What Silver didn't notice is Gear Village was running low on just about everything - supplies were there, but they needed extensive work to remove V-Corp tricks. Life was still hard here.
"This isn't fair... if it weren't for the Red Demons in the big castle I wouldn't have to stay hungry pulling poison out of every bit of food! There has to be someone who can beat the Red Demons, like in those stories Emily tells sometimes! I know what I have to do. I'm going to go into the big building, take one of the Demons' metal birds, and fly it to find help!"
"But that's dangerous! And what if Miss Emily finds out? She'll be so mad for sure!"
Little did the two kids know, the very woman they feared was right nearby, too close for comfort. She heard every word. Even busy, she could finish up her work quickly and come up behind the two almost soundlessly. The air crackled in the way in only did when she was upset, a static fuzz surrounding her like an aura. It made their hair stand on end.
"YIKES! Uh hi Emily! I'm, uh, just going exploring!"
Runa starts backing away toward an edge where there's a cloud river beneath that can be followed into V-Corp's factory.
Her tone, lacking as it was, left little room for debate. She didn't believe Runa. Briefly, her eyes flicked to the river, and though all her arms were folded behind her back, they were tense.
"Yeah! I do that all the time! It's my "thing!""
"Runa I think she knows-"
Runa abruptly jumps back, trying to reach the edge for the current. Emily lunges, having been anticipating that, and grabs Runa by her shirt.
"I don't think so, young lady. You are not going to the Concrete Citadel. The adults are handling it, and I know it takes a while, but until all is well, you must stay here and out of danger. Understand?"
Emily turns to Lumie only to hear a splash. She doesn't even get a single goddamn word out - barely gets to open her mouth - before she hears the splash and whips right back around to Runa. Or, to where Runa used to be. Lumie can visibly see the restraint it's taking not to start cursing.
"Runa, you get BACK HERE RIGHT NOW-"
Runa is already swimming up the cloud current to where a raft she made once is. She unhitches it and starts paddling up the current toward the Concrete Citadel.
"Lumie, get back home immediately. I will grab Runa."
Without waiting to see if the kid listened - which was probably a bad idea, but oh well - Emily starts running alongside the river to reach the Mimiga. She's reluctant to use her webs, as always, but that's a good thing- Runa is in dense cloud-water or whatever these rivers are made of, she could drown if rendered immobile. Runa's raft floats down the current, and slips through the gate just as it closes, forcing Emily to have to ask for it to be opened again. Runa does see Emily, and tries to paddle faster. Emily skids to a stop just before the gate.
"YOU-!! Are not. Following. SAFETY CHECKS. Disembark immediately before security finds out what you are doing!"
As she speaks, she's both filing a request for the gate to once again be opened, and also looking around the entire area from where she stands to find a way inside. If she can vault the gate, it won't be ideal, but she'll make it. To Runa's chagrin and Emily's gratitude, filing a request is much simpler than in Gear Station- it's as easy as telling the Watchers on the gates to open it. The issue is finding a route along the "bank" to follow Runa on- without, y'know, getting wet.
Emily sends a quick thank-you and edges along the cloud-water until she can run again without wading through it, and when she does, she's FAST. She's apparently given up on words at the moment, knowing no amount of demands will get through to a determined child, and instead puts all her energy into the chase. Runa's raft takes her to a bank with a massive concrete monolith in view- V-Corp's Factory. She shudders briefly, before leaping off into the low branches of the Jungle- she's a light child and the branches are firm enough for one leap each at least.
Emily curses under her breath, quiet enough for Runa not to hear. With a quick check to make sure her Pokemon are with her, she follows her into the Jungle. None of them are quite suited for a person's retrieval, but they can help her fight if something happens. Eventually, Runa's path hits a massive metal pylon, which she climbs up. The pylon connects to a massive metal structure on the bottom - the Concrete Citadel, AKA VermilineCorp's Skystream Jungle Factory. Runa looks around for a way in, and eventually spots a maintenance walkway. When she lands on it, she spots Emily.
