the sea, the vast interconnected system of earth's salty, oceanic waters, has been traveled and explored since prehistory - an essential aspect of human trade, travel, mineral extraction, and power generation. its importance has affected human culture from the early sea gods to hyperrealist marine art, and inspiring music ranging from shanties to classical orchestral works. the sea has also been an important influence throughout electronic artist jérôme chassagnard's life. and being a passionate aquanaut, he devised these four lucid compositions devoted to these powerful, mystic, even sometimes terrifying waters.

on this ep the oceanic sensations jérôme experiences are musically transcribed, both as an inspiration and through the sound itself, as many of sonic ingredients were extracted from aquatic sources.  manifold tones from sequenced variations of drips to the mighty breaking of waves have been embedded in a mesmeric vortex of ambient depth and provocative idm precision.

deeply atmospheric and forceful at the same time, 'sea' shows the most different facets of an element which will never forfeit its important and fascination. highly recommended.

the 1660 'indemnity and oblivion act‘, was an act of parliament in england, a general pardon for anyone who had committed crimes during the civil war and interregnum. this act symbolically gave monolog’s second release on hymen records it’s title, as the man behind the project had to suffer the passing of people who were very close to him. the pain of guilt for not being able to save them, for the sincerity and incomprehension that led to early death and downfall - even simply for still being alive himself led to a personal crisis. but where there is guilt, there is the possibility of forgiveness, and forgiveness often comes through pain - this album can be seen as the soundtrack to a new and important lesson learned.

'indemnity and oblivion‘ is a continuation as well as a refinement of monolog’s musical concept. while re-discovering the joy and skill of playing electric guitar he also rediscovered his entombed metal roots and married them to his profound electronic production experience with a new deep voice. meeting metal singer and songwriter mathias lodmalm (cemetary, sundown) by chance was a great coincidence and led to a collaboration for one track of this album, exploring a new terra in music and expression. another inspiring cooperation of importance for making seemingly unrealizable ideas possible was the one with dean rodell (machinecode, underhill) who inspired new practices on this album with a fascinatingly different approach. the third significant contribution was made on the tracks 'skeletons are watching me‘ and 'agenda‘, born in synergy with film director raphael dingé and dancers thaïs lebas and deborah darritchon. the collective creativity between these artists and monolog marked a special crossover of art and resulted not only in these two tracks but also in an enthralling video clip - a perfect mindset about sinister tales and dark vibes.

metal, dub, drum and bass, breakcore are perfect types of music to use for regaining strength and force you to lift reality, therefore these styles can be examined under a certain therapeutical aspect, especially when this album’s backdrop is understood. 'indemnity and oblivion‘ is a gripping ride of mood and sound where brute force symbiotically join forces with fragile melodic beauty and linear dry beat punches take turns with wide reverberated spaces. a demanding, even sometimes exhausting musical conglomerate - rough and not pleasant but with the ability to trigger high bursts of energy that will grant you a new experience once you engaged with it.

this album is fuel for hard times, when atheists repent and walk the desert without the comfort of gods, carried by will and the love of brothers and sisters knowing that musical invention and creativity is a must for reaching a new safe haven of thought.

signalstoerung is not only one of the founding members of both the german artist collective ‘global noise movement’ and ‘adventurous music’, but also creates audiovisual events, dj-sets, podcasts, and since the mid 1990s, his own music. with his debut release 's' he has created a new and different form of electronic music, which is a result of long-standing preoccupation with the pureness of stretched sounds, low bpm rates and the aesthetic value of noise.

this album should be viewed not only as a collection of tracks, but as a coherent opus divided into individual, tightly coiled segments. although signalstoerung's sonic work is clearly unique, references to mick harris, mechthild von leusch or the raster-noton label might be given. on 's' he delivers a fascinating and mesmerizing combination of repetitive music with slow dub beats, melodic leanings and abstract minimalism. a great arena of sublime and disturbing sounds and treatments where each single tone keeps together the fragile construction and each element is precisely placed in intensity, void and volume.

if the ability to dance had been given to circuits, the slowly eroding continual rhythms of 's' combined with its sparse and menacing abstract sequences would be their favourite input. highly recommended.

