Nesta/Bryce/Aelin Maasverse Breadcrumbs
Bryce and Aelin are the primary FMCs, but Nesta has more in common with them than ACOTAR's primary FMC, Feyre. Nesta, Bryce, and Aelin are all snarky. They have a strong sense of justice for others. They are all party girls who love music, and dancing. Books are also important to their characters. And of course, fashion. All three care very much for their day-to-day style. This is a huge departure from Feyre, who prefers clothes that are more utilitarian and comfortable.
A Fallen Friend
Bryce loses Danika. Aelin loses Nehemia. Nesta loses Clare Beddor. The end of their friends' lives is the beginning of their journey.
Their Own Plans
One of the most significant aspects of Celaena/Aelin's character is that she doesn't share her plans after losing Sam. This is sometimes to her own detriment and at the cost of upsetting her most loyal friends. Bryce also doesn't share plans. A major plotline in HOSAB is solved through Bryce not sharing her plans with most of her friends. Nesta also goes rogue without sharing her plans. In ACOTAR, she left her family home to search for Feyre at the Wall. In ACOWAR, she has a plan to distract the King of Hybern that she doesn't fully explain. In ACOSF, Nesta knocks out Gwyn so that her friend would go along with her plan.
Partying & Alcohol as Coping
Celaena loves a good party. There is a party scene in Assassin's Blade where she meets masked Dorian and Chaol. She liked going out to drink, brawl, and gamble. Aelin learns to have better control of her relationship with alcohol. Before Danika's death, Bryce loved going out, casual sex, and getting wasted. She stopped drinking afterwards. During ACOFAS, Nesta visited taverns for music, drinking, hook-ups, and gambling. She stopped drinking when her family made her stay in the House of Wind.
Made
Nesta is Made into fae by the Cauldron. Bryce is Made into the horn when Danika tricks her into getting the horn tattooed onto her. Aelin was Made into the gate when she put keys into her arms in Kingdom of Ash.
World Walkers
Aelin, Bryce, and Nesta are marked with similar symbols.
Aelin's nameless mark is described as:
"a diamond, two arrows piercing its side, then a vertical line in its middle… “.
If the arrows are piercing all the way through the diamond, then that sounds like 8 points. The mark could be the same as the eight-pointed star on Bryce's chest, Nesta's back tattoo, and in the prison.
Of course, Aelin and Bryce have walked across worlds. Nesta has not yet. But there is a significance between Bryce and Nesta's meeting, when Bryce comes to Prythian.
A Tattooed Winged Warrior Mate
Cassian, Rowan, and Hunt. Cassian is an Illyrian, Rowan shape shifts into a hawk, and Hunt is an angel. Each one is a tattooed warrior who is very serious about his work. He is rugged and is not the kind of man who preens. The FMC's are trained by their winged mates. The relationship begins with them at each other's throats and ends with the MMC being her biggest defender. Behind closed doors, they challenge the FMC, but typically carry out her plans. They will not tolerate any criticism of their mate.
There is a reason that Bryce and Hunt met Nesta and Cassian. Both males had the same reaction when the starsword crossed into Prythian.
Side Note: For the fandom, these three MMCs are either beloved or hated. There seems to be little middle ground. I think that is because their personalities are the same. One of the biggest criticisms, is that Rowan and Hunt become boring after they get in a relationship. Most likely it's because they are golden retrievers. And yes, the bonus chapter of Cassian not being on Nesta's side doesn't seem to follow this pattern. Though I am weary of whose perspective the bonus chapter is written in. Ember Quinlan doesn't think positively of venir males, so she's not an objective viewer.
The Royal MMC
It is canon that Rhys and Ruhn look alike. Dorian's description is similar to theirs, so I'm going to assume that they are all reincarnations/parallels of each other. These two characters are intrinsically linked.
Aelin was romantically linked to Dorian but later they became friends. They are distant cousins in TOG. Throughout the series, they need to work together to stop the Valg. Aelin is slowed in her falling through worlds by Rhys.
Bryce and Ruhn are half-siblings who had a falling out. During HOEAB, they reconcile with each other. In HOSAB, he gives her the Starsword which leads her into Prythian. They work together to dismantle the fae hierarchy.
