Usually, this is the way that patterns tell you to switch yarn (method 2):
Once you've gotten to where you're going to start using the second color, you just pull through
and finish the stitch like you usually would
But you'll notice that the stitch right here
is overlapping with the 2nd color and, when you build up rows, that would make a very zig-zaggy line. If that's what you're looking for, then that's great.
If you want a straight line on the right, try method 1:
Get to the stitch 2 before the stitch you want your second color to start in (the switch stitch hereafter). Example: If the 2nd color starts in stitch 20, stop at stitch 18.
1. Insert your hook into the stitch before your switch stitch (19 in our example above).
2. Pull through the first color, as you usually would
6. Now you pull through a 2nd yarn color to finish the switch stitch.
