We call this style the Eco Chalet. It is an architectural style that transplants the dramatic, steep geometry of alpine cabins directly to the tropical environment. This design approach addresses the intense tropical climate through a unique form. The signature feature is an exceptionally steep, asymmetrical A-frame roof. While this steep angle was originally engineered to shed heavy winter snow, here it acts as a massive protective umbrella. It effortlessly sheds torrential rain and creates deep overhangs that shield the home from intense sunlight. The true beauty of the Eco Chalet lies in how it organizes physical space. By extending the roof canopy far beyond the enclosed living walls, the design creates essential transitional zones on both levels. On the ground floor, the deep roof overhangs turn a simple concrete patio into a fully usable, shaded extension of the indoor living area. This space serves as a flexible zone for relaxation, social interaction, and quiet contemplation. The upper level features a recessed sky terrace that acts as a private outdoor living room. Nestled within the roof's steep slope, this terrace doubles as an active landscape zone. Cascading tropical plants spill over the edge to provide natural privacy, create evaporative cooling, and soften the crisp steel structure. Inside, the home functions as a light-filled minimalist capsule. A full-height glass wall and an open mezzanine floor plan keep the double-height interior connected to the outdoors. The design utilizes crisp white corrugated steel and exposed structural framing to establish a refined industrial aesthetic, which is balanced by the surrounding lush vegetation. The Eco Chalet proves that industrial materials can work in harmony with nature. It is an architecture that uses its environment to create comfortable, dynamic, and livable spaces.

A look back at my 1989 figure series. An exploration of form through inverted light. Working with white pencil on black paper required a complete reversal of instinct. Instead of drawing shadows, I used white lead to pull the illuminated surfaces out of the dark, leaving the untouched black of the paper to hold the weight of the shadows.

Architects like to think they're shielded from market forces and that we work in the purity of lines and light. But the truth is, the drawing board is already a market. Every stroke is a pitch. Every choice competes for survival under gravity, finance, and taste laws. Early in my career, I spent weeks developing a cultural center concept. It had perfect proportions, a clean circulation logic, and a poetic roof that echoed the local hills. Then came the review: the developer glanced at the drawings for thirty seconds and asked, “What will it sell?” I hated the question. Years later, I realized it was the right one. Designs live or die in the tension between meaning and market. To ignore that is to treat architecture as fiction. To embrace it is to wield it as leverage. When we design with awareness of the venture and how people will use, buy, lease, and sustain a place, we expand our influence beyond form. We stop being service providers and become value-makers. Every creative decision, then, is an investment act. The site is the balance sheet; the context is the market trend. The lines we draw must be appreciated over time in terms of rent and relevance. Once you see that, design feels less like art trapped in contracts and more like intelligence playing out in the open world. That's when architecture matures from shelter to strategy.

Every infill lot makes a decision before the architect arrives, and it's usually the one that determines whether the project ever gets built well. The lot is too small to waste any space, which means the ground floor cannot simply disappear into a lobby and driveway the way it does on a larger, gated site. A street with real foot traffic is being handed to a building that either uses it or ignores it, and ignoring it is the more common mistake. The harder discipline sits one level up. On a generous parcel, an inefficient core barely shows up in the numbers. On a footprint measured in a few hundred square meters, every meter given to elevators, stairs, and shafts is a meter that will never become a saleable unit. A well-placed core can carry more units per floor without forcing an awkward layout around it. A poorly placed one quietly erodes the project's economics from the first schematic sketch onward. This is also where the buyer has changed. The person purchasing in a compact vertical development today is rarely trading down from a larger home. More often, they are trading up from a location that could no longer meet the design standards they wanted at a price that still made sense, choosing proximity to a growing office corridor or a school cluster over a legacy address. They are not looking for six amenities they will never use. They are looking for a building that got its fundamentals right. Massing, ground floor use, core efficiency. These decisions rarely photograph well, which is exactly why they are the ones that separate a considered building from a compressed one.

I keep imagining a building that never agreed to the laws of nature. I have started calling it the Gravity-Ambiguous Housing Project. In my head, it starts as an enormous ring, and you live inside it. I picture standing on my terrace and looking up to see another family's garden hanging directly over me, except to them nothing hangs at all. Their morning is flat, calm, and correct. So is mine. I imagine kids growing up thinking down is just wherever you happen to be standing. The more I sit with it, the more I love the ordinary details. I picture laundry drying at an angle that should be impossible. Plants leaning toward a sun that sits in the middle of everything instead of above it. Someone crossing a bridge through the open core and feeling their sense of up quietly rotate, the way a swimmer forgets which way the surface is until they stop and look. I imagined a different kind of gravity because I got tired of every city being a taller argument over who deserves the top spot. Take away a single up and the whole fight dissolves. There is no penthouse when every surface is somebody's ground. I think what I am really chasing is that first moment a person steps inside and feels a rule they trusted their whole life go soft. If you could design one law of the world to bend, just for the people living inside your building, which one would you reach for first?

What if architecture could become a symbol of optimism? Over the past few weeks, I've been exploring the concept of SINAG. A visionary civic landmark imagined for Clark or Batangas. Sinag means "ray of light." That idea became the foundation of the entire design. Rather than designing another iconic object, I wanted to explore architecture as a place where light, people, culture, and innovation intersect. The sculptural form is shaped by flowing geometries that capture daylight, frame public spaces, and create an experience that changes throughout the day. The vision is a destination that could house exhibitions, performances, innovation labs, public gathering spaces, and rooftop experiences. An architecture that belongs as much to the city as it does to its visitors. This presentation explores how architecture can express a contemporary, open, and optimistic national identity.
