“The skate scene at Rowan is starting to pop off now. I usually come here to the mini skatepark to hang out and ride around every day after classes. I do modeling and make my own music on the side, but skateboarding is always a hobby I’ve had. We pretty much all know each other at the skatepark now, because we spend so much time together.” - Tyshawn Dixon, Freshman Engineering major

“Our first date, we got bagels and came here to the Bunce green, and had lunch on this bench. Every once in a while we just come here to sit and talk for a little while. We had no idea that we lived 20 minutes away from each other back home in Dallas, TX. We actually met back home, right before transferring to Rowan. We’re both theater majors, and I was working in the costume shop back home for our last production, at the same time he was performing in his last show. “Most of my friends from Chi Alpha have hammocks and I invited them to come hammocking with me today on campus! The weather is finally nice enough where we can do that again. Sometimes we even stack them up on the trees, like a bunk bed! It sounds scary, but it’s so much fun and we can see so much on campus from our hammocks in the trees.” - Paige Ward, Junior Spanish major

“I came to the United States and took ESL in high school. I knew how to write in English when I entered college, but not at a higher level. Coming to college and writing was a struggle for me, but luckily I found really good professors who were understanding and willing to help and I am really thankful for them. I found The Whit, which allowed me to express my talent and passion. Through photography, I am able to tell the stories that I might not be able to communicate as well in writing. I let people tell their own story through the camera, and not everybody can do that.” - Miguel Martinez | RTF major, journalism minor

“There are not a lot of women who are pursuing my type of major, compared to men. I started as an engineering major, and then had an epiphany that physics was what I wanted to do. As a freshman in high school I bought a book by Stephen Hawking, The Grand Design, that really sparked my interest. I was always thinking about and talking about physics in high school, and as soon as I switched to this major everything clicked for me. I joined the Physics Club. I’m one of the only females, but everyone makes me feel included and I don’t feel like my gender is holding me back. Being in a STEM field, there are not a lot of women, but I feel confident and welcomed here to just do what I am good at.” - Marcella Mazzuca, Sophomore Physics major

“To me, being a first generation college student was having my parents migrate to the United States and seeing them work hard and make so many sacrifices to give me these opportunities. They left their dream behind so I could follow mine, and I’ve definitely felt supported my whole entire life. I feel resilient, I feel like this is something that I will always have with me, having the opportunity here to educate myself and end up impacting my community with whatever I do.” - Katherine Villacis, Junior Civil/Environmental Engineering major

“I know my combination of majors sounds a bit odd, but ultimately what I want to do with my studies is art therapy in a women’s prison. I took a corrections class last fall and was really inspired to take action against the injustice in the prison system in the United States. I believe there are a lot of flaws within the system, and I think it’s a practice that should have more good people involved. I would like to be part of that good and make a difference.” - Jennifer Hovell, Junior Law & Justice and Art double major

“My favorite place to be on campus is easily Playa Bowls. I was so hype when they finally opened up on campus, I went there almost every day of the week!” - Jelani James, Senior Journalism major

“I started playing the guitar when I was twelve years old. Because I didn’t have any proper lessons, it took me a long time to learn the basics, but from the start, I never learned by playing other people’s music. When I first started learning, I first started writing my own music to play. In the past year or so I’ve written at least two hours’ worth of songs, and it feels really good to be able to share that with other people now. I even had the opportunity to play in the Philadelphia Fringe festival, which is coming to Rowan in Pfleeger Hall in March, so it’s cool to see it all come full circle.” - Jayce Williams, Junior Music Industry major with a concentration in Business

“Willow Hall has become my home. I have a great group of friends here that really make it feel like I belong here. We’re always hanging out in the lounge or in one of our rooms. Sometimes we paint signs to hang in our rooms, or I play the guitar and we all jam out, but usually we just listen to music and just talk and goof around. After a long day, that’s really all you need.” - Hajah Carpenter, Freshman Biology major

“I remember the moment of deciding to come to Rowan was when I came to visit the sixth time after I received my acceptance letter. I wanted to make sure Rowan was the one since I was transferring from community college. There are so many opportunities here that other universities did not have and I felt that by choosing Rowan would help me for future opportunities. Due to so many challenges I have faced in the last year, which could have prevented me from being here, I am proud I kept pushing myself at times when I wanted to give up.” - Edris Forde, Junior RTF major

“During my undergrad years, I learned that college is the only time you can be 100% selfish. After graduation you have plenty of time to figure your life out and make time for other things. But while you’re in college, every choice you make is based on YOUR goals, YOUR passion, YOUR future. You’re allowed to say no to things that don’t make you happy or don’t relate to what you want to do in life. For the time being, I definitely recommend getting involved with everything that interests you, whether that’s joining clubs or networking or interning. There are so many opportunities here, it would be a waste not to go after them.” - Courtney Hopper, First-year grad student in the MBA program

“It’s easy to get too involved and drown in obligations, so don’t be afraid to say no if a certain opportunity is not what you are looking for. Stay focused on your end goal upon graduation. Watching your work directly affect and benefit others is a great feeling, and it’s something so particular to smaller companies and startups like the ones I am working with now.” - Brittany Eng, Junior PR/Advertising Major

“I remember eating at Holly Pointe cafe and seeing students wearing ambassador uniforms and thinking I would love to be one of them. I was a freshman ambassador at my high school, and I love it here at Rowan, so I wanted to tell as many people about it to make sure that they had the chance to experience life here and love it as much as I do. I’m also involved in SGA here on campus because I want to be making changes here on campus, and hopefully through the elections this year I can find a position in the board to really push for those developments.” - Arielle Gedeon, Sophomore RTF major

“When I came here as a freshman, they didn’t have everything on campus that they have now, like Rowan Blvd. It has been interesting to see how Rowan has built up as a community just in the past couple of years. We’re becoming a bigger school, so I appreciate that I am here for these transformative moments that will go down as part of Rowan’s history. I lived in Chestnut as a freshman, and now I live in Victoria, so just between the places I have lived on campus over the years you can see how much development and change has occurred here.” - Andrew Amisola, Junior Music Industry major

"I think that the best decision I have ever made was to change my career path. I was originally was majoring in chemical engineering because, all through high school, I was the smart girl. I graduated salutatorian, and I felt like that is what you do when graduate at the top of your class: you go into engineering, you make inventions that will change the world...But I have actually always wanted to be a teacher my entire life. So I got up one day, and I really thought about it and decided to change my major. So now I am working on my bachelors in chemistry and continuing on with a masters in STEM education."