Nesta and Rhys dislike each other. Due to her treatment of Feyre and their family, Rhys does not like Nesta. Or at least they become civil after she saves the lives of Rhys, Feyre, and Nyx. However, knowing from HOFAS, Rhys' ancestry is linked to Bryce's. With Bryce being the fourth Made item from the Cauldron and Nesta being likely able to access Bryce, there may be a situation in which Rhys and Nesta have to work together.
The Other Female Predator
Feyre shares many similarities with Manon and Lidia. Their relationship to Nesta/Aelin/Bryce is also important to the entire story. There is a mutual respect between these two archetypal personalities.
Feyre and Nesta are at odds with each other during their poverty. Throughout the series, Feyre sees Nesta's love through action rather than her words. And Nesta really does love Feyre, even if she can't bring herself to "conform" to her sister's life. Nesta needed to make her own way.
Aelin and Manon don't trust each other in the beginning. The two women fight but Aelin let her go. Through EOS, they begin to trust each other. They learn that the Eye of Elena is also a witch symbol.
Before Bryce meets Lidia, she already admires her, despite Lidia working for the Asteri. Once it is clear that she is working for the resistance, Bryce trusts her.
The Friend Zoned Guy
Chaol, Ithan, and Azriel. He seems like a MMC but really he's a loyal friend.
Aelin is linked romantically to Chaol. When they fall out over Nehemia's death, their relationship is done even if both didn't realize it until later. Chaol remains angry with Aelin until he figures himself out in TOD.
Ithan and Bryce are best friends until Danika's death. Ithan had a not-so-secret crush on Bryce. Although Bryce seems to be oblivious of his crush. They don't speak for two years until the demon attacks at the end of HOEAB. After Ithan opens the doors to humans, him and Bryce remain trusted friends.
Azriel loved Mor for 500 years. Nesta finds Azriel attractive. Living in the House of Wind together, they become friends. Azriel defends her within the Inner Circle.
Elain, Elide, and Sathia all are similar in some ways. They are all expected to "sweet" but instead they are all tough as nails despite being less powerful.
Nesta and Elain as sisters were always close with Nesta being the protector. They worked in tandem to kill the King of Hybern. Elain and Nesta didn't speak because of Nesta's behavior and her own misled expectations of Elain's behavior.
Elide grew up with Aelin before Terresen fell. Lady Elide became one of the first subjects of Aelin's Terresen. Aelin sees her as someone to protect.
Sathia is Tristan Flynn's sister. She isn't as well liked as Elain or Elide. Yet, Bryce seems to like her. She calls Bryce out on not being positive about the fae. Sathia tells Bryce that she's hopeful for a queen who can dismantle the fae hierarchy.
More Maasverse Reincarnation/Parallel Universe Breadcrumbs
There are a lot of details around Feysand/Manorian/ DaybrightandNight that switch around in the three series
Lidia and Ruhn, two daemati, have mind sex. As do Feyre and Rhys. Obviously there is a parallel between of the nicknames of Agent Daybright and Agent Night and Feyre’s “Night Triumphant and Stars Eternal.”
Lidia has a son that looks like Feyre and Rhys’ son, Nyx
Dorian shapeshifts and has a bunch of other powers that Feyre has. He learns reading minds and mind control from Maeve.
Manon uses twin shadow witches her spies. This sounds similar to Nuala and Cerridwen, who are Rhys’s spies.
Feyre begins her story hating dresses and preferring pants. Manon prefers fighting leathers over dresses. Lidia seems to also wear clothing suitable for fighting, but wears dresses for special occasions. Feyre’s clothing preference is a far cry from fashion loveing Aelin and Bryce who the other two SJM FMCs. Nesta on the other hand, loves dresses.
Lidia wears a silver torque collar as the Hind. This sounds similar to Dorian’s torque collar that makes the valg inhabit him. Lidia is probably not influenced by the valg through the collar but it seems like a breadcrumb.
Manon gets a crown of stars when she becomes queen of all witches. The stars connect to Feyre’s star power, Rhys’ starry eyes, and Ruhn’s connection to the star sword.
The Maasverse is Parallel Worlds/ Reincarnation Story (Spoilers for all three series)
The Maasverse is made of parallel worlds of ACOTAR, Crescent City, and Throne of Glass. I know that SJM is a Sailor Moon fan (as am I) and Sailor Moon was a reincarnation story. There are breadcrumbs in each of the main characters that connect them across worlds. It's not a perfect one-to-one comparison for the characters, which is what makes it all interesting. For each character, the world and their personal experiences still affect them, but their personalities remain the same. And they have to learn the same lessons in each of these worlds. For this reason I broke down personalities and stories by their basic elements.
