It is not that bad to use advanced technology for our mundane tasks; however, we should always think of the things we need to prioritize. Time is gold, as what the very popular saying states. It may, perhaps, sound cliche but that is truly a meaningful phrase. Nowadays, we should focus on the things we NEED to use rather than those we just WANT. Thus, it is better for us to manage and use our time in a very well manner. Although we can explore things by the use of technology, let us still not forget that we can have our happiness by means of having great experiences in the realm of reality and out of technology.

Reality of Philippine Democracy

The flag was raised up above all

Supposed it means we wouldn’t fall

Yet never thought it’d be this way

There, fantasy flips to thy dismay.

By the Americans, we were chained

By the Spaniards, we were claimed

And when heroes fought for liberty

Can we, Filipinos, freely flee?

Enslaved by our innocence

Puppet of those who had omnipotence

We thought we found "independence"

Yet our fellow Filipino made its absence.

It wasn’t just those with different nationality

But also, those who lived in our own country

Are the ones that broke our liberty

For, perhaps, an amount of money.

What is worse than the conquerors,

Are those considered manipulators

Not of with dissimilar face

But, to thy dismay, with similar race.

Though free from Americans, Spaniards, and all,

Still oligarchs came to make us fall.

They still held us by the neck,

Barely breathing and wrecked.

As thy thought we are already free,

I denied our democracy.

Yes, we have it, as you can feel,

But it ain’t ever been that real.

Before it was a newspaper, nowadays, it is a phone. Not only kids but also those who are at the age of 30s, 40s, or 50s tend to use technology-based gadgets. As the world changes its phase, people also change their ways of learning, listening, and perceiving life. The only thing we should assure is to control ourselves when it comes to this change. If we change to use technology, we also have to be informed about the advantages and disadvantages of it; thus, we would be able to manage and prevent ourselves from getting enslaved by it.

It is profoundly evident that kids nowadays tend to use their gadgets for entertainment and perhaps, face in front of it for hours unlike before whereas kids used to enjoy their childhood days by common Filipino games. Indeed, in this point of time, slowly and unconsciously, it is becoming an excruciating system of a human’s life. Nonetheless, as we are the ones doing it, we can also change and break the chain of this system by bringing out happiness and entertainment in our lives by the most natural way; without being enslaved by technology.

FACTUAL OPINION: Filipino Diaspora

Around the world, it is very visible that being an OFW is considered a trend. In fact, the outcome gathered in the survey conducted by Philippine Statistics Authority shows that the number of OFWs who worked abroad at any time during the period of April to September 2016 was estimated at 2.2 million. 97.5% of them have the existing work contract and 2.5%, on the latter, worked overseas without it. Personally, I think this is a disturbing matter and the mere fact that this trend is present and continuously becoming a trend only shows that poverty existence in the Philippines is certainly excruciating. Poverty will probably leave Filipinos with no choice and will then be the factor for them to be somewhat forced to work abroad in order to sustain their necessities. It has been observed in the same survey that among the things OFWs usually send back home or in the Philippines, cash or money is the main thing. Cash sent home is about 146 billion pesos, cash brought home is around 45.7 billion pesos, and remittances in kind, however, revolve around 11.1 billion pesos. Ultimately, OFWs tend to send cash, I think as it is the most important and is the common goal they want to earn as they leave our country. In my opinion, this issue of Filipino diaspora as we may call, however, is somehow an orthodox matter when it comes to the Philippine economic growth. National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) in 2012 stated that OFWs’ cash remittances are very important and that 64% of OFWs send money through banks which is a factor for the resilience of Philippines. The way I see it, it is a pure paradox on how OFWs give benefits to our economic development yet poverty still remains to be the reason for the longevity of Filipino diaspora, when in fact, economic growth must be one of the great factors for a country not to encounter poverty. In this case, Filipino diaspora should have been stopped or at least lessened. However, the record shows the other way around. POEA stated that there is a 7.5% increase rate of hiring abroad particularly to those in the Household services on year 2015. In my point of view, other countries is in favour of this as they really like the way how Filipino works especially that we know how to speak in English, we are kind, and really have skills. It is good to know that they do see us like that but Filipino diaspora will also not leave the fact that it is an issue to be addressed, after all, not all OFWs receive proper treatment in other countries and that they risk their lives when they don't even have to. I personally like to have our countrymen working inside our country because to earn money and live together with their loved ones are definitely better than to take any risk.
