Feedback and evaluation of studio portrait.
Feedback from the class was that I had met the brief. They said it was lit well and that I had made good use of flags and reflectors. It had a mid tone background and was not overexposed. It also had a good representation of a character which made you wonder what sort of person the model was.
It was felt that the hooded top created a strong effective shadow and it also added to the sense of who the character was and whether she was hiding something.
The lighting created quite a harsh shadow from the nose, although it was felt that there were still a lot of details in the shadows as well as in the highlights. Overall it was said that the shadows worked well.
In terms of the character it was felt that she was a strong confident person who is powerful and serious. The angle used makes the character look taller and more important and she was someone that you wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of, as she is someone with authority that could look after herself. It was also mentioned that she looked shifty and that she was trying not to draw attention to herself due to the hood being up. The stance of the model made it look like she was caught in a situation as if she wasn’t sure what to do or that something is going to happen.
The cropping was also mentioned as it was felt that having the model in the centre of the frame would have added to the sense of confidence.
Evaluation – I was trying to create a portrait that conveyed a strong, confident character that you could trust and have faith in. I wanted to show a character that could take care of not only herself, but also other people, so I’m glad that that worked well. This was developed from the stances used in my research picture of the Doctor and his assistant but I wanted to get a more authoritative pose, which I think I succeeded in achieving.
The relatively strong shadows should make more sense once this is merged with my background shot, however I still think it stands up on its own as a portrait. This is confirmed due to the comments above regarding who the character is.
When I was deciding on my crop, I wanted to add an “edgy” feeling to the character so that’s why I left space on the left, although in hindsight I should have placed her in the centre to add to the confidence of the character as mentioned in the feedback.
Overall I am happy with my studio portrait, as the character turned out the way I wanted. Although I was initially annoyed at myself when I messed up the focus on my first shoot, I was glad that I had to shoot it again, because the more time I spend in the studio the more confident I am becoming in using the lights/equipment. Really enjoyed this assignment and am looking forward to putting the techniques (and lessons) learned to good use when we start shooting portraits using film.
