Digital practice and Art and designe studio practice evaluation.
In semester one when i started my second attempt of graduating university. This time with more enthusiasm and more hopes. It was hard to star at first , i was lacking ideas and had troubles focusing on what i am interested in. I wanted to continue an old project , but i eventually did not. I browsed through the list in the module pack fro the ideas. In Digital Practice we were asked to select one of the 10 points that offered us a starting point, an idea that could potentially develop in to a project. To be honest I do not really remember what was my choice back then. Eventually i came back to the idea of making sculptural objects that glow in the dark. I tried installations and discovered glass to be a potential full material. I started making mirror etchings. I was interested in the technology of etching since year one, but the method i discovered presented something unique to me. Something i personally haven’t encountered before. I researched the topic and could not really find any artists that would be doing mirror etchings. In semester two I decided to merge Digital and Art and Design practices in to one. This allowed me to manage my work. I have decided to share the work between two modules. Taking photos and editing them – part of Digital Practice. Composition, sketching and drawing – part of Art and Design practice. This allowed me to produce a few pieces of work this semester that i find to be quite successful in terms of visual appearance, technique, presentation and material. What i think is a big change this time, is that my thinking radically changed, my work started motivating me to create more. Perhaps because this is probably the first time in my life when I enjoy my work. One of the final pieces i presented this year is a triptych , Untitled. What i find successful about it? As above, the method of making. And the ability to judge work without being blinded. I like how the piece evolved from 1 mirror sized 10 x 10 cm to a massive trio. The process of making took some experimentation with the colour pallet and the mechanism of etching. I learned how to etch the mirrors in order not to damage the glass , so the images would remain more clear when placed in to an etched mirror. I think the most successful aspect of this year was actually making work that i felt a connection with. Why glass? Why etchings? Why folklore? Why so dark? I have always seen glass as a very elegant material to work with, but i never really had a chance to use it in my work. As mentioned before i was fascinated with the simple technique I discovered , so i just kept on making work. Seeing what happens. Etching was the only accessible safe method of working with my mirrors. Also it created a pattern on the glass that helped with merging the image with the glass/mirrored layer behind the glass. I was always interested in folklore, one of the reasons is – I am pagan, and so is my family. Folklore holds a massive amount of historical information, I just find it arousing curiosity, all these stories of mystical creatures and the unknown. The triptych that i have been working on for quite some time started of with an urban legend. i wan not sure what i wanted to achieve in the end so i just started etching this big mirror. How does a 2d image work in a fake 3d space? How does a human perception of a mirror work? What makes people look at reflective surfaces differently? (Unlike at 2d imagery) I think the difference is in expectation. We expect to see ourselves in a reflective surface rather than any other information. Does that make us narcissistic to a certain extent? Or is it just curiosity? These are the questions i think often about. I would like to think that my work has something to offer for the society, or at least will have something to offer to the society by the end of year three. I am also interested in the psychological aspect of the mirrors. I believe the answers to my questions are there.
Another set of mirror i have produced this semester was a set of 8 medium sized mirrors.
they were produced as a series of experiments on a larger scale rather than a project.
Still exploring the same questions, thinking about the idea of looking in to the mirror and subconsciously expecting to see something new, yet a reflection of oneself.
A collection of 14 mirrors – I have been researching fairy tales and picked 2 to be illustrated in a way within the mirrors.
I picked a young model and a older model to create an age contrast between the characters.
in my work i would like to talk about the aesthetics of a black and white image that combines a human body with geometrical imagery as a strong contrast.
lines hinting towards the idea of censorship.
i wanted the piece to combine the beauty of shape in different types of human body (face, hands, shoulders, lips, hair, upper body parts.)
Aiming for it to target different audience .
The models i have picked – one of them is a friend of mine from year one, the second model is an old friend of mine.
I purposely idealised the younger model in photo shop and edited the older model less.
I wanted to keep the age contrast.
I recently realised why i felt connected to this work.
I read an article about mirrors this year, about the damage the media does to the society with the standards of body and appearance. I think it is ugly.
In my work 2 models are spitting black ink.
I was referencing bulimia in my work.
The idea of throwing up black.
Black as a symbol of consumed food to be hated.
I used flowers and apples in my photo shoots to accent the idea of health damage.
And how this body torture gives a feeling of satisfaction.
I had bulimia in the past. In conclusion. To sup up what has my work been about this year : Eyes, ways of looking and perception of a mirror.(Experimenting with glass) Folklore. Apples, the role and meaning they have in culture, folklore and myths and as a symbol. Mirror etching.
