– “Her happiness floated like waves of ocean along the coast of her life.“
Twenty seven years ago, there was a storm that rocked the coastline of Aiónios, worse than any storm to reach the island in the past forty years. The locals referred to it as Hurricane Ilena. It lasted for four days, and came on without warning. The skies turned from blue to grey and before anyone knew it, rivers and rivers of rain poured like tears from the sky. Rumor has it, it was more than just a force of nature. They said it was a sign from the Gods themselves. And in that storm, a boat containing a man, a woman, and a five month old baby were at the mercy of the sea’s deadly assault. To save their only child, the man and the woman prayed to the Gods above to spare her life, and cast their baby out to sea in a basket with a baby blanket and a rattle placed gently next her. They hoped, by some miracle, she would reach the shoreline before they did (or the Gods willing, she would live). So they prayed and they prayed, even as the mast on their own sailboat broke under the weight of the waves– and the Titans heard their prayers. Their daughter made it to shore, but the man and the woman perished in that storm.
Found nestled in a crook between the rocks at low tide by an older lighthouse keeper and his wife on the East side of Aiónios, the baby cried and cried until she was picked up, desperate for comfort, for warmth, for care… for life. They named her Elena after the very same hurricane she was found in. A week later he real parents’ bodies washed up on the shore in South Aiónios, and while it was presumed what happened to them, no one could quite figure out what happened to their five month old child. It was simply presumed she perished in the storm as well, though her body was never found. A secret Elena’s adoptive parents kept from her for her entire life, it wasn’t until a year ago that they finally revealed her true identity. Afraid that someone from the Island’s social services would come to take her away, they had grown too attached to the baby they found on the shore to give her up. Raising her as their own, Elena grew up happy and loved in a little cabin by the ocean an hour away from downtown Aiónios… though it felt more like light-years of distance between her and the city. Homeschooled by her parents, she spent her childhood with her feet in the sand and examining crabs and tide pool critters.
Private and hard working people, her parents did their best to shield her from the rest of the island. Descendants from the original Greek settlers in the 16th century, both her parents knew well the island’s history and its inhabitants. Choosing to leave behind their life in central Aiónios to tend a lighthouse on the East side of the island and build their own homestead, they made a choice years ago to abandon their ties with the immortals and the drama they brought with them. They wanted the same for their daughter, whether she knew it or not. But Elena was far too big for the little section of the island she was confined to and each day she spent happily exploring, she also spent looking for ways to leave. Curious by nature, and more beautiful by the day, as she grew, her parents knew that someday they would have to tell her the truth. But it wasn’t until her twenty sixth birthday they finally broke the news.
– “The sea is a desert of waves, awilderness of water.”
Perhaps the most earth shattering part of their confession was how she was not their true daughter. Eager to find out more about her birth parents, it took her a year of internal debate whether she truly wanted to leave home to see the rest of the world by herself or not. She was scared, yes, but she was eager to see what the rest of the island held. She was eager to do something other than tend to the chickens and cattle on their homestead. She was eager to see something other than just barren landscape. It was time for her to leave, and through tears, her parents sent her off with their blessing to central Aiónios, where she bought an apartment and began a new life for herself. Though they never told her an extensive run down of the island’s history, they figured by letting her go, it was only a matter of time before she experienced it herself… and wanted to come running back.
Vivacious, curious, and enigmatic, Elena is still figuring out city life for herself. A force of nature, she is someone who will not hesitate to do what she needs to do, and in times of great duress, is a powerful ally instead of a foe. What she lacks in physical strength, she makes up for in strategy and wit. Though not weak by any means, she has found city living to be significantly less laborious than homesteading and tries to find ways to keep active and in tune with nature, from running barefoot through the forest to climbing over rocks on the beach. Grounded firmly in the present, there is no place else she’d rather be. Little does she know, the past always has a way of catching up and there are secrets scattered all around the island that will threaten to shake the very core of her beliefs.