the 14 tracks on mnemonic's eleventh full length album 'aversionen' showcase clearly structured and solid detailed lines that hark back to the roots of the project which have been less overt on its recent releases. 'aversionen' is striking as well as versatile, with algorithms which appear neither hazy nor fragile, in fact they selectively focus on it‘s essence where confusing shapes become subtle analog scenes. intelligent entangled beats join hands with intensive arranged patterns while melancholy melodies infuse with faded grey nuances in apparent dissonance.

mnemonic was founded by michael belletz and sebastian schulz in 1997 starting as an electro-industrial influenced project in which vocals and electronics had equal rights. after two self-released albums their sound became strictly instrumental and appreciably changed into idm / electronica which made them a name to an entirely different audience. in 2009 sebastian left the project, and michael has been exclusively responsible for its music ever since, a fact that also led to another style alteration towards a more clearly structured analog / electro sound.

with this album mnemonic has designed a a catchy, modern retro sound that presents a wide array of carefully constructed tunes and extensive soundscapes, reflecting a new stopover of the project's journey.

since their foundation in 1995 somatic responses are an open-minded project concerning the vast array of contemporary electronic music - 'complex dislocated & broken beats, distorted intelligent constructions, fascinating sonic structures, force and sweetness intertwined' is the description the brothers john and paul healy made to define their sound, and this description is still valid. although a unique s.r. style is always visible, there never was any reserve involving various influences in their work. this stylistic care free attitude is an important element of the 'pattern seeking' album which was released in 2017 on cd and digital format. the digital-only release 'pattern finding' which is available now was recorded during the same period and might be seen as the second part of a virtual double album. however, compared with the predecessor a subtle distinction is visible. on 'pattern finding' predominantly strict beat-oriented tunes can be found wherein straightforward fierce beats carry intelligently placed atmospheric soundscapes which force the listener to move. however this release is completed with two dark, beautiful ambient tunes. a great addendum to an outstanding album - after listening to ‚pattern finding‘ you have to agree the quest was successful.

all through lifetime everyone of us has to experience many changes, good or evil, which reflect on our lives, our inner self, our outward appearance and our environment. at the age of 20 you have the face you were born with - at the age of 40 you have the 'face you deserve'. that phrase adapted from a graphic novel by ann nocenti became the title of displacer's recent album whose inspiration is spring-fed from most different tempers and thoughts between spiritual relaxation and the difficulties of overcome obstacles.

for this release mike morton a.k.a. displacer chose befriended artists' projects snowbeasts (raab codec and elizabeth virosa), slipdrive (keith baker), l'ombre (stephen sawyer) and brien hindman (a member of the duo colony collapse disorder) to collaborate on four tracks, and their contributions between experimental synth sounds and bits of idm / downtempo fit in perfectly well.

each track on 'the face you deserve' is a result of reflectiveness and second thought, transformed into dense, beat-oriented compositions of steadiness and power. the abundance of musical variety and embedded sound snippets beyond the rhythmic framework is often visible after repeated listening and habituation to the bass-saturated grooves.

with 'the face you deserve' displacer presents a work of contemporary electronica at its very best where beauty, sadness, tranquilization and power brilliantly coexist. highly recommended.

besides information about live and dj activities, there isn’t much to be found on subskan mastermind jean-marc polet. there were rumors about him working in a factory and using pure industrial samples for his artistic work - whether these rumors are true or not, they seem completely legitimate while listening to subskan's sound treatments. after two well received releases over the course of more than ten years, he has redefined himself artistically and personally - years in which he literally recorded hundreds of tracks coming to terms with most different aspects of his identity. 'ambidextrous asylums' is the final result of a precise selection around a deliberate setup and sonic coherence as well as a re-introduction of the artist subskan and the person jean-marc.

subskan's intention is expressing himself musically without any stylistic boundaries and classifications - placing great importance on the music speaking for itself and it not only describing the artist's moods and feelings, but also shepherding the individual listener's own journey into his inner core. this music stays in your mind long after it has faded away. this album's most diversified song structure permanently changes between feelings and tempers without any rest - each track transports into another mental status from psychiatric dark sadness and gentle positive joy or hope to desperate bedevilment. the music on 'ambidextrous asylums' touches a lot of different styles between beat-oriented intelligent dance music, melancholy-saturated electronica and abstract breakcore structures. a diligent use of instrumentation and samples plus the precise, clear production make this opus an outstanding release which re-establishes subskan back in full shape after years of self-discovery.

