If you don’t mind me adding my two cents.
I’d offer that Starsky’s family is specifically very close. In a few episodes they show Starsky calling his mom which is revealed to be either a daily or weekly thing. And he clearly stays on pretty long with her bc when we see them chatting it’s like about the whole day. And usually in the evening, I’ve been assuming Starsky’s mom is in New York or New Jersey and California is 3 hours later than the east coast which would mean she probably stays up waiting for her son to call her on whatever days it’s expected that he calls.
Then you have obvsly Nick and Dave being extremely close in Starsky’s Brother. There are lots of reasons families can be close but staying so close even when being pretty far from each other is a special kind of bond, and with Starsky’s father never once being mentioned I personally believe that Starsky’s dad was probably abusive, but probably also left their life when Nick was young, either through divorce or death. Victims of an abuser can often become closer together bc of the shared experience of abuse. (This is not a sure thing but has been observed in many cases)
If Starsky as the oldest brother was forced into a position where he had to stand up for his mother and younger brother it would have both made him feel a sense of responsibility to keep up with his mother, so she never feels alone, but this would also make it so when Starsky meets Hutch, and they become close. And Hutch, who grew up probably upper middle class near the Great Lakes and probably coped with his shitty parents by getting a car and spending most of his days anywhere but home. Maybe even got on a boat and sailed on the Great Lakes for a while, who coped with bad parents by getting independence, something starsky, who probably grew up lower middle class or poor, inner city kinda kid, and didn’t have the opportunity to get a car and other classic American independence signs and was forced into being an adult at a young age whereas hutch wouldn’t have had to, would find comfort in having someone who can be the mature one. Someone who can be the grown up while he gets to enjoy his youth years after it was taken from him.
Starsky is probably touchy with Hutch bc he learned he can trust this man with his life and finally got to relax. Finally got to stop being a grown up. And Hutch, who I believe was probably neglected and given heaps of expectations only for him to break under the pressure as is common for children of middle class parents was taken aback discovering how badly he was actually neglected.
I also think Hutch probably experienced some kinds of Abuse from his ex-wife which exasperated his being touch starved.
I realize this is maybe more than my 2 cents….maybe more like 2 dimes…or even quarters 😅