My comparisons are below in the order of ACOTAR = CC = TOG.
Rhys = Ruhn = Dorian
Archetype: A sweet but arrogant prince.
He has bad boy vibes but is truly a softy. He doesn't agree with the traditions of his father, with who he has a bad relationship.
Rhys and Dorian are the most powerful, whereas Ruhn is expected to be powerful but isn’t at the beginning of the HOEAB. Their mates hold them accountable. Their friendships with Cassian/Hunt/Rowan began rocky. Their friendships with Azriel/Ithan/Chaol are brotherly. In every mate relationship he is mesmerized with her and tries everything to get her.
Feyre = Lydia = Manon
Archetype: Badass with a hidden heritage.
She started on the other side and is now on the good side. All three are spiteful and possibly petty. They are responsible lone wolves who don’t really let their hair down. Their mate gets them to loosen up.
Breadcrumbs
Feyre's fae heritage is hinted at through the series. Lydia is a shifter with fae heritage. Manon Blackbeak learns later that she is the Crochan queen. In each mate relationship, she begins very unsure about her playboy like mate.
Nesta = Bryce = Aelin
Archetype: Snarky Queen
She must confront her heritage and longstanding prejudices to be the queen she needs to be. And she will bite you first. She is clever and good at snark. She loves music, dancing, and books. She is a party girl. She is related to the most powerful male in the series.
Breadcrumbs
Bryce and Aelin are world walkers. Nesta had a tattoo that looked like a wayfinding compass rose. They are all trained to fight in some way before they come into their power. They are all referred to as wolves. They complain about territorial fae bastards/ alpha holes.
Cassian = Hunt = Rowan
Archetype: The best example of a golden retriever trope
He is the tattooed, winged warrior who will give anything to his mate. He is an elite killer who is rigorous in training. He leads in battle, but will let his mate lead him. He has a surprisingly sentimental, thoughtful side.
Breadcrumbs
Hunt and Rowan are princes while Cassian is referred to as "the Prince of Bastards." Hunt and Cassian have powerful, unexplained heritages. Supposedly, Cassian doesn't have much power but has 7 siphons. Hunt was enslaved. Rowan was bound to Maeve. All three had a lover who died. In confrontations with Tamlin and Briallyn, Nesta hears unexplained thunder nearby. In both instances, Cassian is next to her. The thunder is reminiscent of Hunt's lightning power.
Elain = Sathia = Elide
Archetype: Bound to tradition or family
She uses her charm and cleverness to get out of sticky situations.
Breadcrumbs
Elide and Elain are beloved by other characters. Sathia is disliked by her brother but spoiled by her parents. Marriage is expected of Sathia and Elain. Elide is expected to get impregnated by a valg. Sathia has magic that allows her to grow plants. Elide and Lorcan pretend to be married. Sathia and Therion get married. Elain and Lucien know that they are mated.
Lucien = Therion = Lorcan
Archetype: Needs a place in the world
He is jaded with questionable loyalties. Most people don’t entirely trust them. He is good at starting problems with his snark. He is an outdoorsy guy with great tracking and spying skills.
Breadcrumbs
They all have a false love story that affects his loyalty. Lucien had a lover he thought was his mate. Therion has a bad relationship with the River Queen’s daughter. Lorcan is in love with Maeve. Lucien is friends with Feyre and just civil with Nesta. Therion and Bryce flirt but she lost patience with him. Lorcan and Aelin hate each other but are civil later.
Azriel = Ithan= Chaol
Archetype: Fell in love with a woman who doesn’t love him back
He is a responsible and reserved leader. He is a stickler for the rules.
Breadcrumbs
Ithan and Chaol leave their leadership roles and are lost without them. In every case, they question the FMC about following the rules. Azriel and Chaol only care about their mothers. Ithan cares about his only family, Conor. Azriel and Chaol are spies. Amren refers to Azriel as a dog, while Ithan is also teased about being a dog. Best friends with the bad boy; Azriel and Rhys = Chaol and Dorian. Ithan gets invited to live with Ruhn, who takes him under his wing.
