A cheapskate’s sort-of review of mobile service

I’m frugal by nature, geeky, and appreciate finding ways to beat the system. Over the years, I’ve switched to more obscure wireless plans:

T-Mobile to T-Mobile prepaid, and enjoyed T-Mobile Tuesday giveaways

MetroPCS, which has visual voicemail and had hotspot included and cheap Canada roaming

Ultra Mobile, without visual voicemail, but with hotspot and good roaming, after MetroPCS canceled hotspot and roaming on value plans

The best part is that my plans are getting cheaper: $30 for the first 2, and $24 for the latest. I get 2GB of data a month, but I don’t stream video normally. All of these use the T-Mobile network, so if I use up the data, it just goes slow for the rest of my billing month.

I wanted visual voicemail back, so I tried YouMail. It’s free for the basics and I’m loving it so far. The bonus is that it’s an excellent junk call blocker! I tried two others that are free, Should I Answer? and Call Control, but YouMail is easier once you get it set up and more effective.
