a crisp breeze drafted through the air as madeline made her way to the bean & co coffee shop to grade some papers, which probably wasn’t the best idea she had, considering she found a bottle or two of champagne in one of her cupboards. pushing the café door open, a sigh escaped her lips. a bubbling group in the corner instantly hushed as she walked in – instantly recognising one another as student and teacher. petending not to see them, maddie made her way to the counter, ordering an americano and a pastry before finding a seat by the window and letting her bag rest against the table.
a crimson mark decorated the porcelain mug as she sipped her coffee, the bitter liquid cascaded down her throat, instantly reviving her. after correcting a couple of papers, her frustration peaked as scarlet pen danced through each page – angered and exasperated marks littered the margins as she read the answers given. a thwarted expression etched its way onto her features, her brow creasing as she read word after word.
hearing a sudden commotion in the corner from her students, madeline felt like throwing the papers at them, clearly her hangover still billowing from the night before. turning to the person nearest to her, she quizzed, “ is it just me, or are kids much more insufferable as the years go on? or am i just bitter and old? ” she knew deep down that her frustration wasn’t purely from the gaggle of giggles in the corner, perhaps it was more from the buzz of the hangover that still lingered in her head. “ apologies for off-loading and asking that, a hangover and grading do not go well together, let me tell you, ” maddie half-smiled, “ although, do you think the barista would give me a free coffee if i give them these papers for the fire, i won’t lie, I’m kinda tempted. ” @30extra
* marianne’s perched herself in the corner booth at the taste bar , shoulders relaxed on her third glass of wine and playing voyeur for the lovers all around the venue — the exhaustion that swells in her bones is numbed by the alcohol , and this curious situation is now a little more cheeky to her. she makes note of another approaching figure , seemingly just as confused by the canoodling couples , and in her state, she opts to take a chance and coyly wave them over , “ don’t worry, i didn’t get the memo that it was date night, either. ” she offers a hopeless shrug , soft laughter bubbling to the surface , “apparently , couples get a free dessert tonight, if you’d like to take a seat. ” @30extra·
jealously was never something in madeline’s psyche, it was simply not in her nature. she had never longed for anything that she didn’t have, and seeing happy couples mingling and cavorting didn’t seem to bother her in the slightest. one time, many moons ago, maddie had been one of those couples. her eyes filled with little pink and red hearts for a man who tossed her out like a forgotten memory --- however, it made her into who she was ( didn’t it?! ) and even seeing the people dotted around taste, she didn’t lose a moments peace. seeing another person alone at the bar, madeline set herself beside her, hoping she didn’t mind. “ well, i certainly am glad that i’m not the only one here on my own.” saying it out loud that she was glad she wasn’t the only one, made madeline feel slightly melancholic, but the emotion quickly subsided. “i guess, we’re a couple then. i am seriously craving some cheesecake,” the blonde said, throwing a lock of golden tresses over one shoulder as she caught a waiter’s attention, asking for a menu. “is it just me, or do some of these couples genuinely look like they could be related?” she quipped, arching a brow as she gawked with amusement at the couples surrounding them.

Madeline Huntington came from the kind of family that could sent ripple effects throughout the business world. Her father, Michael, came from a background of enormous wealth, which continued on into her generation. There wasn’t ever anything Madeline had cared or wished for that she never got. Growing up in the suburbs of Atlanta, her mother, Susan, was a debutante and society queen. Image was everything to her parents, which was pushed on Madeline and her siblings as they grew up.
From an early age, Maddie knew the pretentious life just simply wasn’t for her. The more she grew, the more she realised that history and English was all she ever wanted to do. While her siblings went to Ivy League schools to get MBAs, Madeline had applied to NYU under the same business pretence, however, while she was there, she quietly changed her major to history, minoring in English. Her dream had always to be a teacher. Unlike her siblings, Maddie loved to have her mind engrossed in a book, quietly absorbing each and every word. She had hidden her secret until the last semester, which was blown into smithereens when her sisters came to visit. The surprise had left her without a chance to even hide her textbooks that lay on her desk. Begging her sisters to not tell her father, who had every intention to ensure all his children would work in the family business. However, her sisters had other plans. A vicious fight ensued; her father was disgusted at Madeline’s dishonesty and the “lack of consideration for her future”. It was decided to give Madeline her entire inheritance purely, so she’d never have to contact him again.
Madeline wanted to be so far removed from the Atlanta and New York jet set lifestyle. Once she received her teaching qualifications, she packed her bags, taking her entire life to Lakeview. However, it wasn’t just for her teaching ambitions that she had wanted to up and move to somewhere as remote as Lakeview. While in college, Madeline had discovered a light addiction to certain substances. Partying was a comfort for her once her family had disowned her. It didn’t help that her relationship that was with her high school sweetheart. Once the family issue arose, he decided that a teacher who hadn’t her incredibly wealthy family behind her, wasn’t for him. It slowly came to Madeline’s realisation that he had only been using her for her status, and that alone crushed her immensely. Her sorority had been a slight party house too, which didn’t help. However, now that she wasn’t in college anymore, her dependency had eased. Now, she would indulge and dabble slightly in her previous lifestyle.
Once she had moved to Lakeview, she adopted a golden retriever called “Scooby” and seemed to have settled down nicely in the town in an open and spacious condo. Her weekdays are often spent in a warm, cosy little coffee shop with the most delightful pastries. Her weekends however, are spent in nightclubs and in bars, the bright lights illuminating her skin like little stars dancing in the night sky.