Gwyn = Hypaxia = Yrene
Archetype: Cloistered or sheltered person
She is studious in her female-dominated career. She doesn’t think that she should be recognized for her work. She is so focused that she doesn't really notice her mate. The other characters see her as naive when it comes to sex or relationships.
Breadcrumbs
Hypaxia is considered naive because she grew up away from living people. Gwyn grew up in a temple. Yrene just cloistered herself in work. The FMC helps them in their journey. Gwyn and Yrene learn self-defense. Hypaxia and Yrene look similarly.
Other Mentions
Mor= AsterinÂ
Amren = Fury = ?
Varian = Juniper = ?
A Case for Bryce’s HOFAS Alphahole Behavior
One of the biggest criticisms of HoFAS is Bryce’s attitude in Avallen. The fandom felt like she got a personality makeover for the worst. Her change in demeanor is probably caused by the horn in her back Silene’s third of the power.
Much of SJM’s work features religious themes especially from Judaism. She also features the number three her work. Three Archeron sisters. Three bat boys. In Judaism, the number three is characterized as containing two opposing sides with the third entity creating harmony. Take the bat boys for example, Rhys and Cassian were at odds with each other until they met Azriel. In HoFAS, Bryce learns that Theia split her power into thirds.
Bryce was born with the third that Helena carried. During Bryce’s crossover to Prythian she gained Silene’s third of Theia’s power. Having two thirds of Theia’s power, Bryce’s power became dusk with shadow joining her starlight. Starlight and shadow are opposing sides.
The layer of darkness is the third part of Theia’s power that Silene carried.
Helena seemed to have many good intentions concerning others while Silene was selfish in her actions. This gives a hint to the warring two thirds of Theia’s power. Bryce’s actions from this point on emphasize her ability to scheme and the other bad points of her personality . She speaks to Hunt in an uncharacteristically negative way. She is also fighting within herself about her fae heritage as she explores the caves of Avallen.
Once Bryce finds the final third of Theia’s power in Avallen, she is back to her original self.
The final third created harmony within her. She apologizes for her behavior after she receives the last piece of Theia’s power.
Doing a reread of ACOSF for the umpteenth time I’m noticing a lot of references to moonlight for Nesta and Cassian. In fact there are way more moon references than dusk or twilight references when I search my ebook.
The first big reference is during Nesta’s dream after her first scrying attempt. The moon symbolizes safety in this scene.
In the scene by the lake, the moon is mentioned so many times. Everything is gleaming in moonlight or washed in moonlight. The is symbolizing safety and peace for them both.
It’s interesting that Nesta lays her father’s carved rose next to a moon goddess statue. The next line is “Nesta hadn’t let herself dwell on why she felt the need to set the rose there.” Why did Nesta set the rose that her father carved next to the moon goddess who could be the Mother? In this scene, Nesta is using mind-stilling to overcome her anxiety around fire crackling. Maybe she unconsciously is laying the symbol of her feelings about her father as an offering to this moon goddess while is she, Nesta is seeking peace.
Ataraxia blazes like the moon. Ataraxia means inner peace. Her peace of mind was imbued into Ataraxia. That peace is also symbolized by moonlight.
Nesta looking like she devoured the moon. Nesta is at peace while she dances.
The moon is the symbol of serenity, femininity, motherhood and fertility. In ACOSF, the moon represents Nesta’s sense of peace. She’s learning to mother herself, which is a mental therapy concept. Her biological mother was immature, honing Nesta into a weapon for ballroom warfare. In therapy, patients are given the opportunity to consider their parents objectively. What were their parents motivations and understanding that parents are just people with flaws. Nesta acknowledges her parents’ actions throughout the books. Her skewed view of her father was a source of hurt for her. She expected him to be ineffective. However he came to save her and her sisters. He died showing them love which crushed her worldview. She prized her mother but she had to realize that the path that her mother set her on wasn’t right for her. As Nesta carves out her own life, she is reparenting herself. She is learning to love herself and repair the original wounds she received from her family of origin.
The moon descriptions are also included in Cassian’s POV. It also seems to guide both him and Nesta in their journeys. The moon could also represent the Mother who created the Cauldron. Nesta has a connection with the Cauldron.
I haven’t read all the books in TOG but I have seen theories that Nesta’s silver flames are moon fire.
Based on these moon references, my conclusion is that Nesta is absolutely meant to be in the Night Court.
