Alright, this was hard, i had 1-4 immediately, and then 11 characters I was thinking over for the fifth spot.
5: Tanya von Degurechaff from Youjo Senki. She's just a lot of fun. God hates her specifically, she doesn't understand how to communicate. She has like 6 layers of character development, and a couple warcrimes to realize she likes her friends.
4: Hot Pants from JJBA part 7: Steel Ball Run. Hot pants is my goat. She's the greatest. A nun with enough regret to strangle her, is in a top spot in a horse race. I love her relationship with Diego. I really don't know what it is. They fill the same role of antagonist to ally pipeline, and it feels like they should just be using eachother, but they actually seemed to somewhat care in that final fight. Hot pants is the goat, and the only reason most of Sbr even happened.
3: Sita from Code Adam. I have a couple posts about her already so I won't say much. She's so screwed. Nothing goes right and she's scared of everything. But she's strong in other ways, and feels so deeply.
2: Sete from Code Adam. My current pfp. I love her entire design. I love how she's also scared, so scared that she doesn't do anything. I love her making the decision to decide. I love her child self saying "but atleast you've returned to your body at long last." Shes just so peak. Read Code Adam by Atterozen. The characters are all so good. Im begging.
1: Ethylene from Black Horda. Wow my top 3 girls are the 3 characters ive ever made posts about, who could have guessed. Ethy is just my favorite. Of all time. I cant even really explain why. I love her apathy. I love how she's a monster with a kill on sight order, for hundreds of years, and she just doesn't care. Peak character

5: 9s from NieR: Automata. I have him in last for recency bias, and because i really like the story as a whole, and not sure if that's bleeding over. But i like the way he sucks and falls apart, and how obsessive he is. Insanely fun character, had me constantly screaming No at the screen cause i could see what was happening.
4: Raiden from Metal Gear Solid 2. Honestly, although ive only played upto mgs3, raiden is my favorite. He wants to be a hero so badly, and tries his absolute best. And then hes betrayed, and the past he's running from rears its ugly head. And he nearly falls apart. But he doesn't, he succeededs, and moves on with a new goal.
3: Edward Kenway from Assassins Creed IV. I love how awful he is. It feels like every time he tries to do good, life knocks him down. And any time he starts doing bad, life hands him the keys to the car. Dude is so tragic it sucks so bad. I want to be his friend, but all his friends always die.
2: Link from Ocarina of Time. This is a nostalgia pick. I love OoT so much. I love how hes unhinged and steals a horse, or gets engaged to a princess. I love how every single part of his entire life is a tragedy. I love how the fierce diety looks exactly like him. I love that he lives alone, and dies alone. And nobody remembers him.
1: Yi from Nine Sols. Number 1 awful guy. Sucks so badly. The worst. Hes so great. Has caused not 1 but 2 genocides. The game is about him killing his coworker and he treats them like coworkers. Meaning he kills them very brutally and doesn't really care what excuses they make. Hes also very tragic.

I don't even have anything to say about NieR Automata that hasn't been said before I'm not smart enough to have new thoughts about it.. I just love it.... it's so stupid that it's a video game about video games. I love it. I love the meta commentary and the tragic hopefulness of it. I love that it makes you play it five times just to see the whole story, forcing you to live out the time loop in some sense. It always ends like this. I love that 2B tries not to love to spare herself the pain but she can't help it. I love that the box art is a huge spoiler, such a concise encapsulation of the story. I love that I finished the game and immediately wanted to replay it. Why would I want to replay it?? It always ends like this. But even though I know how the story goes I still love it and I want to hear it again, and even though it's tragic I still want to remember the parts I love again....
And most of all I love that it's not even the good one in the series. Yoko Taro when I fuckign get you
That feeling when you really like the characters, but the friend who recced them to you, loves suffering and is a creature of habit. So you know they're gonna die awfully.
I was right. It was so awful. But so good. He has 10/10 taste. Always makes me suffer and leaves me thinking about characters for weeks.
