On October 22, 1781 John Laurens wrote to Richard Kidder Meade:

How could I be so unfortunate, as to pass in your neighborhood, without knowing it?_  However anxious I was at that time to join the army, I should undoubtedly have made an effort to embrace my friend, after so long an absence, and to have made an acquaintance with the incomparable female that is become a part of yourself. I sincerely partake your mutual happiness, and I entreat you will speak of me in such terms to Mrs. Meade as will secure me an admission to her friendship_ you know my heart_ I am filled with admiration of her character from what I have heard among those who have the happiness of enjoying her society, and my unbounded and inviolable attachment to you will I am confident give me a title with her._

There isn’t really anything particularly noteworthy about this but it stuck with me because in none of his surviving letters to Hamilton does he write anything like this about Eliza. In fact he never refers to Eliza directly in any of his surviving correspondence. Not even in a postscript where it was customary to send regards, for example in his 11 April 1781 letter to Washington he writes “I must trouble Your Excellency to present my Respects to Mrs Washington”.

The closest Laurens comes to mentioning Eliza in his surviving correspondence is in his July 1782 letter where he writes “Your private affairs cannot require such immediate and close attention; you speak like a pater familias surrounded with a large family” before crossing out “large family” and writing “numerous progeny”. By replacing “large family” with “numerous progeny” he is focusing his point more on Hamilton’s child and less on Eliza however Hamilton’s “private affairs” clearly involved Eliza.

The only other clue we get to Laurens’ feelings about Eliza is Hamilton’s 16 September 1780 letter to Laurens. Hamilton seems to be responding to Laurens’ missing 8 September letter when he writes:

In spite of Schuylers black eyes, I have still a part for the public and another for you; so your impatience to have me married is misplaced; a strange cure by the way, as if after matrimony I was to be less devoted than I am now.

The implication here is that Laurens thought Hamilton’s marriage would ‘cure’ him of his devotion to Laurens. Hamilton is reassuring Laurens that his feelings for Laurens haven’t changed. It seems that Laurens may have felt that his relationship with Hamilton was threatened by Eliza.

I’ve seen it suggested that Laurens’ issue with Hamilton’s marriage was to do with him believing that Hamilton should devote himself wholly to the army and not to a wife and while I see where this is coming from it’s hard not to notice that he doesn’t seem to have an issue with Meade’s marriage.
