another incredible 80-90 footer through the bamboo on 7. Suddenly, Johne was in the race.
Walking down the road to 17, he was more than in the race. He was in the lead by 4 strokes. This was a man who was ready to take home the title.
He was walking with Don Smith, both of them elated. Disc Golf Guy was filming. The crowd was in front of him, beside him, behind him, and excited for him.
I heard him say something close to "I've just gotta hold it together for two more holes and I win. That's all I have to do. I can't believe this."
Johne was on cloud 9. Maybe 10. Actually I think he had turned it up to 11.
The tears you see in his eyes in the photo above were tears of joy. He had this. He knew it.
But then, the wheels came off.
NOW...I played hole 17 on spectator appreciation day. I threw a 15. It's the most deceptively simple hole I've ever played. You just have to get it down the hill and inbounds, inside the hay bales, and take your 3. Maybe a four, maybe, but realistically, if you make your drive, you're gonna pretty much be OK. There's a small layup zone that you can play to that buys you 30-40 feet forward of the tee pad. I threw 5-6 of my shots from there, and it wasn't really any easier.
Johne couldn't get it inbounds off of the tee. With every passing throw, you could see the pain coming. "I still love you Lord," he said. "You saved my life. Thank you for everything you've given me." He kissed the cross he wore around his neck.
Will put it inbounds on his first throw, had a good (if not slightly scary) approach shot, and made his putt.
After 18, there was a 3 way tie with Johne, Paul, and Will, all at -19. Whoa. Deja-vu for this photographer. I was at Worlds for the epic showdown between McBeth and Wysocki, and I knew how heated the competition was about to become.
But...let's just take a moment to recognize something here. After 4 rounds of play, on one of the most incredible courses in Disc Golf (if not the most incredible course,) THREE players scored exactly the same. Two guys in their twenties (???), and Johne. I don't know how old he is, but he's not in his twenties. Remarkable. Gave me hope, as a 39 year old guy, to still be able to play lights out golf. Also, it took away my excuses.
FINAL DAY STORY BEGINS HERE:
The day started with lots of wind. Scores were reasonably close, but somehow it seemed like McBeth would walk away with it. I will say this...I looked at Kyle Sawtelle early and said "With this wind, it's anybody's round." I didn't really believe it though.
The players all seemed calm and in control, but highly focused. Paul seemed slightly less confident than usual, but it was subtle. Will had the eye of the tiger. Patrick seemed to have people in his sight lines with every shot, but played calmly and easily. Johne quickly wound up on top of the world...
