The industrial revolution began the destruction of fashion, then the invention of the marketing/advertising industry degraded it further, and now fast fashion is bringing the beauty of the ways we cloak our naked bodies to a very sad end… this is why I believe we must appreciate and preserve ALL antique AND vintage clothing, & why I focus on re-selling vintage & antique items.
I hope that those of us with the money to make a difference choose to vote with our dollars for reusing & for preserving QUALITY items of BEAUTY, whether grunge or royal in their style, rather than spend those dollars on helping an industry of “fast fashion” made up of items created with planned obsolescence in mind….
..... See the fascinating & frightening documentary “The True Cost” if you don’t already know why something like selling & buying vintage, & preserving the old over buying into the new, could mean so much to someone as it does too me.
My Etsy shop is: www.etsy.com/shop/HumanityRevival
I’ve just started making handmade items from some beautiful materials... the first handmade item that I am ready to offer at my shop is the card shown above...
... I also have stamps & ink paint pens so that I can gussy the cards up as much or as little as anyone requests. They are fun to make & making them help takes my mind off the massive piles of yet to be sorted thru that is waiting to be listed for sale. Doing some small handmade items helps as well with taking my mind off the crazy making difficulty of keeping the inventory that I & my fiance already have listed for sale & have to keep organized.
My fiance sells on Ebay which allows him to be self employed, & tho I know I COULD make more money & quicker sales if I also sold on ebay, I honestly cannot leave etsy because it is such a cooperative customer service focused community of kind& creative individuals... ebay & amazon etc., those platforms just all seem so COLD, & so far as corporations go they are both cold.
I personally just don’t know how to be a cold person. & I cannot imagine making money via a means which supports the profits of a corporation which is chartered to care for nothing more than just that; Profits.
I also don’t know how to take joy out of making cold sales to *mostly* cold customers, and getting only the cold reward of money.
On etsy the customers are *most* all very communicative and polite people. Plus I LOVE most of the items I list, & so I kind of like to know these beautiful things are being purchased by people who are going to take the time to let me know how much they too love the item they’ve purchased, so I can know that I am not JUST making money, but that I am also helping spread beauty :)
I love that Etsy is a certified B corporation, and so its corporate charter is one that includes they provide a social benefit to the communities & persons they work in & with, as well as having to meet decent standards of environmental responsibility & of treating their employees with respect.
If it were up to me EVERY corporation on the planet would have to be a certified b corporation or its equivalent in order to be granted a corporate charter by any of the worlds governments... but unfortunately greed does still run most of the business world & government, so the best I can do is to just know I am doing right by doing what small part I can now.