It's a quick realization, that Emily won't be able to follow up there. Not very easily. Not on her own. But she has her friends with her, and she lets one of them out. The whirring of gears fills the air, and she doesn't have to give a verbal command before hopping on and simply pointing. Tick's base Speed stat isn't the highest, but it gets her up to the walkway much faster than she would've otherwise been able to.
"Miss Emily... I'm sorry, it's the only way!"
Emily hissed the words through gritted teeth. Her patience was thin, though she knew children were prone to doing stupid things out of some sense of martyrdom. This was why she was never the one to deal with them back at-
At that moment along hobbles... WOW that is one messed-up Shifter. Emily's thought process was cut off by the appearance of the Shifter. No more time for that. She landed on the walkway and charged. Like hell she would let Runa get hurt. The Shifter trips over herself trying to recoil, and twitches in pain as she lands. Her body spasms with pain and fear.
"...that's... a Shifter! She looks hurt! I don't think she'll make it long in here... if nothing else, if we help her then coming here was worth it for that!"
"...I am... your service... How can I be of servant?"
Emily comes to an abrupt stop in front of Runa, one arm out to separate the child and the Shifter, another on her Pokeballs, and the last two prepared to throw their hands. Even so, she does notice the same thing Runa does. After a bit of consideration, she speaks. If the Shifter can answer a question, maybe she can be negotiated with.
She notices the looks on their faces.
"I got it wrong again didn't I?"
She abruptly starts sobbing.
"I can't be perfect I'll never be perfect!!!!!"
Emily repeats the number under her breath, making sure she heard it right. The sudden onslaught of tears, however, makes her flinch back and instinctively look to her left, like there might be someone there who can help her with The Emotions.
"Umm... Hey, you don't have to be perfect. Not with us. We're not V-Corp."
"Yeah! We're different! We'll like you how you are!"
"Really! So, um... ... ... Pssst! Emily! It could just be me, but that number doesn't sound like a person's name. We should give her one of her own!"
"No, you're right. The choice is up to her, though."
She stands up straight, faces the Shifter, and speaks.
"How would you like to help us with something? If you can't, that is alright. But in return, we will help you as well. You will not be V-Corp's servant any more if we are successful."
"... I can... help? Even if I'm not perfect?"
Something bright appears in the Shifter's eyes. Emily's smile softens up- it never left, but before it was sharp and dangerous. Now it's almost kind.
"Wonderful. Before that, though... A number isn't a very nice thing to call someone by. Do you have anything else we could use for you? You are a person like us, after all."
The Shifter looks at her, brain firing all cylinders and also none of them. She seems to be struggling to even comprehend being anything but a possession as an option, let alone having her own name.
"...I don't think she does..."
"That's alright. You do not have to choose right now. But may we call you something of our own choosing, in the meantime? It will not be a number."
The Shifter nods quickly.
"Ok Cherish! Lead the way! We need to find one of those massive flying things the Demons use."
It takes her a minute, but Cherish understands.
She leads them from the walkway into the main building, where several beings looking like young women with pink hair, all in the same red uniform, move about in orderly lines to various stations and rooms of the Factory, watched all the while by guards with weapons. Harsh fluorescent lights light the concrete corridors our heroes look down from a raised platform upon. Emily follows along with speed but not haste, keeping an eye on everything she can. Upon seeing all the identical women, she stops and puts a hand on Runa and Cherish's shoulders to signal them to stop too. She makes a motion with her other hands, seeming to briefly forget that neither knows sign language- or, at least, not the dialect she uses. When this does hit her, she opts to whisper as quietly as she can instead.
It seems so, as one of the guards stops one who doesn't look exactly identical, throws her to the ground, and hits her with a purple liquid, which causes her to become a formless pink blob.
"And when you get back up you better have that face right or it'll be more next time!"
