One of our old cops. I think her name was Clem.
"Shit that sounds bad. You reckon she's dead?
So I hear we have people going missing out on those supply runs?
"Really? Like who? I reckon that's going to be the normal around here all things considered."
Has anyone seen Ren? Iâve been looking everywhere for him and canât find him.
"Can't say I have. Did you need help with something? I mean maybe I could lend a hand."
âI guess I really shouldnât have gotten used to the peace and quiet.â
"Nothing wrong with hoping for it though."
âI work at Gray Farms. Iâm a farmhand most days. Sometimes I go tâschool but mostly I jusâ work.â
"How about I walk you there? It would make me feel better knowing you got there safe."
Helping Hand {Hunter&Berry}
Berry nodded their head, moving to stand. Back at full height, they pulled the first book down from the bookshelf and gestured back towards the counter and started moving that way.
âI was here at the Book Nook during the storm, so Iâm quite alright.â Berry answered. It was quite lucky that Berry had been inside during the storm. It wouldnât have been pretty if they had been stuck outside.
âI am, coincidentally enough, nearing running low on memory,â Berry admitted. Since the Book Nookâs stock was slowly depleting, Berry had taken to committing the more important books to memory. Unfortunately there was not exact formula for deciphering what would be important and what would not, so Berry found themselves going through many books.
"Good to hear." Hunter hadn't heard of many injuries from the storm which was good, and he was even more grateful that the Android's were still fairing well. "Well hey if you don't mind, once I get this thing sorted, I could always help you out with that. I promise to not screw anything up."
Iâm fucking fine. [speaks through gritted teeth]
"Sorry to say miss but you look a little worse for wear 'bout now."
Hide it Out // Evan & Hunter
Evan noticed the way the man lurched for a weapon and his heart stopped, but as his hand fell he found a moment to calm down. Closing the door behind him as quietly as he could with shaking hands, he took a step into the room and ran a hand through his hair, gripping it to relieve some stress. âI donât know,â He replied, feeling more useless than he sounded. âI saw a couple but it sounded like there were more. They just, just came out of nowhere.â
Dropping his hand from his head, he wiped his palms down on his thighs to dry up some of the sweat, although it felt as though his whole body was layered in it. âIâm not going to try anything or, or hurt you. Nothing like that.â He said quickly, attempting to remain calm. He hoped that the other man would return the favour, but Evan just couldnât be sure with strangers, even if it came across as rude. âI just wantedâ I thought it would be safe.â
âYeah I was headed here when I saw a few of them. I sure wasnât sticking around to count âem.â
That would have been suicide for sure. In the silence he found a couple milk crates and set them, gesturing at one for the other man.
âDonât worry âbout it. You can stay here until this blows over. Probably wonât take the mayorâs workers to clean this shit up.â
At least that was the hope. Sitting down on the crate, Hunter wondered what else the poor guy had seen on his way here. He certainly wasnât up for the gore of the days events.
âIâm Hunter by the way.â
âHow long do you think the Mayor will keep the Androids around,â Micah asked as he picked up the âdining roomâ chairs, dining room meaning a part of their tiny kitchen where his mother put a table and some beat up chairs. âDonât get me wrong, I think theyâre really helpful with a of lot things, but how long until the Mayor has them turned into scrap metal? The thought is crazy because Iâm reading this book about a society that harvests kids body parts, called unwinding, and Iâve just realized that that could become a reality for Androids. I donât think I could stand the thought of Berry being unwound. Good luck on the programming though.â Micah didnât really like that idea at all, not just for Berry, but for every Android. They might not be human, but he thought they still mattered and could help out just as much as any human could. âThanks. He was a great guy, taught me everything I know about architecture and repair. He was my best friend,â he replied with a soft smile at the thought of his dad. âCanât say the same about my brother, heâs an asshole. Iâm closer to my mother and sister. You got any siblings? Or were you lucky to be born an only child?â
"I don't think he'll do anything with them and just let them fall apart actually," Hunter answered with a tone of disgust. "Trust me buddy I don't plan on giving up on them. I'll keep up the repairs and stuff myself I have to." He wasn't sure who else was up for keeping the Android's up and going, but he sure hoped someone had the same idea as him, and apparently Micah too. "Sounds like a cool dude. I was an only child. I reckon that's why they wanted me to be the best. Bloody annoying was more like it. It sounds awful but I don't miss 'em."
Hide it Out // Evan & OPEN
Taking a walk wasnât an abnormal thing for Evan to find himself doing, since there wasnât much else for him to do around Pleasant Town. People had jobs, they contributed to the society that they had built up, and Evan felt little more than a leech on supplies for as long as he was there. Part of him felt swayed to make a bold move and decide to stay, or at least ask for permission to do so, but he didnât quite feel ready to abandon all hope to find the rest of his family.Â
As his thoughts took over Evan found himself distracted, which he didnât pay too much mind to since he felt safe behind Pleasant Townâs walls. But on that particular day, he should have been more cautious. Eyes on the ground and paying little mind to his surroundings, Evan continued on the route that he had decided to take that day and it was only when he turned a corner that a noise managed to tear his attention away from his thoughts. It was a low, grumbling noise that sounded almost like a growl, and once his gaze drew from the floor to meet the source of the sound, he found that it was indeed a growl and a dangerous one at that.Â
Evan had caught sight of a group of the infected, not large enough to call a herd but still threatening, banging and clawing at a residentâs door. They seemed distracted, so much so they didnât seem to notice the gasp that escaped his mouth as the sight startled him, and he wasnât willing to take any chances by hanging around a moment longer. Sprinting back in the direction from which he had come, Evan wasnât sure if it was paranoia that was making him hear more of the noises from different directions or if he truly was surrounded as it seemed.
