He walks into the room, distressed and frowning. "Can I ask you something?"
Grantaire looks up, sensing that something isn’t quite right.
"You can ask me anything," he replies.
He sighs shakily, and crosses his arms in front of him. “Do you ever- have dreams where…we’re together and about to be shot? You’re- holding my hand and asking permission for something and before I can even respond we’re dead.”
Grantaire holds his breath. Maybe he has had a similar dream. There are men with guns, they have Enjolras cornered... Grantaire asks Enjolras if he would allow him to die next to him -- as if he's not worthy of such an honor.
But it's just a dream. A coincidence that they have similar dreams -- but hey, they could be completely different. Grantaire can't see Enjolras' dreams, and Enjolras can't see Grantaire's dreams. He exhales.
"--I don't usually remember my dreams."

The Musain was haunted.
No one believed him, but he knew. It was hard to ignore the cries of pain, the distant echo of gunshots, and the occasional glimpse of a tortured face... but Grantaire found a way. He discovered that his damned connection to the spirit world could be silenced if he consumed copious amounts of liquor -- so he did. He refused to go to a meeting at the Musain without being at least pleasantly buzzed. It was even better if he was completely shitfaced, but he feared death too much to risk alcohol poisoning every night.
Grantaire had struggled with visions of the dead for as long as he could remember. His earliest memory involved him curled up in bed, the blankets pulled up to his chin as he stared at a mysterious, translucent man standing in his doorway. The frequency of his paranormal encounters varied tremendously. As a child, he could have two or three experiences a week, then go several months without so much as a peep; unfortunately, as he grew older, the encounters became more and more regular until the cynic struggled with separating who was living and who was a manifestation of the deceased.
He turned to liquor. It quieted the connection he shared with the spirits and gave him some form of "peace." Of course, being drunk all the time had it's obvious downsides: it was detrimental to his health, it annoyed all those around him, it effected his daily life... but it was better than losing his sense of reality.
Unfortunately for this meeting at the Musain, Grantaire was completely sober. He had made a stupid bet with Joly and Bossuet that he could get through a meeting sober, as if to "prove to Enjolras that he had willpower" and blahblahblah. Grantaire regretted the bet with every fiber of his being, and he was not above going back on his word. He kept his gaze down, trying to avoiding the faces floating around him, and he tried to block out the voices... but not even Enjolras' passionate, fiery speech could drown out the noise.
It was going to be a long meeting.
"I'm going to eat healthy today," I lied to myself as I eat French fries with cheese and sour cream and a soda for dinner.
oh my fUCKING GODDDDD--
I desperately need an AU where Grantaire is a paranormal medium and he drinks constantly to keep spirits from communicating with him.

“How many fingers can you see?” ((I bet R and Christine is a hella rad contrast--))
"—Hmm?"
The Soprano did a double-take of the stranger whom she opened her eyes to see; alas, falling from the stage of the Opéra Populaire had not been her intent, and Christine winced when she rubbed her forehead. “Three?… no, five?”
“I, uh— yes, I fear I have… fallen from the stage,” a pause as the girl blinked, surveyed surroundings that came into focus. Confusion still muddled her features as she sat there, rubbed a spot on her head that radiated with ache.
"Monsieur, it is…" what day was it? “I am unsure. Oh, oh, no—!”
Grantaire glanced up to the edge of the stage. It was--... quite a ways to fall. Just as he expected, the girl had no clue what day it was. The drunk's guess -- concussion, but what did he know?
"You should probably see a doctor," he suggested, standing and offering his hand, "Can you stand? If you feel lightheaded, tell me."