Emily visibly winces, almost scowling if not for her permanent smile. She quickly motions for the other two to keep going, with a finger to her lips in a "shhh" motion. Incredibly reluctantly, Runa lets this go unpunished. Cherish leads them next into a large receiving room where Shifters carry various cargoes, each worse than the last- captured Pals, dark ichor, and worse. Whenever any of them fall, the Guards are right there to administer swift and fierce shocks with the polearms they wield. Cherish shudders witnessing a Shifter get a particularly brutal shock.
Unfortunately for everyone but the guards, punishing them would just put the mission in jeopardy. So the three continue, with Emily intentionally averting her eyes - with great difficulty - to resist the urge to let her Pokemon loose on the V-Corp employees. It nags at a dark familiarity in her mind. She doesn't have time to examine it right now, though, because they still have to find a ship. With one of her arms, she gently blocks Cherish's view of the scene below, and motions for the two girls to keep going.
Following the supply lines reveals the Shifters to be unloading several cargo freighters, in a hangar with many other ships. Runa points, and at the end of the hall is a smaller ship with no guards around it. Emily's eyes lock on what Runa is indicating almost instantly. She inches forward, one hand on a Pokeball, constantly looking around to make sure they aren't being seen. To Cherish and Runa, she makes a little "slow down" motion, just in case either one of them were thinking of running for the ship. Cherish can't go fast due to her misshapen leg, but Runa was about to bolt. The slower approach was the right one as there is a single but well-armed guard in front of the ship. Emily puts a finger to her lips, making direct eye contact with both the girls so they all know to stay quiet.
Making her way as close to the ship as possible, she presses a button on one of her Pokeballs, allowing a long, slippery, eel-like creature to flash into existence next to her.
Tiny, her beloved first partner, leans over the edge, flexing its fangs at the sight of the guard below.
Then, at Emily's signal, it dives.
The guard, despite being well-armed with chemical weapons likely created by Adieme, was not expecting to have to use them, apparently only here to ensure yet-to-arrive Shifters do their jobs of maintaining Adieme's personal vessel. Talk about a flabbergasting! With a distraction made, the gang piles on the ship. The controls are futuristic but made with a lot of clear corporate corner cutting, so it might take a bit to figure them out. Runa looks back at the guard brawling with the Pokemon.
"I hate those demons! I wanna give em a taste of my rang-rang! I sharpened it yesterday!"
But then she has a thought that Emily has not known her to have until now, one of the only reasons why she didn't want to take on Runa as a "Guardian-in-Training."
"...but that would put Cherish and Lumie in danger, huh?"
While Tiny wraps the guard up in her eely mass and takes advantage of her objectively terrifying mouth to scare them, Emily dashes across near-silently and stops right in front of the controls. She's about to tell Runa not to do anything- when that thought comes out of her mouth. Slightly stunned but proud, Emily smiles for real and nods.
"That is correct. Therefore, we should save proper revenge for when casualties can be minimized. Come over here, lets see if we can figure out these controls."
No matter what the purpose, vehicles are vehicles. The common elements seem oddly familiar to Emily, and the ones that aren't are surprisingly able to be worked by Cherish.
"Whoa! Cherish how did you do that?"
"Joined with her. She knew."
Cherish points at a Shifter covered in chemical burns - Adieme's personal slave.
Emily does not say anything else as her hands fly across the controls, stuttering only occasionally as she reaches for something that isn't there or looks to her left side, only to realize no one is actually manning that side and she has to do it herself. Finally, as the doors are closing, one hand that's been holding Tiny's Pokeball this whole time flies out into the rapidly shrinking opening and recalls the Eelektross, leaving only a slim margin for error that she clears like it's been practiced.
"Alright. Shall we be off, then?"
Cherish guides Emily to setting course for an area marked as hostile to V-Corp: Valua, wherever that is.
"We'll be back... There's gotta be someone there who can help."
"However this turns out, I'll make sure you never go back there. You'll never have to worry about being punished for not being perfect ever again."
The Shifter's face lights up as she struggles to process the joy and hope she's feeling.
