Maxence by Pierre Mouton
dylanmorr:
Dylan was walking in the park, in a desperate need of fresh air as his apartment air conditioner was broken. “Oh fuck yeah.” He sat down next to the stranger. “I’d love some candy.”
Hunter nodded, relieved they were not being frowned upon by their out of ordinary behaviour. They went to rummage through their messenger bag and reached for another candy bar. They weren’t hungry enough for lunch so they skipped it, satisfied enough with their snacks. Hunter handed one of theri Snickers to him. “Here.. it’s not much.” They smiled bashfully.
Heat was warming their body, encouraging them to feel placid as they laid on their stomach in the grass. Hunter opened a candy wrapper with their hands and teeth shakily. They weren’t accustomed to going outside alone but their parents were out of town for the weekend, unable to take care of their needs. Against their own caution they decided to leave their apartment to get some fresh air. They chewed on their candy and stayed watching the sun. Soon they noticed a pair of feet shuffling next to them. They hated talking but they didn’t want awkwardness. “He-hello.” They said, nodding timidly. “It’s-it’s a beautiful day, is it not? Would you like some candy?”
aubrey--harkin:
When the ball hit Aubrey, she jumped but if it had done anything, it had only startled her. After taking a moment to collect her surprise, she shook her head and said “Oh, no, no. I’m totally fine, I’m not hurt. I just wasn’t expecting it, that’s all.” She picked up the ball that lay at her feet and handed it back to him. “Here you go.”
Playing with their upper lip, Hunter tried their damnedest not to scurry off. It was just Aubrey, there was no need to be nervous. That being said with the exception of their good friend Maya, Hunter never really talked to many people of the opposite gender and it made them more anxious than usual. “S-Sorry.” They said despite her words. “I should-ve been more careful. I got.. a little too excited I suppose.”
oriionsgalaxies:
The basketball bouncing off his head rocket-launched him back a good six years, paralleling the multitude of times various sports balls were ricocheted off him with ill intent. Stiffening instantly, his arms raised up to shield his face, halting his journey back home. Lowering his arms slowly when the other person approached, posture hunched like a rat in the corner of a cage, mistrust festered from a cavernous, dark catacomb of his mind that housed years of bad memories. False nicety was commonplace, especially in the city. He remained in his impliable position, a turtle withdrawn into its shell. A moment too late to find his voice, he finally returned, “I’m… alright. It wasn’t all that forceful.”
Hunter wasn’t comforted by the reassurance. Not when when they were conclusive they had given him a scare when they looked over his hunched body. They should have been more careful, stopped acting like an idiot. They hadn’t meant to do any harm though but they felt a horrible sense of dread creeping over the consciousness still. Stupid. They told themself. This is why they should never ever go out in public. They should’ve stayed inside, with mum and dad, locked from society. People with.. problems like his shouldn’t mingle. “I startled you though.. I’m deeply sorry.” They added, digging their nails into the ball. “Did-did you get hurt? I have-have bandaids if you want.”
Hanging their head low, Hunter’s fingers were interlacing one another and they sported a nerve-racked look on their face. They’d been playing a little bit of basketball earlier just all by themself but much to their absolute dismay and fear, the ball had slipped out their clutch and hit one of the people walking by. Meek smile on their face, they looked up at the unlucky person and prepared themself to receive a lot of scolding. “I’m, I’m, I’m sorry.. I didn’t mean to do that.” They said as they bit their lower lip. “A-are you hurt?”
gcmechanger:
“Don’t understand a thing about football, really. But today is one of the few days I can eat half my weight in hot wings and no one judges. Happy Super Bowl Sunday.”
Hunter shifted uneasily. Although Maya was their friend, they still felt very insecure for their lack of mundane knowledge. As a child, they weren’t able to comprehend a lot of things and they were too focused in their own world. “I don’t understand either. It-it seems violent?” They said while they looked at the screen. “Why would anyone judge-judge you for eating hot wings? They’re great, thought I very much prefer the mild ones.”
janegera:
“Those two can go together, you dumby.” Jane rolled her eyes. “Man, ghosts are so cool.” She raised her eyebrows when he mentioned weed being hazardous. “What? Fuck no. Weed is safer than caffeine. It’s not like meth.”