Work Space Left to right. A triptych - Both Digital and Studio practice. 3 Mirrors with Glass etchings. The images withing the mirrors: lines - etched out and painted with acrylic paint. Eyes - photos taken by me and edited. Placed in a mirror. 8 Pieces - Both Digital and Studio practice. 8 medium sized etched mirrors with Photos printed on the photo paper - placed in a mirror. All photos taken by me and edited. 6 are on the wall. 2 more to be found on the table. 14 small round mirrors. - Both Digital and Studio practice. Mirrors have been etched. Photos have been placed in to the mirrors. images have been printed on paper. An empty etched mirror is to be found on the table as an example The lense that has been used to take photos through as an experiment is also on the table. The book on the wall - Visual research. Untitled book. the visual research blog contains instructions. Link: http://visualresearchlog2016.tumblr.com/post/144046785458/about-this-book-this-book-is-on-the-wall-this The mirror mosaic next to the book - Both Digital and Studio Practice. Layered glass and broken mirror in a wooden frame. 28 pieces - Art and Context. A collection of etched mirrors with photos on black painted wood. A white sphere - Both Digital and Studio practice. A found lamp shade with glass paint. (Unfortunately an unfinished piece. sketches to be found in a sketch book.)
Photos from our exhibition. Photos taken by Karen Barlow. The show went quite well. The space was filled and the work was finished on time. I was worried about not being able to finish everything on time. I think the exhibition was successful because we managed to share the space without arguments. Different media work was presented.
A piece from semester 1. The starting point of my work. Inspired by a short urban horror story. Link to the story - http://www.creepypasta.com/in-the-mirror/ Modern folklore is a big inspiration for my work.
Photo taken by Sarah Hoey When first putting the mirror mosaic together I had it taped to just hold it together. later i gave it a frame. I wanted to create a distorted reflective surface by layering glass . The idea was to have different light on each layer of glass. The further layers would be darker and appear smaller. I like the idea of this piece to change the oneself reflection in it. causing problems focusing on a reflection.
1st photo taken by me. 2nd photo taken by Karen barlow.
Inspired by the urban legend. I continued making mirrors with eyes. i wanted to add somethign to the image to take away the horror film poster look. it reminded me too much of -
14 pieces of mirror. Etched with a photo in it.
I wanted to create a piece that would combine aesthetically pleasing and at the same time disturbing imagery. I wanted to use mirrors in order to encourage the viewer to look in to it. However the mirror this time is not a center of attention. I have left a lot less unhatched space this time, purposely to make this peace slightly different. In this case the mirror works more as a frame. I wanted to combine women and beautiful objects such as flowers and Fruit. I picked a petite model and a more fuller figured model. I wanted to create a contrast between bodies. I kept the size small in order to keep the intimacy with in the work. Similar to the work form semester 1 ( 10 x 10 cm mirrors.)
Edited eyes that i have picked for the triptych. .
I played around with the color balance in photo shop. The variations of colors made me think of chakras, how the are positioned and what is their purpose.
Apple of my eye The apple of my eye' is exceedingly old and first appears in Old English in a work attributed to King Aelfred (the Great) of Wessex, AD 885, titled Gregory's Pastoral Care.Much later, Shakespeare used the phrase in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, 1600:Flower of this purple dye, Hit with Cupid’s archery, Sink in apple of his eyeIt also appears several times in the Bible; for example, in Deuteronomy 32:10 (King James Version, 1611)He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.and in Zechariah 2:8:For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye.The phrase was known from those early sources but became more widely used in the general population when Sir Walter Scott included it in the popular novel Old Mortality, 1816:"Poor Richard was to me as an eldest son, the apple of my eye."
Found image - Source unknown. Also this image well represents the meaning of the word eyeball in Russian. глазное яблоко - eye ball глазное - eye (Of an eye) яблоко - apple => eye apple
I like the 5th photo. I like the color combination and the texture. I like the retro look of it. It makes me think of psychedelic images . I do not like the 6th photo right next to it, I find it too simple and it needs something else.
The selected images. I continued thinking about the Art in Context project. Apples played a big role in that project and i feel like they are slowly sneaking in to Studio practice. In semester one I have painted apples. I talked about the apple references in cultures and religion in Art and Context blog.
An interesting theory. Research.
What role does photo editing have in our modern society? Where does history stand ?
