DIY Mascara and Lash Growth Syrum
This week I have spent time researching and making chemical free dishwasher detergents, floor cleaners, laundry balls, soap scum removers etc. and at one point thought about me. Looking after the health of my family is #1 on my priority list but what about me? What are some things that make me feel good about me? Makeup!!!!!
Even at my worst of times when I was undergoing chemotherapy for Hodgkins Lymphoma or undergoing a stem cell transplant I still got up every single day hair or no hair and put on my makeup because that was part of what made my quality of life. So I guess that brings us to where we are at right now….I still like to feel good about myself but would like to do so as naturally as possible.
One of my favourite products is mascara. I can pretty much go without any other piece of makeup but it is few and far between that you will ever see me without mascara! The problem is since my treatments my eyelashes have grown in very sparse….hence the reason for adding the eyelash serum to this post as well.
DIY Mascara
You will need a clean mascara tube ( you can reuse an old mascara bottle by cleaning it with DIY makeup remover or by cleaning it out with soap and water)
Then you will need 1tbsp coconut oil
1 1/2 tsp bees wax
4tsp aloe Vera gel
2 capsules charcoal (you can buy these in most pharmacies)
Place all your ingredients in a pot (emptying the charcoal tablets into the mixture) and heat on low. Once the mixture is mixed up and not gritty (1-2 minutes usually) then the easiest way I have found to get this into the tube is by sucking the liquid up with a meat flavour injector and squirting it in the bottle. You can also use medicine droppers or needless syringes, toothpicks….whatever you find works for you. Seems like a bunch of work…yes, but it’s just one more thing that adds to a healthier me. Don’t get me wrong I love shopping for cosmetics at MAC or Sephora but how many people can say ” oh you buy splash proof from MAC? I make my own mascara!”
On to the next part……..
DIY Lash Serum
The fun stuff about the lash serum is this is stuff that most people have in their cupboards.
First off you will need either a clean mascara bottle or a makeup mixing pot
Vitamin E oil
Aloe Vera Gel
Castor Oil (you can use coconut oil if you prefer)
Next what you are going to do is place 1 part oil (coconut or castor) with 1 part aloe to 2 parts vitamin E oil in a bowl and stir. Voila you have your lash serum. Please note that it may take 2-3 months before you notice a difference but this is less expensive than Latisse which is around $120 per bottle and it doesn’t cause your iris to change colour. This serum may be easier to keep in a mixing pot and apply to your clean lashes with a mascara wand….whatever works for you there are no rules here ha ha.
Just remember……just like all make up products natural or not you should not be keeping them longer than 3-6 months. Enjoy!
