I LOVE wood sorrel. Its honestly one of my favorite plants, which is impressive because i like a lot of plants. But wood sorrel man. It comes in like a bunch of colors and its super pretty. The leaves are shaped like little hearts!!!! And the best part, Itās edible!!!! It tastes kinda lemony and sour and really tasty. And it grows EVERYWHERE its awesome. Try looking for some in your area, itās probably on a sidewalk somewhere (if you are in North America, Europe or Asia). The variety that grows where i live is either creeping wood sorrel or yellow wood sorrel, theyāre really difficult to tell apart but are for all intents and purposes the same thing. Some of the plants around my house have turned purple, its the same plant as the green they just do that in the sun, isnāt that great? And it has these little yellow flowers that are very pretty! And! Edible! All parts of the plant are. Unfortunately, i donāt have any pictures of the flowers because they are light sensitive and i rarely ever catch them when theyāre open :/ Also, they have seed pods and THEY LAUCH SEEDS INTO THE AIR WHEN FULLY DEVELOPED AHHHH. The seed pods are also just delicious and awesome. It is also high in oxalic acid, which a lot of sources online will tell you can be bad if you have like kidney stones i think? But no normal person is going to be eating enough wood sorrel at one time for it to really be a concern. I am, of course, the exception to this. Did you know oxalic acid actually gets its name from wood sorrel, genus Oxalis? Of course you didnāt! No one does except plant nerds! You know what else is high in oxalic acid? Spinach!
Anyways, Iāve been getting into foraging and wood sorrel has a special place in my heart as the first edible plant i learned about! I am still very much a beginner at foraging, but i would absolutely recommend. However, if you are going to eat plants you find growing in a forest somewhere, be one hundred percent sure you know what they are before eating and do your research! Also, be responsible and donāt take an irreplaceable amount of plants from your local ecosystem. Those are just the basics of foraging but theyāre super important!