“Don’t call me dumby!” They snapped, their voice rising. That name reminded them of all of the bullies who used to make fun of them and they could feel their skin crawl when they thought of it. They ignored her comment about ghosts. “Really because you don’t look very safe right now. You’re-you’re drunk and high and you’re saying bad things.”
gcmechanger:
“Everyone deserves kindness, Hunter. Even you.” Maya replied, letting out a deep sigh as more of their insecurities rose to the surface. Truthfully, Hunter reminded Maya so much of herself, that every doubt made her feel empathetic towards them. “You’re a good kid with a lot to offer the world. And as your friend, I should encourage that potential.”
Not according to them. Hunter whispered to themself but they didn’t say it outloud. They felt like they had made themself too weak already and thought Maya would have enough of it. They really didn’t want to lose her. “Thank you.” Hunter tried to smile again. It was less genuine than before but it was there still. “I feel like I should do something in return. As your-your friend.”
gcmechanger:
“What are you talking about? You’ve totally changed! Look how you opened up to me. If that’s not progress, then I don’t know what is.” Maya replies with encouragement, refusing to let Hunter put themselves down in her presence. It wasn’t allowed. No way. No how. “I don’t have a normal schedule, so it’s hard to say. But just send me a text if you’re too anxious to call. I’ll get back to you. Promise.”
“It’s only because you’re so kind to me.” Hunter replied, though their smile growing. Kindness ends. Hunter had no idea how long it would take before Maya started to get sick of their flaws just like those teachers at home. They didn’t want to say that outloud, too afraid to lose her. “Can I ask you a question then? While we’re at it.” They said. “Why are you being so nice to me? I-I’m still confused. don’t know if I deserve it.”
gcmechanger:
“Where you are now—it’s not where you’ll be in week, month, year, etc. We’re all growing, processing lessons from our experiences that further mold us. Don’t worry too much about it, okay? One day, you’ll look back on this time and feel silly for ever letting it get to you.” She advised kindky, offering them another smile that was accompanied with a blush at their compliment. Hunter was the real sweetheart between them. Maya carefully took their phone and typed her number in, saving it as her name with the frog emoji beside it. She then offered the device back once she was done. “Don’t be afraid to call or text.”
Hunter nodded then kept their head down. Mostly ashamed of themself. “I know, thank you. But I wish it could be that easy. People just keep expecting and waiting for me to-to change, to not get stuck like this forever. And I feel-I feel bad because I haven’t changed at all.” Their parents were patient with them and would help them take steps, but it only made them feel bad for not being able to work on a same pace. They felt like they were just doing disappointing them. They nodded, allowing a soft smile. “I will. How often are-are you free? I wouldn’t want to interrupt your work or anything.”
gcmechanger:
“Here’s the thing, I didn’t get this way over night. It took time and patience and hard work to be as comfortable with myself as I am.” Maya replied, recalling the first ever voice acting job they ever had. She was so nervous and had to do so many retakes. But it was a learning experience, one that molded Maya into the actress she was. “Not a mastermind yet but I’m getting there.” She smiled, flattered by their compliment. “Yeah, sure. Give me your phone and I’ll type it in.”
Hunter pulled something that resembled a smile. “I’m not even-even comfortable with who I am now. It’s-it’s great that were able to find a lot of confidence even if it took time.” Hunter tried to think of their talents if they even existed. They remembered their uncle coming home to say they were good with building Legos. Or building, in general. “I can see you-you being the sweetest mastermind.” They grinned, before blushing. “Here you go.” They said as they shyly offered their phone.
gcmechanger:
“Lots of experimentation, not being afraid to look or sound silly. Because in the end you do but if you focus on having fun and being into character—it all falls into place.” Maya answered with a smile, leaning back against her seat. She knew she had a gift but it wasn’t until some time later that she appreciated it. “Depends on who you find famous, I’ve worked and met with the best of actors but some of them never have their faces on screen. “ She replied, tapping her fingers against the table, stretching them out when the action became too monotonous for her. “Let me know when you want to come, I’ll take you. Honest.”
Hunter nodded to her explanation. They didn’t think they’d have to act silly to look silly, their classmates had reminded them of that way too often. They admired how confident she sounded and how she didn’t think looking silly was a problem. “That’s amazing. I’d just humiliate myself right away and not feel good about it. It’s good that you don’t sound like you care about being silly or not.” They said. “The masterminds behind the scene. Like you.” Hunter nodded their head. They had to bite on their lower lip before summing the courage to ask their next question. “Can-Can I have your number?”