although a unique s.r. style is always visible, there never was any reserve involving various influences in their work. this stylistic care free attitude is an important element of the 'pattern seeking' release where the healy brothers include many sonic directions from lush ambient to pounding techno, catchy electro and abstract breaks into one diversified and enthralling album - a coexistence of syncopated harshness and enigmatic ambience.

the main basis for the sound sources on the twelve tracks is a return to tactile methods, generally meaning the use of outboard synths and modular gear which always is a big haptic difference compared to computer-based production. however 'pattern seeking' is not a pure 'analogue artefact', as a computer was still used for beats, processing and sequencing. by mixing both types of technology s.r. are able to create an all round diverse sound amalgamation.

this album can be seen as a transboundary statement against self-made and unnecessary borders - passing these is unmistakably possible, as somatic responses perfectly illustrate.

with 'chansons de geste' ben lukas boysen a.k.a. hecq presents a very personal release, conceived as a memorial and dedication to bygone events and individuals. the basic sources for the eleven haunting tracks were original tape recordings boysen and his family members made decades ago for private use, ranging from piano etudes to classical works by composers like j.s. bach and johannes brahms. it was hecq's intention to restore, to revive and to re-arrange these basic sources for the existing release in a condensed and unusual way. each tape was digitized to hard disc, loops and patches were extracted from this sound pool, and the collection was recorded on a reel-to-reel tape recorder. the tapes were taken and played back inside a church where the natural reverb of the location was added and used as the master recording.

musically, 'chansons de geste' is a captivating assemblage of mesmeric ambient works where the natural hissing from the ancient tape recordings interpolate with orchestral classical textures and slight electronic manipulations. the hypnotic loops and dots transfer an atmosphere of grandeur and melancholia to those who are aligned to the album's concept as well as to the unprejudiced listener.

'chansons de geste' is hecq's examination and refurbishment of a rich, touching and important time's distillate - an aural inheritance of activities and events which only remain to exist as a memory. highly recommended.

sometimes if you are lucky enough you don't have to go far from the towns to find a pitch-black sky overhead with a blaze of stars on a fine clear night. this amazing natural spectacle was the main inspiration for the fifth album of french artist jérôme chassagnard who composed each of the eight tracks during nighttime. it was also jérôme's intention that this release should be listened to while watching the manifold stellar constellations which will hopefully appear before the listener's eyes.

the sound on 'music for a starlit night' is focused on the ambient and modern classical side of jérôme chassagnard, as could be already heard on his early compositions, enriched with a stimulant dose of electronica. an intelligent mixture of atmospheric dreamy quietness and energetic beat-driven intensity carried by intense, clear keyboard textures and melancholic chord layers.

a beautiful bewitching album of multi-faceted surfaces and depths, recommended to all of those seeking a pleasant listening experience while looking into space.

frank riggio and hymen records present the third and final part of the ‘psychexcess’ trilogy: 'eternalism', supplemented with the additional album 'jadis'. this long-term project, designed to be similar to a three movie series in aural format is about birth, life & death. it is related to space & films, and also inspired by the concepts of the time & the psyche. all of these influences are connected to each other and driven by sound experimentations.

after the primary topics of birth and life in the trilogy's first two parts, 'eternalism' deals with death as a truly closing subject which includes an interpretation of the afterlife and the separation of mind and body. although this album is subdivided into nine parts, it was conceived to be treated as one long track lasting for one hour and nine minutes and which should be listened to without interruption. an important part for the conception of this record is also that it was produced continuously, from track 1 to track 9, as a spontaneous, improvised process within nine months.

just like a well-concepted film score 'eternalism' offers an atmospheric buildup and captivating arcs of suspense, painting a storyline of deep darkness and unsettling confusion. the basis of cinematic ambiance and sound design is masterly connected with profound rhythm components and disturbing collages while modern classical textures and instrumentation play a prominent role to achieve a balance between the organic and the electronic sound spectrum.

a coherent, deep and highly sophisticated release especially for late night listening sessions which is intended to work as a carrier for a journey into unknown places - maybe even into eternity.
