According to contemporary mores, Anne should have shut her eyes to Henry’s pursuit of Jane Seymour. Queens were expected not to notice husbandly diversions. George Wyatt commented that ‘wise men in those days judged’ that if, like Katherine, Anne had been more tolerant of peccadilloes she would have risked less; however, 'her too great love’ prevented what 'she might the rather have done respecting the general liberty and custom then that way’. Wyatt’s prose is heavy-footed, but it does point to an easily overlooked but drastic weakness in Anne’s position. Royal marriages, both before, during and after the sixteenth century, were expected to be business affairs, related to international diplomacy and the continuation of a dynasty. Spouses were suggested to, not chosen by, a monarch. Romance featured only accidentally; its expected place was the affaire. Henry VIII, almost uniquely, defied this expectation and custom and both chose and married Anne for Romantic reasons. … In marrying for love, Henry in effect confused the role of wife and mistress, with the result that personal emotion was the basis of his relationship with Anne and hers with him. Anne was therefore right to say that her feelings were more exposed than those of Katherine. The corollary was that, as well as being hurt by royal philandering, Anne was compelled to fight to protect this personal relationship with Henry. She could not distance herself as Katherine of Aragon had. She could not ignore it if her husband had become infatuated with Jane, even though the inevitable result was to make Jane more significant than she need have been. Though tolerating infidelity would have been the safer course, Anne was forced to put herself on a level with Jane and challenge Henry to choose between them.

A small painting hanging in a dark stairwell of an old North Norfolk house will be featured in a unique exhibition in Blickling Hall in Norfolk later this year. The enigmatic portrait of a teenage girl conveys a mysterious air as she stares from the shadowy setting.

One of the most intriguing aspects is the artist’s addition of the name ANNE BULLEN along with the age of the sitter, 14 years. Painted in oil on what appears to be an oak panel, the work has sparked an idea which has led to the creation of an exhibition and hunt for a treasure to be staged at Anne’s birth place, Blickling Hall in Norfolk, during September and October 2015.

Eric Ives OBE (1931 – 2012) the British historian and expert on the Tudor period considered that Anne was released from the care of Margaret of Austria (governor of the Low Countries) in 1514. This release, at the request of her father Sir Thomas, was to allow Anne to return to England in order to accompany Mary Tudor on her journey to France later that year.

It seems quite plausible that Anne could have travelled from a port in the Low Countries to Bishop’s Lynn (now King’s Lynn). It also seems plausible that Sir Thomas could have allowed George Boleyn to travel to Norfolk with a couple of trusted squires. Firstly to escort Anne safely back to Heaver but also to allow the squires to check that the appointed Reeve in Blickling was indeed acting in Sir Thomas’s best interests…

And so could the little portrait ‘Anne Bullen’ be a record of the return of Blickling’s most famous daughter?

An added twist, what happened to that jewelled pendant around her neck?

This portrait is charming, but it has several inconsistencies that rule it out as a portrait of Anne at age fourteen.

If you believe the 1501 birthdate, that would date the painting to 1515. If you believe the 1507 birthdate (as I do) that would put it at around 1521. For both dates, the headdress is completely wrong.

French hoods in 1515-1521 were longer at the sides, with the billament reaching below the jawline, and the veil was positioned more toward the crown of the head, as in the image below of Princess Mary in the mid 1520s.

The hood the sitter is wearing, with the forward billament curling up toward the cheekbone, dates more to the 1540s, like this image below of Katheryn Howard.

Secondly, the jewels on the billaments are far too rich for Anne Boleyn at this date. Thomas Boleyn was on his way up in the world and was a successful ambassador, but the jewels on this headdress are more suited to a queen than the daughter of a knight.

I would love to see some dating done to the oak panel, and to have it scanned to see if there’s been any over-painting. From the facial features, it could be intended to a portrait of Anne Boleyn (or was altered to resemble her and inscribed with her name at a later date), but I’m guessing it was done during her daughter’s reign.

The Prince Couple is expecting a child. “We are so happy and excited to announce that we are expecting our first child. We are very much looking forward to it,” says Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia. The birth is expected to take place in April of 2016. No changes in the schedule of The Prince Couple’s public engagements are planned during the fall of 2015.
