COMING 25.08.17 / ALL MY FRIENDS (Are Liars)
Have a look see! The official artwork for our upcoming single coming your way in less than two weeks! I'm both excited and terrified as I share this with you all.
We wrestled with the idea of how we would create and record our upcoming tracks, and came to the conclusion that we had nothing to lose by doing everything ourselves. We tracked the drums in a giant 1000+ seater church on the central coast, and did everything else in and out of the different rooms at Nick's house. What was great was that we really got to take our time, play around, make mistakes and learn a lot about who we are as a band through this process. What we've created is more 'us' than anything else we've released. And for the first time in a while I feel nervous as I wear my heart on my sleeve for you all to see.
I'll see you all on 25.08.2017.
Ana
THANK YOU
We are so overwhelmed by all the people, strangers, punters, friends, bands, crew and staff that participated in one way or another in our four week long residency at the Captain Cook Hotel.
It was kind of nerve-racking. We played new tracks that we weren't really prepared to play. Well, maybe the boys were. But I sure as hell wasn't. But I had a bloody blast. Sometimes residencies for little bands like us can be really discouraging (especially given the current climate of late night culture in Sydney, cc: Mike Baird). But in reflecting on it all, I feel really excited.
So that being said, it's safe to say we've got new stuff coming at you very soon.
Oh, notice the fresh new website? Have a gander!
Hang tight & much love
Ana
COMING SOON: LIVE VIDEO
We teamed up with Studio Bleus and recorded one of our new tracks. Stick around for the recording! Until then, wet your lips with this blooper reel.
OUTSIDE LOOKING IN (LIVE)
A big shout out to Studio Bleus for letting us crash his studio! Watch our live rendition of "Outside Looking In" below and download the track for free on our Triple J Unearthed profile here
Girls To The Front
Happy International Women's Day!
What a time to be a woman. Sure, there's a lot of horrible things surrounding us right now (read this for one), but can we just take a moment to celebrate the generations of women that have fought for the many rights we live with today? Thank you ladies! Thank you mothers, protesters, politicians - fierce women of all ages and industries that don't sit down at injustice. Love you all!
I've decided that I'm not going to use this platform to bash on about everything that needs fixing, but rather celebrate the progress we are making. I'm a firm believer in the notion that change starts with one. It starts with you. It starts with me.
And before you think I'm some self-righteous lass, keep reading... I'll be honest, one of the biggest things I struggle with being a girl in music is bashing on other girls in music. And why? Because we're a damn rare breed and I think we were raised to think like this. And yes, I know I need to change. So to address this issue that I (and probably a lot of other women in or out of music face) I'm going to write about some female artists that inspire me and have and are killing it in music.
1. Gwen Stefani (No Doubt) I was about 11 years old when I got my hands on a No Doubt Live DVD for $5 at some market sale, and it changed my life. She carries this energy that inspires my own live stage antics. She is uniquely herself and I would be an idiot not to credit "Just A Girl" as my anthem as I became more self-aware growing up.
2. Hayley Williams (Paramore) Yup, how typical right? Oh well. I tried really hard early on to disassociate myself from this band, and tried hard to pretend like they weren't an influence. Okay they are! In high school I dyed my hair red, I sang songs like "Born For This" and "We Are Broken" - and you know what I freaking love "Decode". There, I said it. Say what you will. Paramore are that band that I listened to on repeat because their music resonated with whatever adolescent awkwardness I was dealing with back then. Hayley's singing actually inspired me to seek out proper vocal training, it's been almost a decade since I started getting lessons and I've come such a long way.
3. Isabella Manfredi (The Preatures) I froth over female rock artists killing it. I have this real deep-rooted fear that rock is dead and I'll never make it. But Isabella gave me hope to keep writing and plugging away. I love the sweetness and roughness that she creates with her voice. Thanks for championing live music & late night culture in Sydney.
4. Vera Blue (Celia Pavey) I bloody love every song she puts out. Her lyrics are so interesting and challenge me not just to blabber on and fill music with empty words, but to be really purposeful with the what I come up with. Sometimes I'll be listening to her songs and I'll think "Oh wow! That's clever". I couldn't be more happy for the explosive success she's having.
5. Billie Holiday When I started learning about jazz and listening to her stuff, I thought to myself "What the heck is this?" Though thankfully, that changed. I think this lady is pretty freaking rock 'n' roll. With songs like "Strange Fruit" - I feel that she takes really dark, melancholic themes and turns them into really beautiful works of aural art. She had come from nothing, and turned that into a legacy.
There is a long list of women in music that I love, Carole King, Susan Tedeschi, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Amy Winehouse, Lorde, Beyonce, Courtney Barnett, Grace Potter and so on... We could spend hours just listening and watching some of these legends and talk about how amazing they are. Lastly, if you're like me, and you're trying to make your way through this tough place, take a deep breath, keep working hard, our time is coming.
Peace out. Ana
BEHIND THE SONG: Don't Say A Word
If you've caught us live recently, Don't Say A Word is one of the newer more upbeat and pop/rock tunes we've written. This song is about sticking to your guns, being faithful to what makes you unique, and the life you live through that. Don't rush through the hustle and bustle of life, keep your eyes on your big picture and the little strokes it takes to get there. You can keep your day job, but don't let that take your heart away from your dream. And you might sneer and think that "dreaming" is only for children, but you can only say that if you've given up. And you know what? You don't have to give up your dream. So what if you see your friends less, if you consume less, if you have to work harder... if it's all for something you're passionate about and working towards, it will pay off. Don't fret about how others perceive you, how do you perceive you?
Here's the lyrics:
I swim along, while everybody rows. Their faces always changing, never pause, they're yelling it's the only way to go. I couldn't be the only one. Sky is lit. A miracle with days so dark they'd never know where time had gone. They're shouting nonsensical. I couldn't be the only one.
Stick to me, stick to me. Together we will show them, show them.
Baby don't say a word. You don't need to reason girl, I stick around 'cos I'm drawn to your light. You don't owe me anything. Baby don't say a word.
Found a kid, the wisest soul. Keeps his head up in the lows and he keeps dancing even when they all say no. We couldn't be the only ones.
We can breathe, we can breathe. We are so free and we know it, know it.
Baby don't say a word. You don't need to reason girl, I stick around 'cos I'm drawn to your light. You don't owe me anything. Baby don't say a word.
And I'll bury all my baggage. Put my fists high in the air. Never wanted all this traffic so I dive into my own dares. And I've cursed all of my takers. Running 'til my muscles burn. Only talking when it's valuable.
Baby don't say a word. You don't need to reason girl, I stick around 'cos I'm drawn to your light. You don't owe me anything. Baby don't say a word.
Stick to me, stick to me. Together we will show them, show them. We can breathe, we can breathe. We are so free and we know it, know it. Baby don't say a word. Baby don't say a word.
Peace out Ana x
