[Event: Invasion] Aamir & August
Emergency field medicine was Aamir’s main focus at OpAscent, but unless he was assigned to accompany agents on a sub-op, there was really no work to be done there. Occasionally he was brought a recruit who’d managed to injure themselves in training (which was simply a joy), but for the most part, his days consisted of performing whatever medical tasks might need to be done. Today, that meant checking up on August’s prosthetics.
He didn’t mind it, honestly. August was a nice guy, and he always had something interesting to say. Today, it was about artificial optics. Aamir didn’t know much about the subject, but he was nothing if not a fast learner, and August was certainly good at explaining. It was a fairly fascinating subject, and between that and his attention on the connection between his patient’s artificial arm and his flesh shoulder, he hardly even noticed when the announcement began. It wasn’t until he saw August stiffen that he glanced up from the task at hand, just in time to hear the words forcible internal investigations.
Aamir nodded in understanding as August stood, waving a hand to indicate that he was finished. The check-ups were more of a precautionary thing to begin with, and Aamir tended to take far more time than was probably entirely necessary.
Moving over to one of his monitors, Aamir began preparing to receive injured parties. It was unlikely that anyone would be critically injured, but a little preparation couldn’t hurt. He was tapping the screen of the monitor when he heard a sort of shudder. Instinctively, his powers kicked in just in time for the monitor he’d been fiddling with to fall through him. Quickly, he stepped away from the machinery. He heard his name from across the medbay, and turned to see August on the floor.
It was almost a relief; with a patient to act as a distraction, Aamir could stop his heart’s racing and focus on something other than the lights coloring everything red. “I’m fine,” he said quickly, making his way to August. The medbay staff, while used to chaos, were obviously nervous, and he had to sidestep several frightened nurses in order to make it to where August lay by the door. “Are you all right?” He knelt next to the technician, moving to help him sit up.
Charlie had been in the mess hall when the announcement sounded. The sound of her Uncle’s firm voice sent a wave of panic over her and, as it cut off, an explosion sounded outside of the room. Luckily it was early enough that there weren’t many people around and only one recruit was injured. Unfortunately the recruit was pretty badly injured. There were a few other recruits around and they told Charlie they’d secure the mess hall while Charlie got the injured recruit down the hidden stairs from the back kitchens to just next to med bay. It took longer than she’d like and the recruit was barely coherent. She couldn’t find a single source of bleeding and the blast had pushed him back into a table full of silverware.
Finally, Charlie pushed open the doors (which should have been automatic) to the med bay. “Anyone here?” she called out, and almost immediately, she saw August being helped by Aamir. Shit. If the electronics had all gone out, it would have messed with August’s prosthetics.
“Aamir?” she called out, calling out until he came over to help with the recruit. Aamir was the one helping her most with her studies, her tests to become a proper doctor, and supervising her. And she knew she should be concerned with the recruit, her patient, but Gus was her best friend.
“He fell back into a table with silverware. There was an explosion in the mess hall,” she whispered to Aamir, trying to keep her hands from shaking too much, but as she left the recruit in Aamir’s care, she ran over to August and grabbed for his hands.
“Gus? Are you okay?” she asked and, before she’d even waited for an answer, she put her arms around his shoulders and tugged him in for a tight hug. She was scared. Terrified. But she needed to make sure her best friend was alright.
“Yes, yes, I’m fine,” August said hurriedly, trying to wave them both off--which he could only do with his left hand, because his prosthetics were just giant useless lumps of metal right now. “The, er, EMP fried the wiring, I’m afraid. I’d really rather you both see to that poor bloke that Charlie just bought in.”
Oh, dear. Well, this was just a giant pile of shit, wasn’t it?
Far off, a few floors up, he swore he could hear the faint pops of gunfire--or maybe it was just machinery going awry. Christ, he hoped it was the latter, but common sense said it was the former, if that missive from the Director was anything to go by.
Bracing his left hand on the floor, August tried to push himself into a more workable position, scowling to himself as he shoved a useless leg further in so that he could sit properly on the floor instead of prosthetics going everywhere. A quick glance at Charlie confirmed that she seemed to be okay--he was distantly amazed that she’d managed to make it here from the Mess Hall without encountering any of their invaders.
“Right. First things first,” August said, trying to sound cool and in control--he wasn’t sure if he managed it, “we need to get the power back online, and then security back too. I’m sure we’ve got old radios lying around somewhere that run on batteries, they’ll probably be in the server room for backup. Is that recruit able to be stabilized?”
