Artist and lover of nature; MS student studying pollination ecology. However, this is less about me and more so about stimulating an appreciation for science, sustainability, and all that revolves around the natural world. I sometimes draw: http://www.allysahallett.tumblr.com "We need another and a wiser, perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. Remote from universal nature and living by complicated artifice, man in civilization surveys the creature through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnified and the whole image in distortion. We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with the extensions of senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings, they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of earth".
Saffron, one of the most expensive spices, is formed from the stigma (part of the female reproductive structures of a flower) of the saffron crocus, Crocus sativus. There are only three stigmas on a given flower, meaning many flowers must be planted to make saffron production profitable. The stigmas can be used fresh, but are more often dried and ground to make a powder.
I just ordered 45 bulbs :) Not only am I looking forward to their beautiful blooms, but I plan to harvest for my own cooking and for gifts for friends and family.
The material has been hand dyed with turmeric, tea and onions skins. Then hand printed with lino cuts to represent the larvae, workers, drones and the single queen bee. The quilt was then then pieced, quilted and bound by hand.
The bees are arranged in a rough imitation of the structure of a hive: the queen is surrounded by workers, each drone and larvae are attended by their own workers, while others form a circle to represent a “bee dance” and some stand guard at the entrance to the hive.
garden2mabelly: I left a bunch of ground cherries on top of the soil on one bed, check out how the berry decomposed leaving the seeds inside their own cool package.
cdnpgn: Winter sore throat “tea”- In a jar combine lemon slices, organic honey and sliced ginger. Close jar and put it in the fridge, it will form into a “jelly”. To serve- spoon jelly into mug and pour boiling water over it. Store in fridge 2-3 months.
'I felt resistance up to a certain moment, but after a while I let it go and surrendered to the experience. I think I must have entered a state of trance at some point. I started to feel completely empty inside and entered a state of complete freedom. Towards the end I only heard the beating of my heart and my own breathing.'