Taking his first instinct, Evan dived for a door when it felt safe with no idea what was behind it, and hurled himself through it, breath hitched in his throat as his heart raced in his chest. It took him a few moments of re-calibration to notice that there was someone else in the room with him. âOh God,â He blurted, throwing his hands up as if in surrender. âIâm sorry. Itâs just, um, well, itâs not safe out there, I, I just grabbed the first door I saw⊠Thought Iâd hide, hide it out but I can⊠actually, Iâd rather not have to go back out there, if thatâs alright with you.â He was breathless, stuttering here and there out of panic, throwing an innocent smile their way.
Hunter had taken up refuge in the garage feeling as if it would be the safest. Namely because it was familiar. He was pacing though as he listened to the horrific sounds outside.
Between the moans of the dead and the screams of people, his nerves were a wreck. About to grab a wrench as the door opened, he breathed a sigh of relief when he saw it was just another person.
âNo man youâre fine. Just close that door.â He gestured at it and drew his hand away from the pile of tools. âHow bad is it out there?â
Hunter wasnât sure he wanted to know, but a good count was always nice to know.
[sits in an alley, vigorously sawing through her hair, chopping it off to her chin. Tears burn her eyes, but only a couple escape]
Damn it âŠ
"Whoa, hey. You ok miss? You hurt?"
âYouâre out here alone too. Iâm just going to work.â
"I--well I'm a adult. That's different kiddo. Where do you work?"
Helping Hand {Hunter&Berry}
What the young man was looking for was very interesting. Berry tilted their head curiously as they paused in mock thought. There were several options that could be potentially useful for him and Berry ran through them in their head. By the way he spokeâhe was confident in what he was looking forâBerry assumed that he wasnât simply a beginner. So rather than lead him to so basic guides, they instead gestured for him to follow down their more serious reference section.
âHere we have some advanced programming manuals based around some of the more popular models,â their finger brushed against a few spines right next to one another. âThis one, however, is a general programming reference text that includes room for the reader to adjust coding as they deem necessary.â
Berry crouched down for a moment before pulling a rather dingy and rough looking book from the shelf. âThis would be good if you wanted to build a way to add memory. Itâs based on upgrading your own cellphones or computers, but itâs the closest we have to androids.â
Hunter had to admit he was watching her work with his mindset being of his occupation. It was his duty after-all to ensure all the Androids were working alright considering the Mayor could care less.
âIâll take both,â he told them, glancing at a few of the books himself before returning his attention. âHow are you by the way? I mean that dust storm was pretty bad.â
âLooks like it. Ouch. Are you sure youâre okay?â
"Yeah yeah, just some scraped knees. No big deal. Hey, what are you doing out by yourself? I reckon that's not the safest."
Helping Hand {Hunter&Berry}
Berry smiled at the recognition. Though they werenât able to recognize the man before them. âBerryâs right. Have we met before?â Their tone was casual and curious, though they were testing to see if there was a possible bug in their system, not recognizing someone they should.
âWhat are you looking to wire together? We have some specific books for electrical work like for cars and lamps and stuff,â they added.
"No, but I spoke to Micah. He let me know you could be pretty helpful in finding what I need," Hunter explained. "It's for a Android program actually. I'm trying to eliminate glitches for longer. Like, a large memory capbility and that sort of thing."
âYeah, Iâm a really big fan,â he chuckled with a nod and a wide smile. âI love them so much that Iâve read almost every book in The Book Nook. N-not that Iâm bragging! I-I donât do that.â Micah rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly with a sheepish look on his face. Pointing this out had become a habit of his whenever he explained things like that to people, especially when it came to him being gifted. It wasnât that he wasnât proud of being very smart, he just always felt the need to point out that he wasnât bragging because he didnât want to offend others. âOh! And Berry prefers âtheyâ and âthemâ pronouns instead of the usual female ones. Just so you know.â He added for good measure, returning to cleaning up the kitchen before stopping again. âIâd be more than happy to offer some good programming books that Iâve read, but I have no idea what youâre working on.â Micah commented and then returned to cleaning, still keeping his ears open to what Hunter had to say. âIâm sorry to hear that, man. That wasnât cool of your folks.â He said sympathetically. Yet, he couldnât help but think how much his brother would like Hunter so he could spend all of his time talking about how much he hated Micah. âYeah, my mom, older sister, and twin brother. My dad died when I was thirteen.âÂ
"No worries. It's not bragging when you're explaining." Hunter at least thought so. He was glad to see someone else liked books considering most weren't so interested these days. Nodding, he acknowledged the comment about Berry; putting it to memory for when he went. He didn't want to offend them even if they were a Android. He thought you should treat everyone equally. "Just a program for the Android's to keep them running better for longer. A sort of fix to some glitches, but I made more glitches in the process. Something isn't adding up," he explained with a frustrated sigh at the thought. He had been working tirelessly for days and it was getting nowhere quick. With a frown at the latter information, "Don't worry about it, and sorry man about your dad. That really sucks, but at least you got other family you know? I think that's a plus. I wish mine would have done a better job in the parenting department."
