안녕하세요 여러분! Last time we talked about how to say ‘and’ and ‘therefore’, this time we will discuss another way to say ‘and’ as well as ‘with’.

You can use 하고 and (이)랑 to express the word ‘and’.

하고

하고 is used like a particle and attached after a noun with a space.

Example

- 그녀 = Her

- 그녀하고 그녀 = Her and her

(이)랑

If a noun ends in a vowel, you use 랑.

If a noun ends in a consanant, you use 이랑.

Examples

우유 = Milk

주스 = Juice

우유랑 주스 = Milk and juice

빵 = Bread

물 = Water

빵이랑 물 = Bread and water

-

(이)랑 and 하고 are interchangeable. However, (이)랑 is more casual so you’d probably use 하고 in formal situations.

With

(이)랑 and 하고 usually mean ‘and’. However, they can also hold the meaning of ‘with’ depending on the context.

Examples

친구하고 영화 봤어요. = I saw a movie with a friend.

친구이랑 영화 봤어요. = I saw a movie with a friend.

It is very unlikely that someone would say, “I watched a friend and a movie,” so it’s safe to assume (이)랑 and 하고 mean ‘with’ in situations like this.

If you want to make yourself crystal clear, you can add ‘같이’ after (이)랑 or 하고 to say “together with”.

Sample Sentences

“지갑에 학생증이랑 신용카드가 들어 있거든.”

My student I.D. and credit cards are in my wallet.

“더 이상 그 사람하고 같이 일 못 하겠어!”

I can’t stand working with him anymore!

“전화번호랑 성함을 말씀해 주시겠어요?”

Can I have your name and phone number, please?

5 Most Basic Verbs + How to Use Them [pt.1]

Hello everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve made a grammar post (or really any useful post lol). I’m finally done with exams and have some free time!!

I do have some bad news though: due to my financial situation, I won’t be able to go to Korea this summer :( For those who really wanted to see Korean culture first hand, we will have to wait! But no worries! I can save up money and hopefully next year we can all go together and I will document it!

That being said! I see a lot of these posts “top 10 / 100 useful verbs” but it’s just a vocabulary list and doesn’t show you how to use those verbs (and some of them are irregular so they’re difficult to conjugate). So hopefully, I can teach you how to use these verbs in all kinds of situations :)

This list will go over: (5/100)      1. 오다 - to come      2. 가다 - to go      3. 먹다 - to eat      4. 보다 - to see      5. 하다 - to do 

오다 - to come

Present Tense:      casual - 와      low formal - 와요      high formal - 옵니다 Past Tense:      casual - 왔어      low formal - 왔어요      high formal - 왔습니다 Future Tense: (declarative // conditional)      casual - 올 거야 // 오겠어      low formal - 올 거예요 // 오겠어요      high formal - 올 겁니다 // 오겠습니다

Example Sentences:   1. casual: 이리 / 여기 와 - come here   2. low formal: 저는 캐나다에서 왔어요 - I came from Canada   3. high formal: 저는 파티에 올 겁니다 // 오겠습니다 - I’ll come to the party

가다 - to go

Present Tense:

     casual - 가      low formal - 가요       high formal - 갑니다 Past Tense:      casual - 갔어      low formal - 갔어요      high formal - 갔습니다 Future Tense:      casual - 갈 거야 // 가겠어      low formal - 갈 거예요 // 가겠어요      high formal - 갈 겁니다 // 가겠습니다

Example Sentences:

  1. casual: 지금 가 - I’m going now   2. low formal: 한국에 갔어요 - I went to Korea   3. high formal: 집에 갈 겁니다 // 가겠습니다 - I’m going to go home

먹다 - to eat

Present Tense:      casual - 먹어      low formal - 먹어요      high formal - 먹습니다 Past Tense:      casual - 먹었어      low formal - 먹었어요      high formal - 먹었습니다 Future Tense:      casual - 먹을 거야 // 먹겠어      low formal - 먹을 거예요 // 먹겠어요      high formal - 먹을 겁니다 // 먹겠습니다

Example Sentences:   1. casual: 뭐든지 잘 먹어 - (I’m) not a picky eater

  2. low formal: 밥 먹었어요? - did you eat?   3. high formal: 잘 먹겠습니다 - I will eat well (say this before meals)

보다 - to see

Present Tense:      casual - 봐      low formal - 봐요       high formal - 봅니다 Past Tense:      casual - 봤어      low formal - 봤어요      high formal - 봤습니다 Future Tense:      casual - 볼 거야 // 보겠어      low formal - 볼 거예요 // 보겠어요      high formal - 볼 겁니다 // 보겠습니다 Example Sentences:

  1. casual: 다음에 봐 - see you next time    2. low formal: 저는 하교에서 오빠를 봤어요 - I saw my (older) brother at school   3. high formal: 아벤저스 볼 겁니다 // 겠습니다 - I’m going to see Avengers

하다 - to do 

Present Tense:      casual - 해      low formal - 해요       high formal - 합니다 Past Tense:      casual - 했어      low formal - 했어요      high formal - 했습니다 Future Tense:      casual - 할 거야 // 하겠어      low formal - 할 거예요 // 하겠어요      high formal - 할 겁니다 // 하겠습니다 Example Sentences: 

  1. casual: 우와 ~ 언니는 한국말 잘 해! - wow! (older) sister speaks Korean well!   2. low formal: 수업 후에 숙제를 했어요 - after class, I did my homework   3. high formal: 잘 할 겁니다! // 잘 하겠습니다! - you’ll do well!

앞 — in front of     뒤 — behind

안 — inside           밖 — outside

grammar formula: noun + position + 에 있어요.
