Joan Crawford applies her makeup in her dressing room trailer during production of the 20th Century Fox/Robert Aldrich psychological thriller Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 1964. Crawford’s long-standing tension with co-star Bette Davis flared up after shooting only a few scenes, prompting Joan to feign illness and enter the hospital. Pointedly lingering there for weeks, she was eventually replaced by Olivia de Havilland and permitted to exit the production. Of the movie, Crawford later said: “I looked forward to working with Bette again. I had no idea of the extent of her hate, and that she planned to destroy me.” de Havilland also had negative feelings towards the film, later rather cattily stating: “It wasn’t really what I wanted to do. Bette wanted it so much, so I did it. I can’t say I regretted it, because working with her was special, but I can’t say it was a picture I am proud to put on my resume. Given the choice, I wouldn’t have deprived Joan Crawford of the honor.”
