I’d like to take a moment to talk about something. I’ve met people throughout my life, and even here on the internet, who have created a prison of their own and use that as an excuse not to serve the Lord.
Many people believe because of their anxiety or any kind of mental illness they can’t serve the Lord. Others, because of physical injuries and disabilities also think they can’t serve the Lord as “properly” as someone who’s without disabilities. Many times we create a prison of our own. We must remember Christ has set us free from all of our chains, so those who are staying in that prison of their own imagination are staying there because they’re choosing to, after all the doors are wide open for servitude.
Remember when God first called Moses to speak to His people of Israel? Moses’ excuse was that he “can’t speak well.” Yet God reminded him that He makes us all, and He gets to use use all for His glory. If Moses was a poor speaker, it didn’t matter - the mighty God said, “I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say.” By extension, God is sufficient for us, no matter what real or imagined inadequacies we have.
We must pray to have our eyes opened to realize there’s no longer any chains so we can enjoy the fellowship and friendship of other believers in the body of Christ. How can we beat this? Ask our Father in Heaven to heal you. Ask Him to give you the strength to seek out a medical professional (psychiatrist) so you can be prescribed some medication to cope with it. Hopefully in time you’ll be healed and you won’t even need that medication anymore, or you’ll be free of that medication once you get your resurrected body at your death. Just know that anyone can beat anything with His help.
Those trapped in such conditions can still accomplish much from within the confines of their own prison. Look at the Apostle Paul for instance. So much of the New Testament was written by Paul while he was in jail. What is known as the “Prison Epistles” are the books of Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.
Being in prison didn’t stop Paul from preaching and neither should it stop you. Keep reading His Word, accept the Lord in your life and keep on preaching the Good News. How can you preach the good news if you are in prison? The same way Paul did, but with a more modern touch. Paul reached out to believers through his letters and you can reach out the lost through the internet. You can share the Good News with your next door neighbor, with the people you go to school with, your coworkers, and so on. God places each one of us right where He wants us to be. You can share Jesus anywhere.
Enjoy this time in your own prison as you are able to read His Word constantly, listen to online sermons of great pastors, study His Word, praise and pray to Him daily, and if possible donate money to worthy causes (such as Samaritan’s Purse). Being locked up has its perks, as you’ll be able to dedicate your time to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and strength during this time of recovery. But you should definitely seek treatment so you can eventually enjoy the company of your brothers and sisters in Christ after all we’re called the Body of Christ. And since you’ll have had learned so much during your time in prison that will make you capable of winning many souls over to the Lord when you meet/interact with the lost as well.
If you believe in Christ, choose to spend your time learning about the Lord your God and serve Him faithfully. You will then have nothing to worry about. Be like Paul and reach out to the world through your jail cell and look forward to the day you are out of it (whether in this life or the next).
